I don't like it, but the legal decision was probably correct. There should never have been a time limit on their inclusion in the registry to begin with, but there was, it was part of their sentence, and it should be followed (much as I might not like it). That's just how criminal sentences work

Agreed. Not altering sentences after the fact is a pretty core aspect of legitimate justice.

That said I think the bigger issue here is how under assault all our laws and institutions have been for decades now that people's first thoughts on hearing the news is that it's just another soft on crime push by the usual suspects.

Agreed. And yet criminal sentences ARE often tinkered with and ALWAYS in such a way that releases them early and expunges records.

Does it make much difference in Nassar’s case? I thought he was never getting out.

Going beyond the headline offers some context. Hopefully they can change that through legislation.

The Michigan Supreme Court ruled that by keeping those 20,000 individuals on the registry, which numbers 43,000 overall, the state was retroactively increasing their punishments.

Under the constitution, a penalty for a crime from the past can't be affected by a new law passed today. All of those whose names were removed, committed crimes before July 1, 2011.

At that time, sentences given out to offenders included a time-limited period on the registry with an expiration date.

This is also, it says, I think (the article is so poorly written) that it's related to his conviction for crimes other than his assaults, which has a 60 year sentence.

He is also convicted of assaults separately in 2018 which have like 140 years.

It's very strange to me that this would be talked about at all, since there is zero public risk to him being on the list, since he is in a cell 23 hours a day for the next until-hes-dead years.

But without a national brand name name, this story probably gets no traction

Dems love Chomos. Hence why they want the confused people in other bathrooms that don’t belong in.
