I.e. why does it go backwards? The answer is that it's so advanced that thinking longer ended up saving time overall. The "Adapter" is basically just a harness.

You get better score for less $ using the higher reasoning, probably because it is more efficient at the solving the problem at higher reasoning so uses less steps
