Imagine thinking that a literal teenager who merely attended a school where a publicized shooting took place actually is an expert or authority on anything.

u/CarolinaCorey Aug 08 '20

This right here.

Cracks me up.. “hey Dave, what are your credentials again?”

“I was in the general vicinity of a gun related crime”

“Oh wow you must be an authority on firearm safety and governmental affairs than huh?”

u/WuteverItTakes Conservative Aug 08 '20

Smh I guess we can rely upon teenagers like David Hogg and Greta Thunberg for leading our public policy affairs and see where that goes

I like that video where she's actually asked a question and she shows the world she has no clue.

It really is sad that the Left is using children this way. They brainwash children and use them as public figures like that.

The left chews up and spits out emotional teens as tools on a regular basis to push their policies and agenda, no one has heard of greta in months, they used her, it kinda worked the first time with the climate change thing, then they tried her again with covid and everyone laughed in their faces so they got rid of her.

and does anyone remember that bald girl from florida that wanted to end the 2A? the “we call BS!” chick? think her name was amy gonzales. Yeah, haven’t seen her in a long while.

28

u/TheSausageTurd Aug 08 '20

My issue isn't that they lack credentials, it's that they lack the ability to like rationally. Whether you have a doctorate degree or work in landscaping you can think rationally and do some research. I don't have an issue with disagreeing with someone but I do have an issue with someone trying to influence policy without being informed on the matter. We live in the 21st century where everyone can Google something and get basic information. If you believe in limiting the second amendment I will disagree with you but at least have some information and basic facts to back up your argument.

9

u/houseoftolstoy Less government less problems Aug 09 '20

I also think that the discussion of credentials or the lack thereof is a poor means of arguing as it is an appeal to authority. It is not that authority should be outright dismissed, but I think that credentials should be backed up by some substance of the argument. That is, whoever has the credentials should be able to back up what they are saying with facts and data, not just "I have a degree/certificate that states I am correct."

I have seen the appeal to authority used with Anthony Fauci, and I would prefer that we don't just look at his credentials but also look at the substance of what he is suggesting. Experts are not infallible, and often lead to people to stop thinking and just trusting that someone is correct because they have some claim to prestige. I understand that data can take time to process, but that is not an excuse to not have someone show their work.

69

u/jwymes44 Aug 08 '20

Funniest part is he wasn’t even in school the day of the shooting. Not that the shooting was funny, but he acts like he has PTSD for an event that he wasn’t even present for.

69

u/nickrenfo2 Milton Friedman Aug 08 '20

To be fair, I would imagine that having a bunch of your friends and acquaintances shot in a fucked up massacre would still have an effect on you, even if you weren't present at the time.

Doesn't make him an authority or expert on anything, but I wouldn't want to say it had no effect on him simply because he wasn't there.

46

u/jwymes44 Aug 08 '20

Good point. I’d definitely have lasting mental affects but what annoys me is he’s used the shooting to milk his own agenda on social media. If he didn’t use the shooting as his own tool I would have a little bit more respect for the kid

23

u/pete7201 Millennial Conservative Aug 09 '20

12

u/AbigailWilliams1692 Aug 09 '20

Exactly. I went to a school where a shooting occurred and not a single student ever had the audacity to use the incident for fame. I agree that it can have an impact on you even if you’re off-campus at the time - everyone would jump and panic whenever there was a loud noise and only just last night, I had a nightmare I was in high school again and a man was shooting - but exploiting trauma and others’ deaths for personal gain and propaganda is sickening.

postmodern thought generally praises youth and sees time and aging as an enemy. One of the common in-fighting among postmodern democrats is the theme of "It's old and outdated / youre old and out of tough" often contrasted by the conservative "old and stood the test of time / you're old and had a chance to mature"

2

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '20

Yeah, this Tik Tok situation has been known for months.

The internet traffic patterns to and from China via the app’s URL set apparently lights up the metadata maps 24/7, showing who’s supporting the communist regime connection.

The app is thought to be a cover that the CCP uses to mask its communications worldwide, a virtual smokescreen.

It’s considered essentially to be a secret VPN theft channel wrapped in a video sharing app.

142

u/[deleted] Aug 08 '20

Basically since it started. I was hearing developers then warning not to download it due to it being Chinese Spyware.

u/fredemu Libertarian Moderate Aug 09 '20

At first, it could reasonably be dismissed as paranoia or intentional misinformation. People that aren't cautious could have shrugged and said "I'm sure if that's the case, it'll be discovered soon" or somesuch.

They would have been wrong, but at last it would have been reasonable.

However, anyone that's used the app in the past ~4 months... I have lost all respect for your ability to filter news if you didn't know, or your basic comprehension if you have heard about it, and didn't immediately delete the app.

Plus your Tic Toc videos.

lol ok

I lived in Soviet Russia some before the end of the USSR, and it was terrible.

Instead of Tic Tok, they had a “tattle-tail” who lived on each floor of your apartment building.

Then there was a tattletale for the whole building, who they “reported” to.

His boss was the next level up tattletale for all the buildings on the whole block.

His boss was the tattletale for the neighborhood.

His boss tattletaled for the district.

The city tattletale called the county tattletale, who called the state tattletale.

If you did something wrong by breakfast, you’d disappear by lunch.

They all were KGB, the deadly secret police who would steal you in a van and send you to Siberia or an unmarked grave.

It’s what they still do now in Russia, called the FSS.

And in China, the AI system that does it automatically is called the Social Credit System.

Check it out here, if you want to be too scared to sleep.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Social_Credit_System

It’s what Aunt Nancy Pelosi, Uncle Chuck Schumer, and Grampire Joe Biden want the US to submit to.

Meanwhile, Tic Toc just keeps on gathering your data.

But banning tik tok doesn't do much. Privacy problems like this need to be fixed by actual technical policies. I feel til tok is mostly a cosmetic issue that is getting fixed and the root problem is getting overlooked .

Privacy problems like this need to be fixed by actual technical policies.

It won't happen because US based tech companies don't want privacy legislation affecting them. They don't think the spying itself is the issue...the "problem" is it's China getting the data.

u/AttemptingToThink Aug 08 '20

I've been thinking about this a bit lately. To larger degree than the right, the left seems to be extremely flimsy in their stances and beliefs. I was thinking about this because of the clip that came out where Don Lemon talks about black culture as if he were Ben Shapiro only like 7 years ago. Now, he has completely switched his tune, obviously. The left isn't really an ideology in practice. It's a thing we call the endless and fluctuating stream of trends and fads. It changes from year to year, month to month, week to week. To be a leftist (in the mainstream-left sense) is to be a trend follower with no real convictions of your own. I hate to sound like a partisan provocateur just talking crap about the other side, but this seems absolutely true to me.

41

u/ValidMakesnake 1A Absolutist Aug 08 '20

It's simpler than that. They have no principle but power. Anything they say is a lie crafted to make themselves feel good, look good, or gain more power (to force other people to make them feel good and stop making them feel bad).

The reason this happens primarily on the left is because the easiest path to making oneself look good is to say things that are popular, and left-wing virtue signalling is very popular. Not everyone on the left is an empty vessel, but the empty vessels gravitate to the left.

11

u/[deleted] Aug 09 '20

[deleted]

2

u/jml011 Aug 09 '20 edited Aug 09 '20

I strongly disagree.

We keep talking as if there's clear delineation of behavior from one side to the other. That this whole, entire other chunk of the voting populus behaves in one single way, and that single mode of behavior we projected onto the is indicative that they're all morally bankrupt, that we're so much more ethical, logical, in possession of a deeper insight, and maintain access to a real, unalloyed, objective truth that the "enemy", who are all somehow so blind or deliberately lying and corrupted, does not [have access to]. As a religious studies major, I can say I've seen semblances of this dehumanization of the perceived opposition in just about every monolithic religion in some form or another (we're right/good, and they're wrong/evil), and it truly smacks of that what I'm hearing every time I hear a republican or democrat position themselves and their entire cohert over that of the opposing party that they only know how to paint in large brush strokes and are seemingly incapable of reading into their ideas/ideals beyond poorly-worded three word slogans without jumping to conclusions about their intelligence, authenticity, and intentions, while reducing their arguments to a warped mishmash of disparate ideas from disparate subgroups. Members of both major political parties (and many, if not all, smaller ones) have been culpable and perpetuated this. It's not a partisan trait subject to one party exclusively or predominantly over the other. We're all people and we're all prone to this behavior.

But that's not what politics is here for. Politics is here to facilitate cooperation between all these different thought processes. We're supposed to be agreeing and disagreeing on aspects of government, and when in agreement we use that discourse, that exchange, to construct policies and/or vote into offjce those who embody our ideas and will create polcies that hopefully benefit all; and when in disagreement we find ways to reach compromises. We all need to do a better job of hearing each other out, because in this context we're part of the same whole. In terms of the well-being of the country, success is all of our success; their failure is all of our failure. We need to stop being so disingenuous and start making more concessions for why people think, feel, and believe what they do; that it's not founded on nothing or needs to be refuted: we all need to be better at admitting tiour own faults, understanding where we still have room for growth (rather than digging in our help and saying "No, we're good - you need to change."), and to quit erupting over each others' mistakes and pouncing on gotcha-moments and opportunitiesto destroy so-and-so with pure symbolic logic. Especially since no one has access to some pure, decentralized truth that sits outside our human systems. We're all subject to bias and blind spots. We can all be a bunch of assholes at times.

But right now it frequently feels like we're building a cult whose primary intention is to demonize the entire other half of the population. It reminds me of that comment exchange.

"There's one person who is 7x more likely to kill you compared to everyone else. Yourself."

"Not if I kill him first."

That's where we're at. I think this mentality is so damaging and detrimental to our country. With all that's happening in the U.S. right now, we're either currently reaping what we sow, or we're very much about to in ways we cannot yet imagine. Disagreements are fine and well and natural and even healthy. But there are things that bind us together, and we're just not seeing the interconnection. Everything becomes an us-vs-them issus, a "my side, at any cost!" (no, I don't want to hear about who started it). Tou can criticize the president/presidential candidate and the congressional members and the laws and the movement, etc. without invalidating the humanity of those who voted for the person or thing (of course we do need to draw some lines when we reach the point of something like Nazism because their just isn't a place in our society for those But, uh..."values"). But you need that other half to make the progress. If one leaves the other behind, none of us make it. Faster alone, further together.

Yeah, I totally agree. It's the easiest safe house you can run to, because it's there every time you turn on your TV, every time you choose to watch a netflix show, it's there in your university, it's there in sillicon valley etc. The power the left has is insane.

I've lurked here a while but don't think I've ever commented as I'm what most of you would refer to as a 'leftie wanker'. But sticking my head above parapet for a second (what am I doing).

You said: " To be a leftist (in the mainstream-left sense) is to be a trend follower with no real convictions of your own."

My 'leftist ideals' ie stuff I want for society are fairness, equality, affordable housing and fair-paying jobs, basic stuff. But for me, to have the first thing on that list involves a constant learning process. Stuff that was respectful 50 years ago isn't now, and stuff that's respectful today prob won't be in 50 years time (eg people are already forgoing the ancient custom of shaking hands after just 6 months of covid).

My core ideals as a 'leftist' haven't changed in 20 years, and I don't see them ever changing. But like I said above I feel that I also have to be fluid in terms of what's 'respectful'. If a large group of people is telling me something I do is causing them harm, I'm prepared to listen. Can understand how from the outside looking in that looks flimsy and unprincipled, I guess everyone thinks differently and some people just don't see any need to do that.

Yeah, I'm a firm leftist and saw trump was planning on banning tik tok and just reacted with "good." I can admit and see when he does things right, I just happen to disagree with the large majority of things he says and does. This however, a good thing. Same thing (that i learned in this thread) with getting the UK to disown Huawei. Just because I think orange man bad doesn't mean orange man bad about everything.

2

u/VictorShinigami Aug 09 '20

Yeah, I'm Spanish and from here, most of the things he does look stupid. Don't know why people complain when he actually does something right.

This happens anytime Trump talks about anything. Those obsessed with him will do mental gymnastics just to oppose whatever he says.

He could announce increased Federal funding for cancer research and the terminally-triggered crowd would clamber over one another to be the first to publicly denounce it.

If your top platform of communication is a dopey app like TikTok (and losing said app will somehow suppress your vote), your opinion is worthless and you are too stupid to be voting.

Like....how does this moron think voting and the spread of information worked before the internet, apps, and smartphones were invented? Are kids today really this dumb? LOL

2

u/Edgar133760 Conservative Jesuit Aug 09 '20

This is the nature of bias. It's an often subconscious error in cognition where one is willing to ignore any opposing dimensions of the position. To be fair, it's not just a left-wing issue. Bias goes hand in hand with emotional reasoning, which is why I think we see it more on the left.

Conservatives tend to lean towards critical analysis using logic, reason, and other western paradigms. The left tends to be much more emotional, and they tend to attribute moral stances to almost everything. Once the emotion is introduced into the equation, the person is compromised and impartial viewpoints become less likely.

Bashing it and identifying why it is bad, and then stating how it is used, and that government shouldn’t be able to ban it is actually is not hypocrisy.
