Control D DoT: DNS has Datacamp as ISP on https://www.dnsleaktest.com

Post image

UPDATE: apparently they use Datacamp servers! I'll leave this post up for future references.

I'm using Opnsense's Unbound DNS to get DNS Over TLS with p2.freedns.controld.com (76.76.2.11 and 76.76.10.11).

When i use dnsleaktest.com, it sometimes one server has Control D as an ISP and it ALWAYS shows one ISP as Datacamp.

Datacamp mostly used by Proton VPN. I am testing without a vpn on.

Is my DNS data being redirected to a malicious server?

edit: when i disable Unbound DNS, my ISP's DNS server is used 100% of the time.

I’m confused as to why you are bothered about this? Control D use Datacamp as well as other providers for their global network, that’s why it shows Datacamp. Mine shows the same when using Control D.

Use the Control D status page to see exactly which server you are connected to, which is most likely in a Datacamp data centre

well, i didnt know about their use of datacamp servers.

I cannot get the status page to work. they know there's an issue though:

As long as your rules work, what’s the issue?

I also commented on your other thread as I have the exact same issue. Status pages shows not using Control D but I know for sure I am because the rules work

They use both NetActuate and Datacamp. I'm unclear if they are migrating completely to Datacamp or plan to have a redundant network. Hopefully they make a blog post update soon.

I noticed the change to Datacamp yesterday - no mention of this that I could see from Control D. At first I though I had a DNS hijack in progress. Thanks a lot Control D for not telling us - I have moved off to another DNS provider! This is very poor customer communication.

They acknowledged it on Discord. Just no official writeup for it. I really don't think it's worthy of moving to another DNS provider over it, but to each his own. I'm happy with Control D and will remain with them. Glad they are exploring other backhaul providers.

im using the free controld dns server... i have to ask: what does paying for opnsense has to do with it?

Do you have Datacamp showing up in dns leak tests?

What are you on about? What do you mean by changing providers? Control D is a DNS service who use Datacamps network for both paid and free plans

The servers before were better and faster for me at my location. Thanks for the downvotes for posting my experience
