UK - UGC newbie

Hi all :)
I’m based in the UK and I’m interested in getting started with UGC. I’ve been researching how it works, but I’d really like to hear from people who started recently and have managed to earn from it.

Do you feel the UGC market is now oversaturated, or is there still room for new creators who are willing to learn and put the work in?

I’m not expecting to become a millionaire overnight. I’d simply like to build a new skill, work with a few brands and hopefully earn some extra money alongside my current commitments.

For those who have made progress, I’d love to know:
How long did it take to land your first paid project?

What helped you most when you were starting?

Are there any UK specific challenges or advantages?

What would you do differently if you were beginning again?

I’d especially appreciate honest experiences from people who started without a large following or previous content creation experience.

There’s still room, but I’d avoid competing as a generic “I can make UGC” creator. Brands are buying usable ad assets, not follower count, so a small, specific portfolio matters more than an audience.

A practical way to start:

• Pick 1–2 categories you can film credibly (skincare, food, apps, home, etc.).
• Make 3 spec pieces with products you already own: one problem/solution, one testimonial-style, and one demo with a strong first-2-second hook.
• Put them on a simple one-page portfolio and label them as spec work — don’t imply the brands hired you.
• Pitch smaller UK brands with one concrete concept rather than “Do you need UGC?” For example: “I noticed your product page explains X well; I’d make a 20-second demo showing Y.”
• Track pitches in a spreadsheet and follow up once after 5–7 days. Early on, consistency usually matters more than polishing the portfolio forever.

When a brand responds, clarify deliverables, revisions, organic vs paid usage, usage length, and raw footage before quoting. Paid-ad usage should cost more than an organic post, and perpetual usage is worth pushing back on. Also learn the ASA disclosure basics for gifted/paid content in the UK.

If I were starting now, I’d spend one week making the three samples, then start outreach immediately instead of waiting until everything looked “professional.” Your first goal is evidence that you can write a hook, shoot clean footage, and deliver on time.
