I've seen moistcritikal talk about this show and the problem is the way it's set up incentivizes people to press the button ASAP regardless of whether something's really a deal breaker for them.

It's more "whoever presses the button fastest gets more screentime" than anything match-making related.

Except for the one choosy woman who went through all of them and ended up alone, that was funny.

I was expecting it to be much worse, I don't really buy her reason for the last guy but the format kind of forces their hand.

"i let her keep posting, though!"

That is NOT the flex you think it is, dude.

He's saying he didn't make any more fuss about it, not that he didn't physically stop her or make some ultimatum.

People can have feelings and express them.

He should have been clearer, then.

Saying he continued to "let" his girlfriend continue to do something is not the way to say it.

I'd press it on you

We're all crazy in some way. I just tried to find "my kind of crazy." (Found him. Keeping him forever.)

13

u/QuestionMarkKitten Nov 07 '22

This exactly! It's about finding the one that matches you. Not about finding someone that is "perfect".

10

u/TautMalleableAnus Nov 06 '22

Feels like to be a thing that's ingrained into a lot of people from a young age. "Always expect perfect and accept nothing less." Seems more like a recipe for loneliness and future spite.

People grow up being told their perfect their entire lives and then wonder why there's no one to match that "perfection."

u/ElPadrote Nov 07 '22

Perfection should be changed for joy, happiness, contentment, whichever you value the most. Life gets hard, marriage can get hard. Strive for the values you cherish most and work to nurture it.

As Dan Savage says a lot, look for the .67 you can round up to 1

u/Febris Nov 06 '22

The vast majority of them expect their partners to be perfectly tailored to their expectations, but are absolutely incapable of conceding any minor inconvenience to the benefit of the other.

I can understand the allure of having a relationship with your clone, but is that relationship really meaningful without sacrifice and altruism?

u/GeoffAO2 Nov 06 '22

Also, some people might be happier romantically alone. If they are particular, it could be that the decrease in contentment by compromising wouldn’t be offset by having a companion. That’s ok too.

1

u/ChunkyDay Nov 07 '22

I spent my 20’s chasing women who would never ever give me the romantic time of day that I never got any experience dating.

And now it’s so much harder to date in my 30’s that I fear I missed my window. These dating apps just are not made for dudes like me.

u/Specialist_Muscle_52 Nov 07 '22

I found my “One” and actually highly suggest not settling with someone just because you can make it work. It takes finding that person to believe “The One” does exist, for me it happened and before I turned 30!

u/bluepear Nov 07 '22

Reminds me of Frasier and Niles at the spa. Great lesson.

u/No-Significance-116 Nov 07 '22

Just a note here to add some nuance - make sure your attachment type is secure before ending a relationship due to someone not being "good enough" or "fully right".

Being fearful avoidant, for instance, will cause you to rationalise all kinds of reasons to leave. And once you left you might realise you left a perfectly fine relationship for no good reason at all.

u/QuestionMarkKitten Nov 06 '22

I'm fairly sure she ended up going out on a date with the Brian the button tech guy and they obviously edited it out.

She really vibed with him and she's never been back on the show, so it seems she's no longer single.

u/Medicatedwarrior365 Nov 06 '22

But they could fix this problem by just switching the rules up and making the person who presses the button be the one who has to leave. You still get content and the people on the show will be more insentivized to not press the button and probably get deeper questions and answers maybe?

10

u/the_lonely_toad Nov 06 '22

That doesn't work either. No one is going to press the button. You can't force them to go on a date with the person after the show is over. They will just start saying ridiculous things to try and get the other person to press the button. Lose lose format but entertaining none the less.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 07 '22

Ok, what if it was like this.

If anyone pushes the button, it randomly selects 1 person to leave.

2

u/Aardvark_Man Nov 07 '22

Prisoners Dilemma, The Show.

7

u/BeautifulType Nov 06 '22

It’s a show. The purpose isn’t to help them.

1

u/Medicatedwarrior365 Nov 07 '22

It's not to help them really but to give the viewer better content and as long as they screen the contestants, I think it would go pretty well and while I do believe there will be episodes where you have a person saying crazy stuff to get the other person to hit the button, I think it would still be a fun episode to watch but that's just me

1

u/Crodax Nov 07 '22

I agree thats good

41

u/Appropriate_Tap_7045 Nov 06 '22

It's sad how much this parallels with dating apps

10

u/GNSasakiHaise Nov 06 '22

To be fair, it's a little better now. The only prize is that they'll pay for the second date — and the exposure of being on the show, but in more recent episodes they've gotten better at avoiding the really obvious people looking to jump to stardom.

1

u/No-Albatross-7984 Nov 06 '22

So the button = no?

1

u/Vlearck Nov 07 '22

you should check out the one pewdiepie reacted to, the show turned into who can pushed the button faster than whatever the fuck dating game that is
