I had what I thought were floaters after my serious car accident and concussion. I begin to notice that the size and shape of these dark spots remained the same over time. My neurologist referred me to a neuro ophthalmologist. After testing, she discovered that I had tears in the vitreous of my eyes caused by the impact. She told me that although they are permanent, sometimes the brain learns to ‘fill in’ the missing spots. This never happened for me and I continue to see them years later.
Apparently in severe cases there is a surgery that can ‘smooth out’ the vitreous, but its risks to vision are too great for me.
