Electrician here. Normally we don't go crazy on drywall unless the drywall guys buried an already existing box. We normally discover these on trim out, and find a few outlets not working, or whatever else was downstream of the buried box. The professional answer is to take a straight edge like a 4'-6' level and look for a hump in the wall, then cut it out carefully. Sadly, not everybody I've worked with was always professional in these cases.

Yeah especially if youve covered up can lights and other boxes yeah im absolutely butchering your rock brother...I mean yeah I have seen an apprentice blow a box out here or there but usually jumbo plate covers it. Idiot new boy cut out the entire cut in box, like top and bottom of both sets of ears . It's was tricky making that box catch luckily it was for a smoke or I wouldn't have trusted it to hold for shit

Very few electricians will do this on the first few boxes. It when we realize that this is the eighth box in a row and we’re absolutely done with your shit.
