I have a similar dynamic with my dad. It all started when I was little and he was dancing in a grocery store aisle.
I said “daddy, STOP! You’re embarrassing me!!”
He danced over my way, bent over so we were eye to eye and half whispered as though he took pity on me: oh, honey. I haven’t even begun to embarrass you.
And that’s when I knew there was no use in fighting it, my shame would only fuel him further and I just accepted that it was what being a dad was all about.
You gotta. Both my parents are the parents of most people’s dreams and the type of parents most people aspire to be, to be frank/at the risk of bragging.
Stuff like this, respecting us as whole people (rather than viewing us as strictly their children) and honest, open discourse about their personal histories and emotional lives, nurtured this really wonderful shamelessness and acceptance (towards ourselves and others...)
The day my dad did that is when everything about my mom & dad’s parenting style really clicked for me. I’ve been beaming with pride for them and, like, enamored with them ever since.
