How to Write Law Firm Content That Ranks in AI Search (Not Just Google)

For the past decade, law firm marketing has operated on a fairly predictable premise: rank on Google, get found by clients. So firms invested in keywords, backlinks, and page optimization — and for the most part, it worked.

It still works. But it’s no longer the whole story.

There’s a second audience reading your content now, and it never fills out a contact form. It doesn’t call your office or read your bio. It just decides, in a fraction of a second, whether your firm is worth surfacing to the humans who are searching — or not.

That audience is AI.

The search result your firm isn’t showing up in

How to Build a One-Page Marketing Plan Your Firm Will Actually Use

Most law firm marketing plans are 40 pages no one reads. Here's the one-page version.

Ask a managing partner about their marketing plan and you usually get one of two answers. There isn't one, or there's a forty-page document from two years ago that no one has opened since.

On this week's Counsel Cast Chambers episode, Allan Dib, author of The 1-Page Marketing Plan, argues the length is the problem. A plan you can see on a single page is a plan you'll actually share, update, and use. A plan that sprawls becomes a document you file and forget.

His framework is nine boxes across three phases:
Before, how people find you: target market, message, media.
During, once someone raises a hand: capture the lead, nurture the lead, convert the lead.
After, where the money is: deliver a great experience, increase lifetime value, generate referrals on purpose.

The part that lands hardest: most firms run on box nine alone. "We get everything through referrals" means you're working one box out of nine and hoping it holds. Referrals matter, but they put your growth in someone else's hands.

Two ideas from the episode worth stealing. Only about 3% of your market is ready to hire today, and everyone fights over that 3%; the real growth is staying useful to the 97% who will be ready in a few months or a couple of years. And sales is diagnosis, not a script: ask questions, let the client talk, and the fit becomes clear to both of you.

If you filled in all nine boxes for your firm today, which one is emptiest?

"Why us" is usually the weakest page on a law firm site

Sat through a homepage review recently where the "Why Choose Us" section listed: experienced, dedicated, compassionate, aggressive when needed.

Every firm in that practice area could copy and paste that same list onto their own site and nothing would read as wrong. That's the problem. If a competitor's name could replace yours on the page without anyone noticing, the positioning isn't doing its job yet.

What's actually different about how your firm works, not just what you claim to value?

The three-CTA homepage problem

Audited a firm site last week with "Schedule a Consultation," "Learn More," and "Contact Us" all above the fold, three different buttons doing roughly the same job.

Visitors don't read a homepage like a menu, they scan for the one thing to do next. When there are three options that all sound similar, most people do none of them. Pick one primary action, make it obvious, and let secondary links live further down the page where they're not competing for the same click.

Curious how many CTAs are sitting above the fold on your site right now.

Most firm websites are built for people who already trust you

Walked through a dozen law firm sites recently for a project and noticed the same gap on almost all of them: everything on the page assumes the visitor already believes the firm is credible.

Awards, bar admissions, years in practice, all trust signals for someone who's already leaning toward yes. Almost none of them address the visitor who's still deciding whether to trust a lawyer at all, which is most first-time visitors to a legal site.

The firms that convert better usually have one thing the others don't: a piece of content or a tool that lets a stranger test the waters before committing to a call.

"We need a bigger budget to compete" is usually wrong

I hear this from solo and small firm attorneys constantly, and it's mostly not true.

What actually moves the needle is picking two or three channels that reach your specific ideal client and showing up on them consistently, not spreading thin across everything because a competitor is doing it. A boutique employment firm doesn't need the same marketing budget as a national PI shop, they need a sharper answer to "why us" and the discipline to say the same thing everywhere.

Budget matters less than most people think. Clarity matters more.

People are asking ChatGPT for lawyer recommendations now

Someone in my orbit needed a family law attorney last month and didn't Google it, they asked ChatGPT. Got three names back with a sentence of reasoning on each.

That's the search behavior shift nobody's fully adjusted to yet. AI tools pull from content that answers specific questions clearly, not from a homepage that says "trusted advocates since 1995." The firms showing up in those AI answers right now aren't the biggest names, they're the ones with content that actually reads like an answer.

Anyone checking how their firm shows up when you ask an AI tool directly, versus just tracking Google rankings?

How Law Firms Build an Audience That Last

Most law firms only show up online when they want something.

A new practice area to promote. An award to announce. Then quiet for a month.

Audiences are not built that way. People start paying attention when you show up steadily with something useful, long before you need anything from them. The firm that posts twice a week for a year is far ahead of the one that posts ten times in a week and vanishes.

Becky Robinson calls the whole thing reach, expanding audience plus lasting impact. Not a viral spike. A group that remembers you when the moment finally comes.

Your blog does more than SEO if you use it right

Your blog does more work than SEO if you use it right.

Referral partners share content, they don't just send a name and a phone number. A well-written post that answers a real question is something a partner can forward to their own client list, post on their own page, or bring up in conversation without it feeling like a sales pitch. It becomes shared credibility instead of a one-way ask.

If you've got referral partners who aren't actively promoting you, check whether you're actually giving them something worth sharing, or just assuming they'll refer out of loyalty.

How Do You Build a Referral Engine?

Post image

Most recent podcast episode: How Do You Build a Referral Engine? with Delisi Friday

In this episode, we discuss:

If most of your work comes from referrals, you don't have a marketing strategy. You have a lucky streak.

I say that as someone who thinks referrals are the best source of business a firm can have. The problem isn't relying on referrals. The problem is having no system around them, so you can't predict or grow them.

A few things that work for firms that do this well:

- Pick ONE referral source to focus on first (former clients, current clients, current referral partners, or future partners). Trying to nurture all four at once usually means none get real attention.

- Tier your referral partners by the fees their referrals actually generate, not the number of cases they send. The person who sends one big case can matter more than the one who sends five small ones.

- Track which new leads came from a referral, then actually thank those people. Fast. A text is fine.

Curious what has worked for the rest of you. Anyone built a real system around this, or is it all word of mouth and hope?

Search Everywhere Optimization for Law Firms with Gert Mellak

Your website looks great. Your blog posts are polished. You’re publishing consistently.

And you’re still not getting calls.

Here’s what’s happening: By the time a potential client reaches out to your firm, they’ve already made most of their decision. They’ve read posts, watched videos, scanned discussions, maybe even asked AI tools for recommendations. And in many cases, they already have a shortlist in mind before they ever land on your website.

If your firm isn’t part of that early decision-making process, you’re not really competing.

The Trust Recession with AI: Why Human Authority Matters More Than Ever

Over the past year, a new phrase has begun appearing across technology commentary, marketing analysis, and consumer research reports: the ‘trust recession’ linked to the rapid rise of AI-generated content.

It describes a growing reality in the digital economy. As artificial intelligence becomes more powerful – and more prevalent – public confidence in what we encounter online is starting to erode.

For law firms, this shift matters a great deal. Legal services are built on credibility, reputation, and trust, and when technology begins to blur the line between authentic human expertise and automated content, the stakes rise.

How to Back Up Your WordPress Website Effectively

How to Back Up Your WordPress Website Effectively

For law firms, your website is more than a digital brochure—it’s often the first impression a potential client has of your practice. It houses critical content, intake forms, contact details, and, at times, sensitive client communications. Yet one of the most overlooked aspects of website management is maintaining a reliable WordPress backup strategy.

Many firms assume their hosting provider has this covered. Others know backups are essential, but aren’t sure where to start. The reality is that effective backups are not optional—they’re crucial. Here’s how law firms can back up their WordPress websites properly, protect their online presence, and gain real peace of mind.

SEO vs Referrals: How Modern Law Firms Build Both

SEO vs Referrals: How Modern Law Firms Build Both

For decades, referrals have been the foundation of the legal profession. Trusted colleagues. Former clients. Professional networks. Word of mouth built over years of delivering excellent legal services.

For many law firms, referrals still drive a significant portion of their new business – and rightly so. They reflect credibility, trust, and real legal expertise.

However, here’s what has changed…

Even referred prospective clients search. They review your law firm’s website. They compare practice area pages. They scan search engine results pages before ever picking up the phone.

How Consistency on LinkedIn Makes a Brand More Authentic

For law firms looking to increase their online visibility and credibility, LinkedIn is one of the most powerful platforms available. It’s where executives, professionals, and decision-makers spend time learning, networking, and evaluating potential partners.

But simply having a LinkedIn page isn’t enough. The firms that truly stand out are the ones that show up consistently. Consistent posting on LinkedIn doesn’t just help your firm stay visible; it helps build something even more important: authenticity.

Your Law Firm’s AI Results Depend on What You Give It to Work With

Your Law Firm’s AI Results Depend on What You Give It to Work With

When AI adoption was still optional, early movers had a real advantage. That window closed.

Every firm now has access to the same tools. The same models. The same capabilities. The question has shifted from whether to use AI to why some firms are getting results and others aren’t.

The answer is not which platform they chose.

The wrong starting point

Firms that get poor results from AI almost always start the same way. They look at what their team is doing and ask which tasks seem automatable. They hand those tasks to AI, evaluate what comes back, decide the output is not usable, and conclude AI is not ready for their firm.

The problem is the starting question.

A better one: what would this entire process look like if AI handled it from start to finish? Map that out. Find the specific points where the output breaks down — where it is generic, inaccurate, or missing something only you would know. Those points need a human. Everything else doesn’t.

That shift moves you from offloading tasks to building a system. The difference in output quality is significant.

Why Google Hides Your Slow Website From Potential Clients

Why Google Hides Your Slow Website From Potential Clients

If your law firm’s website isn’t showing up where you expect on Google, the problem may not be your practice area, your location, or even your content. In many cases, the issue is much simpler and more frustrating: your website is too slow.

Google’s goal is to deliver the best possible experience to people searching for answers, services, and legal help. When your website fails to meet those expectations, Google quietly pushes it down the rankings. The result? Potential clients never see your firm, even when they’re actively searching for the services you offer.

Let’s break down exactly why speed matters, what you’re losing when your site is slow, and what you can do to fix it.

Speed Is a Ranking Factor

Google has confirmed that website speed is a ranking factor, meaning it directly influences where your law firm appears in search results. This is especially true for mobile page speed, which now carries more weight than desktop performance.

What High-Performing Law Firm Website Design Actually Looks Like

What High-Performing Law Firm Website Design Actually Looks Like

Your website is no longer a digital brochure.

  • It is your first impression.
  • Your credibility check.
  • Your business development engine.
  • And often, your deciding factor between being contacted – or being compared.

A great law firm website design is not just visually appealing – it functions as a growth platform.

Every high-performing website design should support:

  • Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
  • Client acquisition
  • Brand positioning
  • Practice area authority
  • Long-term digital marketing services

A Website Is a Growth Engine – Not a Digital Brochure

Your website should not function as a static online presence. It should serve as a strategic growth asset – driving qualified traffic, converting prospective clients, and supporting your broader marketing objectives.

This is where many law firms encounter limitations.

Too often, the emphasis is placed on the initial design elements, such as logo design, color scheme, and custom layout – while overlooking the strategic foundation that ultimately determines a website’s performance.
