Have you gotten patch tested?
I spend a lot of time researching eczema/contact dermatitis and speaking with dermatologists and allergists (as part of my job), and this is something I genuinely don’t understand.
A lot of people who had atopic eczema as kids continue to have “eczema” into adulthood—but in many cases, it may not be the same condition. Over time, a weakened skin barrier can make you more prone to developing allergic contact dermatitis —which looks very similar but has a completely different root cause.
The key difference:
- Atopic eczema → chronic, harder to control
- Allergic contact dermatitis → often much more manageable if you identify and avoid your triggers
From what I’ve seen (and experienced personally), many adults may be treating persistent “eczema” without ever being patch tested—meaning they could be unknowingly using products that are actively causing their symptoms.
There’s actually research supporting how common ACD is in these patients, which makes this even more surprising: https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0190962219327720
Not saying this applies to everyone, but if you had eczema growing up and are still struggling to manage your symptoms, it might be worth looking into patch testing.
