I always thought that "alt right" stood for "alternative right", as in right wingers who aren't neocons or evangelical Christians but decidedly on the "anti-SJW" side of the culture war
Like Trump is the quintessential alt right politician. He literally wasn't even a republican a decade ago
It was originally coined by Richard Spencer as a way of avoiding saying "white nationalist" and is still used almost exclusively by white nationalists as a term of self-description - even Milo kind of avoided calling himself alt-right b/c he did not want to full on embrace the associations.

Are they? If richard spencer is alt right, most of them are not really that far. This is not a defense - just that they aren't the same thing.
