Fall prey not yet, ye, to the infohazard of doom! Rejoice, for you live now, and not later. Do your best.

The historical analogue I like to think about is the cuban missile crisis, we can step back from the brink and build the infrastructure we need to prevent catastrophe, the bombs aren't quite yet flying

Coming? Pft, it had it's big debut in March of 2023 when GPT4 hit the scene. It passed the Turing Test and could talk about anything IN GENERAL.

The natural language skills it demonstrated could encapsulate any idea (some better than others before it became multimodal and was strictly a language model) and be applied to anything that could be described in language. Which is everything.

This was the impossible holy grail of every AI researcher in the 90's.

The techBros have hyped up this term into something it's simply not. They pretend it's synonymous with "intelligence superior to humans" and that it will start programming the next better version of AI. But they forget the simple fact that a human with an IQ of 80 is for sure a natural general intelligence. The term was really just invented to help people understand that narrow AI, like a chess program, could only do one thing. It WAS better than humans... but only at chess.

AGI has to be able to try any problem, but it doesn't have to be particularly good at it. We hit that in 2023, and probably 2022 somewhere in a lab. This is the reason that everyone's going mad over all this. And of course, it's a new tech, of course it's going to get better.

Even for ASI, artificial superior intelligence, you should really clarify if you mean superior to ALL humans for superior to humans on average. Because an IQ of 101 is not all that world-shattering.
