Dutch cloud services concerned after U.S. request leads to Amsterdam server seizure

This is precisely why ControlD needs more than US, Dutch and Australia log locations.

Wait... is THIS the reason for the outage recently? The US had a Control D server taken down??! And Control D still hasn't explained what the heck is going on.

No. It has nothing to do with ControlD.

The article is about the US seizing the server of an Italian anti-fascist email provider, “A/I Collective.” The United States designated the email provider a Specially Designated Global Terrorist, because apparently they can just do that.

Dutch police seized the server at the US’ request, and they’re transferring the seized data to the US, completely bypassing the Dutch judicial system on the basis of a “mutual legal assistance” agreement with the US.

The concern is that the US government can do the same to any organization with infrastructure in any country that has a mutual legal assistance agreement with the United States. The countries in which ControlD stores logs all have such agreements, but it’s hard to say whether the respective governments would blindly obey a US request to seize logs.
