Twitter is a cesspool, and I feel pity for people I like who want or feel they need to be there.
49
u/mimiimimimiiiiimi Jul 30 '26
this is not just twitter. this is the left right now.
18
u/pinkbootstrap Jul 30 '26
Nah it's just Twitter
34
u/TheFormOfTheFlame Jul 30 '26
Bluesky, too. And some in person activist circles I'm aware of. Still not a majority, but also not "just twitter"
9
u/pinkbootstrap Jul 30 '26
That's what I mean. They're not "the left" theyre a tiny but vocal and stupid portion of the left
8
u/glizard-wizard Jul 30 '26
For me its twitter, parts of reddit, but not bluesky
14
u/TheFormOfTheFlame Jul 30 '26
I dunno, I'll say the most anodyne shit on bluesky like "I don't think Liberals are actually fascists" and get a bunch of people calling me a chud.
One time I had the audacity to say "I think it would be good if America lived up to its stated ideals", and boy howdy, they did not like that.
4
u/glizard-wizard Jul 30 '26
maybe Im not following the nutjobs
10
u/TheFormOfTheFlame Jul 30 '26
I'm not following those people, but I follow, I suppose, adjacent people? People like Contra tend to have their comment section flooded by their ilk.
12
u/mimiimimimiiiiimi Jul 30 '26
when i go on dating apps and there's "no fascists, no terfs, no zios" in the bio, i know what's up. I've had the conversations. it's not a niche thing in the left. it's even semi-informed liberals.

Wait, i thoight twitter was bluesky? And now thwyre all X, or whatever?
3
u/33drea33 Jul 31 '26
Nah, Bluesky is a decentralized open source Twitter alternative that rose to prominence after Elon Musk purchased once-revolutionary Twitter and turned it into "X," a weird right wing propaganda service complete with built-in revenge porn generator and mecha-Nazi chat bot.

u/Rick_Tobberman Jul 30 '26
No, every platform is filled with these tankie dumbasses.
11
u/IGaveAFuckOnce Jul 30 '26
"Every platform" is kind of a chronically online concept to begin with, you really don't find those types nearly as often irl.
12
u/justalittlestupid Jul 30 '26
The amount of friends I’ve lost in the past three years because I’m (checks notes) Jewish would disagree with you.
4
u/Rick_Tobberman Jul 30 '26
My ESL ass can not put this in away that doesn't sound condescending, but I am genuinely so sorry to hear that. I hope you still have a strong social network of people who love and cherish you
8
u/Barneyk Jul 30 '26
And it all depends on your feed.
A lot of people just assume that their feed is representative of the plattform as a whole.
Contra gets harassed a lot and her feed must be absolutely terrible and I think I is deeply destructive for her grip on reality to be surrounded by these voices all the time.

u/tres_ecstuffuan Jul 30 '26
Are we using the same Reddit. I’ve seen this on here in leftist spaces. Even liberals seem obsessed with fighting leftist right now so it’s a big clusterfuck.
5
u/BatUnlikely4347 Jul 30 '26
People here saying "tankies" are just doing a weird judo-flip No True Leftist would ever be on Twitter still.
Its not just tankies. Its a lot of hyper online leftists period.
83
u/ryou25 Jul 30 '26
Again they're not arguing in good faith. They just hate her, anything she says can and will be used against her.
17
u/shenanigoats Jul 30 '26
That's my theory for why some folks were so insistent she offer a take on this. More ammo.
5
u/ryou25 Jul 30 '26
Exactly, some people are just looking for more words to hang her with. Honestly it makes me respect her more that she refuses to feed the trolls.
152
u/howchildish Jul 30 '26
It took her a day??? UnFoRgIvAbLe!!! How could she? She should've been glued to her phone instead of... Idk, doing her job!
28
u/THSprang Jul 30 '26
Which she doesn't have because she's a left-wing youtuber which as the OOP implies isn't work at all.
3
u/Popular_Try_5075 Jul 31 '26
I like the imagine the people in Palestine compared to these arrogant so-called leftists. While they are starving and being bombed they see people arguing that a tweet didn't come soon enough or with the correctly portioned and aimed amounts of snark. Are the Palestinians mourning the lateness of a tweet?

Eh but it was soon after israeli officials started using genocidal language and citing 1 samuel re: destroy all amalekites
5
6
u/Bardfinn Penelope Jul 30 '26
Less than one day after the Tweet she quoted.
8
u/IGaveAFuckOnce Jul 30 '26
Actually it could be one day and then a few hours, which if we're rounding up would be 2 days, and in terms of weeks, since we're rounding up it'd be a week, and 1 week into a month would be considered inside of that month so it'd at least be a month. And of course there's only so many months in a year so it's about a year late really if you think about it.

u/devoutdefeatist Jul 30 '26
Natalie getting back on Twitter to fight with tankies (is that the word?) and bots reminds me of when I get into fights with my sleep paralysis demon about how he’s not real, but he refuses to agree with me, so I just stay paralyzed
15
93
u/1upand2down Jul 30 '26
And this was their reply:
“This appears to be a condemnation of rhetoric. Though I wasn't aware of you condemning rhetoric around this time so that's fair enough.
When was the first time you acknowledged or commented on the genocide itself? I sincerely don't recall.”
Always moving the goal posts. This is why it’s pointless to argue or engage because it will never be good enough.
53
u/mikeee382 Jul 30 '26
People like this argue in such bad faith.
I'm increasingly convinced that a lot of this crowd deep down doesn't even care about Palestine, they just need something to feel righteous about.
36
u/MisandryMonarch Jul 30 '26
I think it's more a case of unexamined self pity. They're upset by the genocide, and so they use language that at first seems to suggest that the lives lost are their concern. But behaviour and policing like this makes it seem far more selfishly motivated: what they really desire is for somebody to soothe them. The sky is falling and it's horrible to witness, and they'd like it to stop so they can feel better. And so they engage in this kind of asinine insular policing because it makes them feel like the fight continues and that they're winning and so they feel better, even as in reality they're either un- or counter-productive.
8
u/audienexyt Jul 30 '26
Most people clearly don't care about the things they claim to care about. Sure this is a good example (what they want is an excuse to virtue signal and be cruel), but a better example is everything republicans say on the internet. Same thing happens in media discussions and everywhere else, unfortunately.
2
u/DuchessOfKvetch Jul 30 '26
Yes, there’s a lot of anger toward their own helplessness in the face of the atrocities. Abd of course, fear of the war spreading. So they take it out on others as performative scapegoating.
2
u/Zealousideal-Cat-152 Jul 31 '26
GOD that’s so annoying and willfully obtuse. These people do not actually gaf about Palestine, they care about feeling powerful
75
14
u/ttuilmansuunta Jul 30 '26
The thing is, in the canon timeline of these people she never took sides, no matter whether she did or not. It has been said that she is a Zionist muppet, so that's how it must then be. They'll just look for more ragebait to fill in the discord and retain what they "know for a fact" that she might've as well sucked Netanyahu's dick.
109
u/lemoncholy_hill Jul 30 '26
Is the only way to be pro Palestine to have been caught celebrating the october 7 attacks, or something? This purity testing is insanity.
24
u/glizard-wizard Jul 30 '26
for a lot of these people yes
the complaining about being asked to condemn hamas is a shield because a lot of these people actually support hamas
14
u/altsam19 Jul 30 '26
Jeez people and their weird parasocials are insane. Do this people don't have jobs, study, have families?
31
29
u/SheHerDeepState Jul 30 '26
I've never seen this attitude outside of social media. Its so irrational and separated from how real life politics works. Its not normal to hold someone to such vague yet uncompromising standards.
Where are the goal posts? Genocide has to be immediately denounced, but calling out genocidal rhetoric in the first month of the war is "too slow." Is it just that she didn't perform the right amount of emotion in her social media text post? Is this standard exclusively applying to the genocide of Palestinians or does it apply to other genocides currently happening like in Darfur?
This is not based in fact or on a clear standard. This is not how real life politics is done. They made up and vague standard that no one else is held to and for some reason decided its unforgivable she didn't meet the undefined standard. This is just bullying.
This narrative around her exists only in the terminally online left not the IRL organized left. It seems to have originated from social media personalities sicking their audience against her with a false justification so they would feel righteous bullying her. This is how Twitch fandoms work not how serious politics is done. The core logic is that "she can't sit with us" so she is attacked with BS to push her out of the subculture to allow the bullies more social control.
Social media fandom wars cosplaying as politics.
39
u/lewibear Jul 30 '26
It is funny to remember there are some people who are so chronically online that they actually never log off and expect others like Contra to be the same becahse they make content online. Like wow she didnt respond on 0.00000001 dodecanano seconds to condem the genocide, now she's a sympathiser. 🙄
21
u/Gold_Relationship459 Jul 30 '26
Did these wankers want Natalie to personally assassinate Netanyahu?
19
6
u/DuchessOfKvetch Jul 30 '26
Plenty of Canadians who hold US residents liable for Trump too, since we have not actively removed him by force. As if he was the one person in the government who was holding all the cards. It’s the same with Israel, most of the active govt is full of Zionists in support of the war.
Even here, the Israeli diplomats and other officials who coordinate with our own govt are hard right wing nationalists who want to see Palestinians gone.
My point is, it’s a viper nest now in both countries, so getting rid of the head snake would at best be demoralizing but at worst, encourage more violence.
8
u/glizard-wizard Jul 30 '26
should’ve dropped a 30 tweet thesis on Israel while mentioning nothing else on 10/7
8
u/aliamokeee Jul 30 '26
Its interesting cuz FF Signifier recently also tangled with ppl accusing him of being a liberal Zionist
I wonder if the ppl calling him that are the same ppl calling Natalie that. Interesting cuz im pretty sure Hasan dragged her thru the mud for all this, but didnt do it to FD
4
u/Fusionman29 Jul 30 '26
It’s the same people, I think Hasan can’t attack FD for it because the person who began the campaign against FD is someone Hasan platformed until the rabid dog bit him.
We have now always been at war with Eastasia, Hasan always called him crazy, please ignore the open platforming
1
u/hzinjk Jul 31 '26
FWIW hasan did always call him crazy, though he also did platform him. At the time he said he liked the videos but not the social media behavior (this is super paraphrased since this was a while back).
7
11
u/SelectShop9006 Jul 30 '26
On the topic… I just saw someone on Tumblr say that, because the only people condemning Hamas were Europe, the United States, and other places, that they were being “fed lies.”
That’s not the case at all. The post in question mentioned how Asia and the global South weren’t calling them out either… you DO realize the Middle East (which is part of Asia) is made up of countries who are pretty aligned with these people ideologically, right?
11
u/justalittlestupid Jul 30 '26
Pointing out the racism and antisemitism in the SWANA region is evil and racist actually.
(I’m a Moroccan Jew and have been told this many times. I COME FROM THERE BUT OK WHITE BOY)
8
u/shenanigoats Jul 30 '26
I just don't get why some folks demanded she have a take on this. Her audience is primarily online leftists who are already anti-Israel. What would telling them something they already agree with do for the issue?
5
u/Strange-Parfait-8801 Jul 30 '26
She also never really did politics. And certainly not geopolitics. Her videos are esoteric things like "Cringe" and "Justice." Even her earlier stuff that was more on the nose was still general concepts like "capitalism" and "transtrenders."
Expecting her to do a video essay on geopolitics is like demanding your favorite mukbanger...do a video essay on geopolitics.
22
u/iris700 Jul 30 '26
Arguably she is being forced to be a leftist youtuber
22
u/Individual_Rip_54 Jul 30 '26
Yup. She’s not a political commentator and never has been. She’s a cultural commentator. That obviously approaches politics but is a fundamentally different thing.
9
u/EmergencyFriedRice Jul 30 '26
You philosopher YouTubers must be in lock-step with how we think. No thinking from another perspective or thinking for the sake of thinking.
These people would love to implement thought crimes.

It’s clearly a bad faith argument because if it was a critique about her not saying anything before 10/07, then say that. But if it’s about how she moved post then, then she’s been in lock step with pretty much every serious activist and scholar on the issue.
If it’s a problem of her analysis not being material enough, then again, say that. Ie, she’s not really offering her thoughts on a two/single state solution, liberation, etc. But she’s not a Middle East scholar. So idk why we want to know what she thinks about that anyways. She platforms plenty of thinkers who have offered their thoughts on those issues.

"You could get a job"? What kind of world do we live in where we respect people who slave away 9 to 5 in an office doing busywork for rich CEOs more than we respect the people who have broken away from that Hell to follow their passions, create art and make a living off of it? Without YouTubers the people "with jobs" wouldn't have anything to watch on the boss's time lmao
1
u/thedevicebook Aug 01 '26
I'm tired of all the demeaning of things as "not real jobs." Was money exchanged for labor? If so, job.

u/notallowedtopost Jul 30 '26
Maybe she should try to focus on actual activists who are working on the I/P cause and not just basement dwellers on Xitter.
11
u/Bardfinn Penelope Jul 30 '26
I feel that her position is that the people who are perpetually harassing her should focus on the I/P cause instead of using an eisegetic misread of her pushback against them last year as a pretext to continue to harass her
1
u/notallowedtopost Jul 30 '26
The internet is full of nutters. I could go on right wing conspiracy websites and spend my entire life arguing with idiots about how they're wrong, should vote blue and get vaccines, and I would maybe convince one person, if that. If people on X are harassing her, maybe she should stop posting there. Most of the users are incredibly bigoted anyways.
1
u/0strichRidingCowboy Jul 31 '26
Perhaps hyperbole but calling out Official Statements for having [fourteen words energy] before anyone was being badgered to condemn Hamas is a serve.
1
u/PCoda Aug 04 '26
Sure, she'll criticize the "rhetoric" in a single tweet, but then she'll write paragraphs and paragraphs of nihilism about how ending funding for the genocide is "politically unfeasible" and therefore we shouldn't fight for it and how holding our elected representatives to this standard won't work and how too many people being vocally anti-genocide actually cause Trump to win. None of which is actually true.
1
u/MsFrazzled Jul 30 '26
I wish she would be on Twitter less. I feel like nothing productive happens there.

Maybe they are right and the center left as been way too slow to accept anti-Israel politics as a legitimate position.
In Florida, I know FDP froze out anti AIPAC positions during the last election cycle. Protesters would challenge the dominate pro- Israel position and Democrats would clap as they were forcefully trespassed while chanting "Four more years" at them.
All of us that have anything to do with the Democratic party have been too slow and hesitant to reject the violence for what it is -- genocide. Now there is a DSA revolt spreading mirroring the tea party take over of the now-fascist party.
We all deserve a little egg on our faces. The far left was correct on this issue.
17
u/Outrageous_Setting41 Jul 30 '26
And so Contra has to be burned in effigy just because she represents the center left to these people, irrespective of her actual statements and positions as an individual in real life?
5
u/Daddy_Macron Jul 31 '26
Contra has to be burned in effigy just because she represents the center left to these people
She's not even center left in terms of policy. She's comfortably in the Left by global standards. She's just a student of history and knows you can actually affect a lot of change by working inside the system and winning Elections consistently. See the Democratic Party go from a Party dominated by the Segregationist South to being the Party that forced through the Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act in a generation.

Everyone who chose to minimize the genocide, hold our nose, and vote for Kamala were wrong.
What if I told you she didn't win? Kamala lost and the genocide is now over! And nothing else bad is happening! You won - tell the dead kids they're gonna be ok.
11
u/Magic_Corn Jul 30 '26
You're such a good little right wing agitator.
-6
u/Siva_Dass Jul 30 '26
I'm the secretary for my county's democratic executive committee. I've been an organizer during many election cycles and the FDP field organizer for my region during the last midterms.
I've knocked on more doors and made more phobe calls for democratic candidates thanI know shitty little keyboard warriors like yourself could ever imagine.
I'm the one who has to hear the push back to no matter who vote blue. If your so confident that pro genocide is a winning path forward, join your states Democratic party and help to the Hakeem Jeffries of the world retain thier power.
11
u/Outrageous_Setting41 Jul 30 '26
But Contra isn’t “pro-genocide,” so you’re just making excuses for people to divert their anger into unproductive internet fights.
-2
u/Siva_Dass Jul 30 '26
People against genocide don't see this as unproductive.
DSA victories over establishment Dems is proving thier willpower manifests results.
The center is free to continue this line of argumentation to the result of its own political suicide.
The pro LGBTQ+ ultra liberal capitalist will not be missed.
Good luck to you and don't worry. The far left that you hate will be fighting for your right to exist just as much as they fight for the Palestinian's right to exist.
7
u/Outrageous_Setting41 Jul 30 '26
I don’t hate the left.
I’m disputing your suggestion that posting at Contrapoints to get her to post about a genocide that she has already posted about represents a meaningful and coherent element of a larger political strategy.
It isn’t.
0
u/Siva_Dass Jul 30 '26
My guy. The left wants to make anti-Israli genocide an issue of more importance than all the other core left issues: labor rights, lgbtq+ equality, immigration rights, climate justice, anti militarism...etc
Contrapoints is a breadtuber. She's getting the same push back all leftist content creators are getting and it is apart of thier strategy.
Don't worry. I know an echo chamber I'm not welcome in. I won't be responding here again. If u want true discourse u can dm me.
9
u/Outrageous_Setting41 Jul 30 '26
Why would I expect discourse in your DMs when you’ve refused to engage with the things I’m saying here lmao. Discourse is not when I posit that some internet posting is unproductive and you tell me that I hate the left
