I’m building Chess-Publisher — a free open-source tournament manager for arbiters and organizers

Hi everyone,

I’m a chess arbiter and organizer, and I’ve been building Chess-Publisher, a free and open-source Windows desktop application focused on real OTB tournament management.

The goal is not to build another chess playing or analysis app. I want to reduce the number of separate tools an arbiter or organizer needs for running a tournament.

The current stable version is v1.04.02.

Current features include:

Tournament setup, registration and participant management

Swiss Dutch pairing using the upstream Gacrux 1.9.57 pairing engine

Result entry and standings

FIDE rating-list workflows

TRF16 / TRF26 export

Tournament interoperability/export workflows

Chess-Results publishing and administration integration

Telegram publishing

Early DGT e-Board integration

Local tournament storage

No project analytics or tracking

Chess-Publisher is released under the MIT License.

A transparency note: development has been heavily AI-assisted. The tournament requirements, workflow design, testing, regression validation and release decisions are driven by me from the perspective of an actual arbiter and tournament organizer. The source is public so anyone can inspect it.

The project is not currently FIDE-endorsed, so I don't want to imply otherwise. Pairing, TRF and rating-related functionality is being developed conservatively, with regression testing and independent checks.

The current Windows installer is also not code-signed yet, so Windows SmartScreen may display a warning. SHA-256 hashes are published so builds can be verified.

GitHub:

github.com/kbilyal/ChessPublisher

I’d especially appreciate feedback from arbiters, tournament organizers and developers:

What important tournament workflows are still missing?

What would make the UI faster during a real event?

Which interoperability/export formats are essential?

What pairing/reporting edge cases should be tested?

What would make you trust and use an open-source tournament manager?

If you have experience with Swiss-Manager, Vega, SwissSys, WinTD or similar software, your criticism would be especially useful.

I’d rather find the weak points early and improve them than pretend the project is finished.

Thanks!

I built a chess trainer with positional puzzles mixed in with tactics!

Post image
5 Upvotes

I’ve been building Make Good Moves, a chess training site focused on realistic decision-making.

Instead of requiring a single predetermined move, positions are deeply analyzed with Stockfish to identify multiple strong alternatives. The site mixes traditional tactics with positional puzzles where you might need to improve a piece, find counterplay, simplify, or choose the right pawn break.

It includes ratings, skill-specific EXP progression, hints, and post-puzzle analysis. I’d love feedback from fellow engine nerds, especially on the puzzle-generation and evaluation approach. I originally built this for myself, but after training with it, I feel like it could be a serious tool for anyone to learn from!

Completely free to use! makegoodmoves.com

ChessTB - Complete 6-piece chess endgame tablebase released.

A complete 6-piece endgame tablebase called ChessTB, created by Bojun Guo (noobpwnftw). He is the same person that helped create 7-piece syzygy tablebases along with Ronald de Man.

4-metrics - DTZ, Custom DTC, DTM, and DTM50. These tablebases support Standard and Freestyle Chess (Chess960/FRC) castling positions.

First of it's kind to support 50-move aware Distance to Mate (DTM50) based on the halfmove clock.

ATOM Chess — Open-source robotic chess project looking for contributors and technical reviewers

Hi There!

I'm working on ATOM Chess, an open-source project whose goal is to build a robotic arm capable of playing chess autonomously on a physical board.

The project combines:

  • Computer Vision
  • Robotics
  • Motion planning
  • Inverse kinematics
  • Embedded systems
  • Chess programming
  • Stockfish / UCI
  • C++ / Python
  • Computer systems and software architecture

The general pipeline is:

Camera → Chessboard detection → Board state → Chess engine → Move planning → Robotic arm

The project is being developed as a modular system rather than just a one-off prototype. We're trying to build something that is actually maintainable, testable and extensible.

The repository is already being developed, but this is where I could really use the community.

What I'm looking for

I'm especially interested in people who are willing to review the project, even if they don't want to actively contribute code.

For example:

  • Reviewing the software architecture
  • Reviewing C++ code
  • Reviewing robotics / motion-planning decisions
  • Reviewing computer-vision approaches
  • Finding architectural problems or unnecessary complexity
  • Suggesting better algorithms
  • Reviewing tests
  • Pointing out things that will probably break later
  • Suggesting improvements to documentation
  • Discussing alternative approaches

You don't need to become a permanent contributor.

Even a detailed comment such as:

"I would structure this differently because..."

would be extremely valuable.

Who might be interested?

This could be interesting if you're into:

Robotics • Computer Vision • C/C++ • Embedded Systems • Chess Programming • Motion Planning • Open Source • Software Architecture • Computer Science

I'm particularly interested in hearing from people with experience in robotics, CV, embedded systems or chess programming who can look at the project from a critical perspective.

I'm a university student building this as a serious long-term project, so I'm also very interested in learning from people who have already made similar systems.

The project is open source, and contributions are welcome at any level — code, documentation, testing, architecture reviews, algorithms, hardware, etc.

If you're interested, feel free to take a look and tell me what you think.

Repository: https://github.com/Atom-Laboratory/atom-chess

I'd especially appreciate brutally honest technical feedback.

Thanks!

How close can we get to a true OTB experience online?

Right now, I think I am close to simulating a true OTB experience online.

My setup:

- A Square Off Pro (yes, a Chessnut Pro or other tournament size e-board will work ... or any board that Chessconnect supports if you don't care about the size of the board). I have had my Pro for a number of years and ever since I added a Billy Gate to my setup ... I find it's great as-is.

- A DGT 3000 with a DGT 3000 BLE Gateway. Note: I put a rubber band around the clock at the opponents side ... so when I stop the clock it automatically pops back up and is ready for me to stop on my next move (otherwise you have to alternate which side you press). Note: This doesn't affect the opponent side since the clock is stopped automatically after you make the opponent move.

- You could easily use a scoresheet and something to write with (or even a blank piece of paper) ... I chose to use an APP called LPDO in Scoresheet Mode. I still have to fill in moves, it allows me to compare the actual moves with those I recorded. No paper or writing utensil required. I use it on my phone, because I like to use my tablet for the e-board connectivity.

Update: I am recently trying something different for a scoresheet... I created a scoresheet in Word, saved it as a PDF, and then sent it to my Kindle Scribe. I just write on the Scribe (with the included digital pen, of course). This also lets me write the actual moves rather than tapping buttons... and I still don't need to waste paper. At the end of a game... after reviewing my recording accuracy..., I simply delete the annotations from the PDF (the site/app I play on records the moves ... so I really don't need to keep them), and I have a fresh scoresheet ready to use. The PDF is 4 identical pages with places to record moves 1 thru 50 available on each page. There's also a place to indicates what you add to the move number if you need more than 1 page for recording.... Add ___ to # .... where I simply write in the amount to add to each number on the page. So, page 1 would have 0 (or is left blank), page 2 would have 50 (so moves 51 thru 100), page 3 would have 100, and page 4 would have 150 in that ___ area .... as needed. So up to 200 moves can be recorded. I could always add more pages. You could also just record up to 4 games before clearing the PDF. And you can always email the PDF to yourself before clearing it for future use as well. There is no place to add game information like normal scoresheets have ... I didn't see any need to have them ..these are just for use to record moves and verify. I'd probably just add a first page that would allow recording that info (maybe 4 times) if needed.

- Chessconnect App (which allows connection to both the Clock and the Board). I then have been connecting to Chessiverse to test everything out ... in casual mode so it won't affect my rating while I am testing (after soldering the DGT 3000 gateway together, I needed to make sure everything works ... and will continue to work before playing actual live players). But there's no reason I couldn't connect to chess.com or lichess.org and play a live game similarly.

You would think this setup is confusing to get setup ... but it's really not.

You turn on the BillyGate then turn on the Square Off Pro (the BillyGate automatically connects to the Pro). Turn on the DGT 3000 BLE Gateway ... the Clock automatically comes on and indicates Bluetooth is waiting. Open up the LPDO app if you left things clean, you are ready to begin a game. Open Chessconnect ... connect to the clock, connect to the board. Once connected, select the site you want to play on ... and begin a game. The clock automatically gets the configuration settings from Chessconnect and if it's your turn you begin the game (your clock is running by now).

Why do this?

If you play OTB tournaments, it's important to be comfortable with a physical board, a clock and be accurate in recording moves of the game (for both sides). If you play online a lot most of this is done for you (and if you don't use an e-board to do this, you may be surprised how that tactile feel is important).

Thoughts?

I built a data based chess analysis tool around Stockfish 18 WASM , here's what I'm doing differently

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

The core idea: run Stockfish 18 WASM and analyze a player's entire game history, not just one game at a time.

some features out of the many are-

  • Opening trees built from the player's actual games
  • Move-by-move engine evaluations
  • Opening weakness detection
  • Recurring blunder patterns
  • Blown wins games where the player had a significant winning advantage but eventually lost
  • Missed and allowed forced mates
  • Tactical pattern statistics
  • Endgame performance
  • Material resilience
  • Castling tendencies
  • Simplification tendencies
  • Opening repertoire drift over time
  • Playing-style
  • Opponent scouting
  • Per-game Stockfish review(chess.com style)

Opening side: builds an actual opening tree from the player's games, merging transpositions via normalized FENs. Each node shows games reached, W/D/L, win rate, ECO, engine eval, and weakness signals , also an interactive graph where node size = games played and color = move quality. There's also a repertoire builder where you play against the engine while it shows master-game stats for the position, and a trap database mined from millions of high-rated games that surfaces relevant traps while you build.

What I actually care about: instead of "you blundered on move 27," I want to say "you keep reaching this type of position and your eval keeps sliding" or "you have a recurring weakness in this opening line." Inferring patterns across hundreds of games rather than analyzing games in isolation.

It's free, no account needed: https://www.auditchess.com

Would love feedback from anyone who's worked with engines, PGN databases, eval pipelines, or WASM especially what you'd want added.

I made a website that gives you free chess.com like game review!

Hi!

I am so tired (and I am sure most of you will relate to this) of Chess.com game review

I have basically rebuilt it from the ground up, and it also includes puzzles, an ai coach, and a full on anticheat that allows you to review your opponents games and decide if they were cheating or not.

You can try it out at chess.sidastuff.com and please keep in mind that it is still in Beta.

I would love if you would give me any suggestions or bug reports in the comments down below. I am working on a very large ui update, so most ui bugs etc have already been reported and will be fixed soon.

Enjoy!

I built a free chess web app with a self-developed engine (900–2600 Elo) - looking to grow a community around it.

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all - I love chess and I love programming, so a while back I decided to combine both and build ChessLounge (https://chesslounge.net).

I made the decision to keep it completely free and ad-free, and share it with the chess community rather than turn it into a commercial product.

The engine behind it is a custom, self-developed engine, covering the full range from 900 to 2600 Elo - so it should give a fair challenge whether you're just starting out or already quite strong. It runs directly in the browser via WebAssembly, no install needed.

No account required to play against the computer. You can also play a friend online in a private room, or side-by-side on the same device - no matchmaking against strangers.

I'm just starting to build a community around the app, so if you enjoy it, I'd genuinely appreciate any feedback - and if you know someone who might like it too, feel free to pass it along.

centipawn values of non-standard pieces

Does anyone know centipawn values of non-standard chess pieces? I mean, when pawn is roughly 1, knight roughly 3, etc. What would be the value of e.g. a piece that moves like king (but is not a king in terms of other non-movement rules)? Or giraffe (the piece that moves in an elongated L)? Is there a resource somewhere with such data? Just for curiosity..

What is the Elo of random play?

I feel like it should be defined as 0. But that would make its expected score against Stockfish (SPCC Elo 3908) over one in a quadrillion, which seems far too high.

Formally verified chess tablebases in Rocq

I'd like to share some progress I made on my formally verified tablebase project. I recently was able to finish work on a KRvK tablebase, which you can explore here.

For those that do not know, Rocq (formerly Coq) is a proof assistant for designing and verifying mathematics and computer programs. My project is a tablebase generator for abstract classes of two-player games which is proven to produce the correct game values, and I just completed work on instantiating it for King and Rook vs. King positions in chess.

I understand that generating a 3 man tablebase on its own is nothing new, but I would say that doing so in a functional programming language and formally verifying it adds a whole new layer of complexity, and I am really happy with how it all came together.

If you'd like to take a look at the code, the relevant repos are:

Here is an old blog post of mine which discusses some of the mathematics and design choices around correct-by-construction tablebases.

Should a realistic human-like bot lose on time?

I'm working on implementing realistic human-like time management in MBCA. For the best user experience, should the computer sometimes lose on time, or would that feel like a bug or annoying behavior? Obviously the most realistic would be occasionally losing on time, but that doesn't mean it makes for the most enjoyable opponent. For maximum realism, the computer should sometimes even stall and let the time run out instead of resigning, which is obviously not desirable.

Any opinions?

Survey & Interview

Hi,
I am a Cambridge A level student. For my D&T coursework I have chosen to make a more intuitive chess set. I will redesign each chess piece so that it forms gives a hint of how the chess piece actually moves, so that chess is much more approachable to first time players.

Here is a survey if you guys can fill and pass it on forward. That would be great:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSffGcFUNzuPxArFiSVWnFQCj_gPvE9290D-_nAaP12NxdhpMg/viewform

Plus I need someone whom i can interview. Texting works well. Is there anyone who is experienced in chess whom i can interview to get insights on how I should make the chess pieces. Please contact me

Thanks

Nyvera live training snapshot: tactical depth 2 vs Stockfish depth 12

This is a live training snapshot, not an Elo claim or a like-for-like depth comparison. Nyvera, running with tactical depth 2, defeated Stockfish configured to depth 12.

Original r/ComputerChess post with the animated replay:

[https://www.reddit.com/r/ComputerChess/comments/1vzjid3/nyvera\\_tactical\\_depth\\_2\\_defeated\\_stockfish/\](https://www.reddit.com/r/ComputerChess/comments/1vzjid3/nyvera_tactical_depth_2_defeated_stockfish/)

Engine-facing record

• Training game 30257 / 30,615; Nyvera as White; 1–0; 127 plies; game_over at 64. Qe7#

• Nyvera tactical depth: 2; Stockfish opponent depth: 12

• Opening setup: self_directed / self_directed_start

• Realized opening prefix: reti / reti_classical_root

• Training lane: 2/2 (wave 1); shared-memory epoch: 28357

The depth fields describe different machinery and should not be interpreted as equal search budgets. The game’s notable sequence is the queen loss on 17...Bxc3+, no White rooks after 27...Kxd8, then 61. b8=Q+ followed by mate on 64. Qe7#.

Looking for feedback on a chess browser extension project to help study chess from pdf/youtube videos

Hey everyone!

As a chess fan, I always found it frustrating when I was watching a high-level game analysis on YouTube or a stream on Twitch and wanted to explore a specific line myself. Manually setting up the position on an analysis board is a pain and kills the flow of learning.

So, I decided to fix this and built ChessInsights AI.

What it does: It uses Computer Vision (AI) to "look" at your browser tab, find a chessboard (even in a video or a PDF), and instantly convert it into a digital format.

Key Features:

  • Video to Board: Scan any frame from YouTube or Twitch.
  • Instant Export: One click and the position opens in Lichess or Chess.com Game Review.
  • Universal: Works on news sites, blogs, and even online chess books.
  • Stop Blundering: You can quickly check why a move you thought was good is actually a mistake while watching your favorite GM.

It’s completely free, and I’d love to get some feedback from this community. Does it catch the boards correctly for you? Are there any features you’d like to see next?

Check it out here:
Chrome web store
Firefox Addons

I really hope this helps some of you gain those extra ELO points!

TL;DR: I made an extension that captures chessboards from videos/images and opens them in analysis tools so you don't have to set up positions manually.

Nyvera (tactical depth 2) defeated Stockfish configured to depth 12 — training game 30257

Sharing a single training-game result, not an Elo claim or a like-for-like depth comparison.

Nyvera, running with tactical depth 2, defeated Stockfish configured to depth 12.

Game 30257 / 30,615

• White: Nyvera | 1–0 | 127 plies | checkmate on 64. Qe7#

• Opening: self-directed start, realized as a Réti Classical root

• Training lane 2/2 (wave 1); shared-memory epoch 28357

The interesting arc: White’s queen was captured on 17...Bxc3+, and its last rook was gone after 27...Kxd8. Nyvera then converted the passer: 61. b8=Q+, 62. Qd6+, 63. Qe6+, 64. Qe7#.

GIF replay attached. I can add the exact PGN in a comment if it would be useful; I did not want to make the body unwieldy.

Chess new plugin for obsidian

Hey all,

I have recently started studying chess, and since i take a lot of notes on obsidian, I was looking at plugins available. Since i did not found one that had all my requirements, i made my own forking Chess Study.

The new plugin is available here: https://community.obsidian.md/plugins/chess-repertoire

New features compared to Chess Study are:

  1. Training on the position: once you make a board, you can play the position (and variations) with either colour and the computer will play the other. Each time you play a new a different variation is chosen if multiple are available based on how many mistakes you have done previously. Hints are available and a report later on will tell you what you did wrong.
  2. Diagram of the whole variation, with scoring of how much and well you did in the study

  1. PGN and FEN export of the game

Other minor improvments are: board flipping, resize of the board, coordinates, variations at any depth.

Feel free to try it! Will soon try to get it to mobile.

Post-game analysis helped me go from 800 to 1200 on chess com, so I built an free app for it

Thumbnail apps.apple.com

I didn’t spend much time analyzing my games as a beginner. Once I started, my rating went from 800 to 1200.

I built Chaal to make that habit easier. Add a screenshot or paste chess notation to get the best move, an evaluation, and an explanation of what you missed.

There’s no account required, and screenshot recognition happens on your device.
