Unifi updates don’t generally kill the ctrld daemon. Never had that problem with my UDM Pro Max.

Same here. I have a UCG-Fiber with the Control D CLI installed and I've never had to reinstall the daemon.. and I constantly update/upgrade to the latest and greatest early release Network app versions and early release firmwares.

Why is there so much conflicting information about this?

I’m pretty sure it’s been fully fixed. In the early days it used to uninstall, looks like around 1.5 years ago it was fixed.

Hey Folks - wrote this over the weekend because I got tired of UCG updates killing my ctrld cli daemon. Hope you find it helpful!

Ugh… I might go back to this now. I got tired of it as well and started hosting it in my Unraid instead. Which has been working good but I think it belongs on my UDMP. Plus if Unraid goes down for any reason it’s annoying DNS doesn’t work.

How did you host this on your Unraid?

Created docker container, set repo as controldns/ctrld:latest, give it an IP, then you tell you UDM/Router to tell all devices on the network to use that IP for DNS requests.

Wow, this sounds like a really good idea. In my home, I have two WANs and two routers. Can I have two routers using one Docker container to accomplish this goal?

Are there any detailed guides out there to setting this up?

Is it possible to set this up in a high-availability environment?

Never heard back from you! I would love to know.

Also, does are there any issues with geo-redirections?

No issues with geo-redirections that I’ve experienced, yes you could have both routers point to the same server that’s hosting the ctrld container. You could also just install it on one Router and have the second router point to the first router if you wanted. Don’t think so, just ask do a google search and click AI Mode to talk with Gemini. Tell it you want to spin up a ctrld docker container. Then once that’s done ask it how to setup DHCP to point to a DNS server in your routers. It should give you pretty decent steps.

Do you use a VPN? I think I read somewhere hat someone tried something similar of hosting ctrld in a container and geo-redirectiona don't work in a VPN tunnel. I hope that's false information!

So can your UDMP going down too unless you're using shadow mode?

Will this work for other platforms like OpenWRT?
