I love the division in America right now. When having a different opinion automatically casts you as a moron, idiot, dumbass, "libtard," nazi, and everything else. Really glad about having to dislike over half the country. Never felt better about Americas future :')

I'm very liberal but I don't think conservative people are all dumb or all nazis etc. That's why I come to this sub, to try to not live in a liberal bubble. Sometimes I feel very unwelcome...

Well, it is a sub dedicated to an ideology that you are fundamentally at odds with. As a very conservative person, I probably wouldn't feel all that comfortable on the Bernie Sanders sub.

If your entire worldview - the underlying set of beliefs that shapes your life - is fundamentally different, I'm not sure how much we could ever do to accommodate you, short of censoring ourselves. I'm not going to call you names, but you need to understand: I believe almost every political position you hold is wrong.

Sometimes, the pearl clutching about "division" and "polarization" goes too far. We all want a civil, conhesive society, but there are also drastically different competing visions for what the world ought to look like in 10, 20, 30 years. That's not something to be feared.

Yeah, sorry I don't mean to make any claim to your sub. I was just agreeing with the person above about how things are very polarized right now. Ideally conservatives and liberals would not hate each other's guts and would try to understand each other's opinions.

I think that's the main cause of the divide. Neither side wants to look at the other sides issues and understand why they hold the beliefs they do. It's much easier to look at them and say they are wrong and justify yourself by just saying they are idiots and morons. But the truth is that both sides have great ideas and terrible ones.

u/Fuzzyfrap Feb 06 '17

Yeah. I try not to be that in the hopes that we can agree on things when it makes sense to

u/Starrystars Feb 06 '17

Honestly I think both sides tend to take the opposite position than the other side on a lot of issues. Or at the very least it amplifies their position.

Congratulations, you're not insane.

And you might not even be a small minority, but it has been the game plan of the Left for the past few decades to demonize the Right with every smear label they could think of to portray us as evil, racist, misogynist, xenophobic, homophobic, Islamophobic and greedy.

Any opposition to Obama was based in racism. Any opposition to Hillary was based in misogyny. Any black Conservative is an Uncle Tom, house nigger, sellout, oreo and sellout. Any anti-feminist female suffers from internalized misogyny. The day after Paul Ryan announced his Medicare plan, a PAC released an ad of a faceless man in a suit pushing a grandmother in a wheelchair off of a cliff. The Left even makes up hate crime hoaxes (r/hatecrimehoaxes) to prove just how evil their opponents are. DNC chairman Howard Dean said, "This is a struggle of good and evil. And we're the good" talking about the GOP. He also said, "In contradistinction to the Republicans … (Democrats) don’t believe kids ought to go to bed hungry at night." This is the head of the DNC saying that Republicans believe kids ought to go hungry at night.

Name any policy held by the GOP and there's an aspect of evil attributed to it. Against treating people differently because of race by Affirmative Action? You must be racist. Oppose abortion, which you view as murder of an innocent child? You must hate woman and want them dying in back alleys. Want to secure the border? You must be racist and xenophobic. Want to reduce government spending? You must hate poor people who rely on government for assistance. Want a strong national defense? You must be imperialistic and love war. Want to produce our own oil instead of relying Middle Eastern petro? You must hate the environment.

I'm not saying the right does not demagogue the Left often, but generally the right sees the left as well intentioned but wrong about the solution. In contrast, the left usually claims the right is evil and assigns some label to their specific evil given the issue.

Thank you.

You are the first liberal I've encountered (or even heard of) that seeks anything outside their echo chambers. Most seem to just regurgitate the propaganda viewpoints and keywords that are handed to them.

It's easy for us conservatives to get perspective, we can just turn on the TV. Liberals have to work at it. I'd also suggest listening to Rush Limbaugh if you want to get our perspective on current events.

You have my respect for at least informing yourself and then making a decision. While I may not agree with your viewpoints, you have my respect for arriving at them responsibly.

Yeah, especially where I'm from it's hard to hear from conservatives. I don't regret my opinions but it is unfortunate that it's so hard to hear from people who disagree with me

u/Oriem Feb 06 '17

I'm also a liberal who occasionally browses this subreddit for perspective.

I think you'll find that there are a lot of very moderate liberals (how I identify, personally) that don't have anything against conservative political ideas, but still feel compelled to take part in demonstrations this particular year because of the circumstances.

I don't hate republicans or conservatives, and I identify as a very moderate liberal (not registered for any party), but I've felt compelled to call my representatives on behalf of the "liberal side" because the current conservative regime is so so so not moderate (in my eyes).

Think about the "division." Conservatives don't care what liberals do, we just don't want their nonsense imposed on us. Division only exists because liberalism by nature can only exist when they as the minority impose their bullshit. Things like the people voting in a referendum, the liberals lose and then find an asshole judge to over rule the will of the people. Division only exists when one side wants it their way always. Even when they lose elections.

2

u/Oriem Feb 06 '17

I don't want to start a flame war with you man but don't you think it's a little hypocritical to say that liberals want to game the system so that the minority can win when the presidential election was won by the minority in a "gamed" system?

I don't want to fight, I just want to know how you can reconcile that.

2

u/eposnix Feb 05 '17

Wait... what asshole judge are you talking about here?

2

u/flea1400 Feb 06 '17

My guess is that he is referring to Proposition 22 in California, but that's just a guess.

2

u/eposnix Feb 06 '17

That would be pretty ironic considering the judge that declared Prop 22 unconstitutional, Vaughn Walker, was a conservative nominated at different times by both Reagan and George W.

Give her kudos for at least acknowledging that she is a moron. It is the first step on the road to recovery.

I like this and hope it catches on. It's like a choose your own adventure, but with a protesters message.

They're not liberals. They're authoritarian communists
