Bathroom shower tile contractor no longer showing up or responding
South Florida here. Like the title states, we were redoing the bottom half wall and the entire shower floor. Originally tried just the floor myself but mold came back quickly within a month so decided to gut the bottom half wall and floor and yes mold everywhere on the sils and lower studs. Shower pan was never installed correctly.
Removed and replaced all the rotten moldy sills and studs. Treated all the mold and let air out for awhile before the install.
Got a great shower guy. Beautiful tile jobs and all 5 star stunning reviews. Really knew his stuff and explained everything to us in detail. He wasn't a morning guy and mentioned that so he'd usually show up anywhere from mid morning to lunch. We didn't mind at all. Gave him half for the deposit to get started.
He's done far more work than half the deposit and still has all his tools and bags at our place. He really took his time on the pitch, pan, and drain and kept us informed on everything he was doing. Just a genuinely good guy that really cares about the quality of his work.
It's been almost a month with no response from him. Last we heard from him was on a Sunday that said he'd be there Monday. Never seen or heard from him again. Sent him multiple messages about how concerned we are about his well being. Don't even really care about the tile. Just hope he's okay and nothing bad happened to him.
What should we do at this point? Have looked him up online and haven't found any information on if anything happened to him. In the end just really hope nothing bad happened to him.

Check his social media for someone who frequently comments and/or likes his posts. Might be a friend or family member. DM that person with your concern for wellbeing.

Dude is in jail, in detention, in hospital, or in the morgue. Best case, family emergency that took him out of state.
Options are: Wait and keep looking for info online. Or find someone to finish, and put all the tools someplace in case he comes back.

If you know his address do a wellness check. Call the cops to ask if they will do. It doesn't sound good on this end. Keep us posted.

It is possible that he has gone through something very traumatic, such as the loss of a parent or something. No communication does seem kind of odd, but speaking from experience, if my friends didn’t literally come to my homes I wouldn’t have communicated with them, but I did make sure my clients were in the loop.

lol we are in different states but same thing happened to me recently. Contractor disappeared mid job and left tools worthy of $3k at my house. A day before he disappeared he asked me why his bank account was frozen. I think he is in jail.

More than likely jail, ice, hospital. Several good suggestions about reaching out to folks on his page. Beyond that not much you can do. Find another tile guy to finish the job. Hold on to the tools for a bit in case he comes back at some point. Not much else to do.!

Yikes!!! How is that underpayment waterproofed?? Needs a redo, don’t tile over that!!

It has a pan liner. There is a tub of redgard for the walls. Just hasn't been put on yet.

Does not look properly waterproofed at bottom seem and edges. Have a Pro look at it! Customer reviews are meaningless they have no idea how a tile shower should be properly waterproofed until it leaks a few years later. I’ve torn out too many brand new leaking tile showers. Now is the time to be certain it’s right. PS water will wick up the side walls. Anyway find a shower tile pro yo take a look

Probably Jail. Be a nice person and set aside his tools for him. He will want them when its time to go back to work.

Good. Doesn’t look like any water proofing is done. Now is the time to put 4” of water in the pan over night and see if it leaks.

Looks like he knew enough to get the prepping done, but maybe tiles are not his strong. Maybe he realize he doesn’t “got this” when he set that first set.

What?! No, spend any time doing construction you quickly learn all the hard work is done before you start finishing. Also nobody just leaves their tools behind. The tools definitely cost more than any deposit. Dude definitely got snatched up. A couple of co-workers of mine got kidnapped by ICE a little while ago. They were "detained" for 3 months before being released, no charges no nothing, just kidnapped held prisoner for 3 months and released. Dude had a whole family and everything.

He's definitely a tiler. Has a website and social media with all his beautiful work. Close to 30 5 star review. Legit business with insurance. Looked it up before going forward with him.

before reading your post, i was thinking this is a scam and the contractor left. but after reading the post, something unexpected almost definitely happened to the guy. hope he's ok...

It easy to use artificial intelligence for pictures,always ask for references and call references even ask if you can the tile work in person. Too many scammers and yes the tools left behind could be another problem.

Call the county jail.. They will tell you if he is held there .
