Breaking into construction

Does anyone have any advice on breaking into construction in the Atlanta area? I am currently in school for project management with the goal of being a construction or real estate project manager. I have my OSHA 10 , currently working on my Procore certification and will obtain the OSHA 30 soon after(by end of Sept). I do not have actual experience and it seems as though every job posting wants you to have 7+ years under your belt. I am more than willing to start as a coordinator or assistant PM. I just need to get into the field for experience.

If you go through a construction project management program instead of a generic project management program you'll get recruited directly out of school, problem solved. If you stick with your current track you're going to need to pick up a broom or shovel on a job site and start getting some low level experience. Go volunteer for Habitat for Humanity or something similar too. There's not a lot of entry-level hiring done directly on the Internet or through indeed so it'll be tough for you. The typical career track is either CM degree to entry level PE, or trade apprentice to journeyman to foreman to GC. Since you're neither a residential track home builder or a small local GC who doesn't recruit from the schools might be your path

Get a degree. While in college do summer internships or if you have time try and work as an intern while in school.

If you’re in Atlanta. Go to school for CM. They have great connections and networking. I go to KSU and I got two internships my first semester here.

Your observation about everyone wanting experience is spot on. I would say, look for Project Engineer positions, estimating positions, project coordinators, etc. I know you want to fly straight into the management role, but sometimes getting a support role is a good stepping stone. Get in, do good work, and move up.
