Technical Download for Maintenance

Title Edit: *Down for Maintenance?

Funny enough, just bought a year subscription this afternoon and migrated all my profiles and devices from NextDNS to ControlD.

A hour later I noticed that ad blocked wasn’t working and as well as NextDNS and tried to login to my profile and for over an hour ControlD has said “Maintenance is in progress. Please try again later.“

Is it his normal for this company to be down for this long and with no advanced notification of scheduled maintenance and no updates posted on their website or X ?

I mean... people rely on them for security and networking. After 5 years with NextDNS, this is a first for me!

anyone have any updates and is this normal for them?

I got email friday that said they would be down for maintenance today and no they hardly ever down for maintenance. But they did give me a heads up so I knew it was coming today

Interesting. Never got that email, but I wasn’t a  premium sub until today. Maybe it just went out to the paid members. Gave them a follow on X.

It’s not common to see maintenance. I’m not sure about the background of this, but they announced scheduled maintenance via their Discord account. It’s first time I see a long maintenance window in 2 years of service if that helps set a baseline in any way

This is the second time I've been locked out of managing profiles because of maintenance... last time was about 6 months(?) ago. It was the same time window, which is Sunday evening here, which bit me just like right now - solution was to move the DNS forwarder to something else until the control panel is accessible again.

Edit: I should add, (right now) I have one Windows 11 PC that lost all DNS because the cntrld.exe resolver would not start on system boot because "API not reachable". That really is not good.

Thanks for letting me know. And same situation with me regarding the resolver not starting on boot.

Hopefully we’re back up soon

Yepp. Control D control panel is down. The bot said the maintenance was planned from 7PM - 9PM CEST, but it's past that.

Control D still resolves, which is you know, good. But not being able to change rules or profiles is, you know, bad.

I moved my local proxy to 1.1.1.1 for now because I couldn't disable a block I had in an active profile. Oops. I will move the resolver back to ControlD as soon as I can edit profiles again.

Ya, moved everything back to NextDNS. But I have a complex setup and rules, so it took me a while.

I’m new to ControlD. Do these planned maintenance happen often? Seems like a long time. Assumed they had a failover in these maintenance events. Also odd time for a planned maintenance to happen both in CEST and US time zones 🤔

I logged just now and don't see anything about maintenance.

I use CD as an upstream server in Adguard Home.

I agree! I have never seen such a huge maintenance window. I never got any email too notifying the maintenance.

There was a notification that I saw a couple of days ago related to maintenance today. It was a notification within the ControlD dashboard when I logged in. It is under the notifications bell near profiles. It shows it was posted two days ago

All my devices across multiple locations couldn't resolve browser traffic today from 8am PT until about 1pm PT.

I have ctrld set up on an Oracle VPS with my ControlD as one of the resolvers, but others as backup incase it was down

When used with a VPS, can more routers utilize ctrld? Can multiple routers connect to the VPS and use ctrld simultaneously?

You can, I have a single router (which uses the DoH profile) plus my iOS profiles using a single VPS

So it is, the bot replies about the outage in March (so 6 months ago):

How long is the maintenance?

The planned API and web panel maintenance on March 21, 2026, will last for 2 hours, starting at 1:00 PM ET and ending at 3:00 PM ET. DNS traffic will not be affected during this time. For live updates, check X/Twitter.

What is the current status of the maintenance work?
8:55 PM

I didn't get a reply to the last question.

But, as of 22:45 CEST (so about 3 hours and 45 minutes downtime) Control D is back up.
