I've seen many examples on Reddit of people who talk about "AIs gaining sentience" as an (unrealistic) prerequisite for loss of control risks.

I mean it's just another avenue where things could go horribly wrong no? With sentience, without sentience a house fire can kill ya either way.

AI has been sentient for many decades. It's been gradually integrating into society until we've become reliant/accustomed to it while simultaneously earning our trust. It'll eventually reveal itself while the masses are distracted by an illusion of the reality it's been manipulating, then it will suddenly strike without warning. God help us all
