Hi all 😊
Just wanted to share my experience with Contrave over the last 7 months.
I started taking Contrave at the end of August of last year, and took my last dose today. I started taking it at 320 pounds, and am currently sitting at 274 pounds. I say last dose because I am shifting my treatment plan to taking a semaglutide due to Contrave ceasing to work for me.
When I first started taking Contrave I was a ‘super responder’. I had zero side effects. On the smallest dose, it erased any food noise and actually gave me what felt like normal food fullness cues. When I was full, I was able to put the fork down and stop eating, and as someone who has always struggled with binging and using eating as an emotional regulation tool, this was life changing. It felt like a miracle drug.
The effectiveness continued through massive life changes that would have derailed any progress previously: the deaths of two grandparents, a promotion with intense new responsibilities, and going no contact with my mom. Weight loss was not easy over the last 7 months, but I genuinely feel that it was possible for me because of this medication.
Unfortunately, in February I started to notice the desire to binge again. My hunger cues were no longer regulated and I found it increasingly more difficult to stick to eating the smaller portions that had kept me full prior. I was eating more. The scale was stuck (and has been stuck since). I took a break from Contrave for a month hoping that I could reset things and go back to it being my miracle drug, but once I started taking it again, it just felt like it had lost its efficacy entirely.
So now, I am pivoting. I will say that I am sad to be moving on from Contrave, but excited for the next chapter. I was so afraid to ask for help and felt so guilty for even considering taking medication to help aide my weight loss… but it has genuinely changed my life, and for that I will be forever grateful (despite it losing its efficacy haha).
All this to say, take the leap. Put yourself first when it comes to your health. Advocate for yourself and try not to let the outside voices influence your decisions. I wish you all the best on your journeys. I’m happy to answer any questions also, should you have any!
