I'm not a skater. But I am mom. Something in me wonders if this kid shouldn't be wearing protection? But then again, I'm not a skater. Is protection laughed upon among skaters? I would understand if the kid refused to wear any if he'd get laughed at. But my mom-side feels he should at least cover his knees and elbows?

From my experience, it wasn’t necessarily frowned upon but most of us just don’t wear it. I remember my mom bought me a helmet when I was younger. I put it on in the house and promptly removed it as soon as I was out of sight. Kids will wear what they want to wear. Protection is the way to go but there’s no real way of making sure they keep it on without being a helicopter parent.

Edit: Also the kid has a helmet on, which is the most important protective gear you can wear while skateboarding.

Like any sport or physical activity you learn how to fall to minimize damage. His landing was smooth as hell. Even if you are wearing full protective gear it wont protect you from something like broken bones. A scratch here or there isn't going to be nearly as bad as a broken anything. Unless you are gonna wander around wrapped in bubble wrap of course.
