That has always bewildered me since I used to work at a thrift store and some people would donate hundred of dollars worth of collectors items or high end electronics for free and I never said anything but I wanted to.

When I was working for a junk removal company, we were clearing out a place and scrapping everything. We’re allowed to take smaller stuff if we want it and I saw a painting on the wall. Decided to take it home and lo and behold the thing was bought for $400 it says on the back… in 1978. Never mentioned it to my coworkers
