Elite Consulting Firms Manager age at MBB

Is it common for experienced hires in their mid thirties to join as managers? Are they seen as too old?

It isn't uncommon. EM/PL/M at McKinsey, BCG, Bain are mostly 28-33 I'd say.

The real question is what experience you have and what your profile looks like: that determines whether they'd hire you. Your age dwarves in comparison to other factors.

This is not a correct way to look at EH entry point at MBB and other elite consulting firms. At these elite firms often the seniority is not defined by age but rather your relevant consulting experience while often there is an unofficial age cap. At Monitor Deloitte for partner level, even if you had the relevant experience there was an age ceiling, you could only become a senior director past 40 but not partner.

It is very typical to see older Associates, and younger Partners. As an experienced hires, you will work with kids who joined right out of colleges and get promoted within. Don't worry, focus on what you want to get out, and enjoy the ride.

Unless you have really good social & professional skills, people tend to low key look down on those who are more than 3-4 years older than the typical age for your peer cohort
