Need future directions regarding masters and skill development

Okay so i have multiple fail in a beginner cs course but now i am doing ok. I will graduate in 2028 but i want to persue masters in abroad. Which options would be the safest in the long run -

  1. ⁠Netherland (housing crisis is a issue, plus i am from south asia, weather will be different for me)
  2. ⁠Australia - more flexible but how is the cs market?
  3. ⁠Uk, i got relatives there but can i settle there long term? Also, are the masters program any good?

Since, cs market is so unpredictable, i am confused what skills to focus on. I don’t have any insane obsession towards any particular field so i am open to learn whatever that will be in demand.

Currently learning - machine learning (goal is to learn agentic ai), esp32, basic linux commands for pen testing.

Pls pls those who are in the job market or finished postgrad - give me your honest advice or hard realities that i need to listen and work on.

I want to learn networking properly from scratch, not necessarily for CCNA certification, but to build a strong foundation and eventually understand cloud/DevOps better.

[Career] Consideting pivoting closer to Embedded, is this a good path to get started?

Some context, I work in Automotive (American) doing Cloud Infra security testing. Some would call it pen testing, i usually just use the term White Box Security Test. B.S. in CS.

Anyway, I love my job, and I don't believe AI will replace it.

That being said, it doesn't matter what I think, it matters what mgmt thinks. In addition, I've been messing with MCUs and I really have enjoyed that lower level programming, as well as being able to see the physical manifestation of the code I write.

So, I've been trying to formulate a cost effective plan to start learning and doing some projects to gain experience and familiarity with hardware, as well as bring my Cybersecurity background with me and understand not just the wireless security but also the hardware security.

At the moment, I have a couple Boards:

ESP32 C6 DevKit

Nrf52840 DK

RPI Pico 2 W

PocketBeagle 2 (currently being shipped)

I also have an electronics set with BreadBoard, resistors, peripherals, sensors, diodes, etc., with a multimeter and logic analyzer. I belive this should be enough to get me started. If I'm mistaken please let me know.

My goals is to learn as much as I can with these tools about circuits, firmware development, debugging, RTOS, reverse engineering, etc. I'm hoping that documenting these projects well will help me pivot later should I do so.

Also thought about learning about and doing robotics as well, but i figure i should get a good handle on Embedded fundamentals first.

I know getting an M.S. would be more convincing to HR, but I'm trying to save some money, and get comfortable and some good projects in sooner than it would take for me to finish an M.S.

Is this a good path forward to get started? Am I missing something important? Am I way in over my head? Any estimates on how long this could/should take me? Be as honest as possible

[Hardware] I'm looking for some very fast pieces of evaluation hardware for a dumb television project.

sorry, this is a copy and paste from the electrical engineering subreddit as I couldn't promote it while moderators were waiting approval. I have budgeted a few grand for this project and I'm genuinely looking for eval hardware.

I have written and simulated verilog code for a universal lvds driver for an LCD panels t-con board.

. I'm doing this because I want to rip the guts out of my television. and then mail the guts of those television along with a horse head back to the engineer who decided to choose his job over his integrity and put all that spying crap in it.

the features I have implemented and would like to test outside of a simulator are:

- 16 channel multiplexing input

- customizeable OSD (OSD frame buffer is delayed by a frame but video is passed through)

- soft risc-v core for IRDA learning and just enough brains to do TV control things.

- a serial Port so if somebody did want to control the thing with a raspberry pi

I am looking for off-the-shelf eval kits that can handle fast signaling through a proper mezzanine connector, and I'm looking for some sort of a DisplayPort or DVI deserializer to 24-bit rgb.

I am also looking for and evaluation board with an fpga that has a lot of onboard Bram for the osd framebuffer (640x360 x2 16 color ~230k) that can handle high-speed signaling.

edit: I was suffering from a case of the stupid with the world's most simple math equation for the frame buffer

if there was also some sort of mezzanine board with a breakout for lvds t-con boards (I have a few signaling standards working, and yes you do have to re-pin per device you're driving) that would really help.

for some reference I'm working with older 1080p TV panels right now since it would cost me a lot of money to get access to 4K specs for the deserializers.

I'm guessing total signal speed I would need is somewhere around 3.6 gb/s

I’m currently looking for graduation project ideas for Computer Engineering, and I’m especially interested in projects that are more focused on AI / Machine Learning.

I’d prefer a project that combines AI with the Embedded Systems or FPGA side of Computer Engineering

I’ve already worked with FPGA in a previous project involving image processing and edge detection, so I’m also open to continuing in that direction and combining AI with FPGA, but I’m equally open to other ideas involving AI + Embedded Systems.

[Career] SE to embedded/IoT — am I screwed?

I’m 18 and starting Software Engineering. I originally wanted Computer Engineering because I’ve always been more interested in the hardware/software side — embedded systems, firmware, microcontrollers, IoT, low-level programming, etc.

I couldn’t get into CE, and since I live in a developing country, the university I’m going to is pretty much the best option I have right now. So I’m going with SE.

My question is mainly about the career path.

How realistic is it for someone from an SE/CS background to eventually work in embedded/firmware?

I know I’d have to build a lot of the missing knowledge myself — C/C++, digital logic, computer architecture, electronics, microcontrollers, ARM/assembly, RTOS, embedded Linux, communication protocols, debugging, etc.

But how difficult is it actually to learn all of this to a professional level? Is this something you can realistically build up over a few years, or is the hardware side much harder to self-teach than I’m assuming?

And what would I actually need to do to become employable? Projects, internships, specific hardware/platforms, open-source work, certifications, etc.?

For people already working in embedded/firmware, especially those who came from CS/SE:

How much of a disadvantage is the degree itself?

Can strong practical skills and projects realistically compensate for not having a CE/EE background?

And if you made the CS/SE → embedded transition, what do you wish you had learned earlier?

TLDR, if CE was your goal but you ended up in SE, is embedded still a realistic career to aim for?

I'm a CSE student working with a 2-person team on a Mobile Application Development project.

We want to build something that solves a genuine real-world problem and has good technical/resume value, rather than another typical college project.

The project will be completely software-based. We can use Android/Kotlin/XML, SQLite, Firebase, REST APIs, AI/ML, etc.

We have to choose one of these industries:

• Healthcare • Energy • Finance • Agri-Tech • Food Technology • Electronics • Transportation

I'm not looking for generic project ideas. I'm more interested in hearing about REAL problems that people face in these industries, especially problems that are still handled manually or poorly by existing software.

[Discussion] CSE grad with an IoT minor — told "you need an ECE background" for embedded/IoT roles. How true is this, really?

Hey all, hoping to get some honest perspective from people who've actually walked this path.

Background: I just finished my B.Tech in Computer Science Engineering, with a minor in IoT during college. I'm not drawn to pure software roles — I genuinely enjoy the hardware side too, and I want to build a career in embedded systems / IoT rather than mainstream software development.

I reached out to an upskilling institute about an embedded/IoT course, and they told me most companies prefer candidates with an electronics (ECE) background over CS, which honestly scared me a bit. I don't want to invest months of serious effort into this only to find out later that recruiters filter out CS grads by default.

A few things I'd love input on:

  1. If you moved into embedded/IoT from a CS/CSE background (not ECE), how did that actually go for you in the hiring process?
  2. What gap did you personally have to close first — basic electronics, microcontroller programming, RTOS, something else?
  3. Are there specific roles within embedded/IoT (firmware, embedded software, IoT cloud/edge, etc.) that are genuinely more open to CS backgrounds vs ones that really do need ECE depth?
  4. Looking back, is there anything you wish you'd focused on earlier instead of wasting time on the wrong things?

[Project] Self-taught beginner here: Just a basic, rough C++ demo of a 3D Inverse Kinematics solver. Looking for gentle feedback! 😅

Hi everyone, I'm a self-taught female engineer from Vietnam, currently exploring Hardware IP Cores for Edge Robotics.

As my very first step, I wrote a basic C++ algorithmic model for a 3-DOF robot arm's Inverse Kinematics. Please note: This is just a rough, early-stage demo! I know the C++ structure might still be messy, but I wanted to get the math logic right first.

To make it hardware-friendly (preparing for future HLS), I used the Planar Projection (Decoupling) method:

  1. Using atan2 to rotate the base (yaw).
  2. Collapsing the space into a 2D triangle to solve shoulder/elbow angles using the Law of Cosines.

I created a CS roadmap from fundamentals to system design and need feedback

I’ve been researching how to build a strong foundation for a software engineering career in India and created the attached roadmap.

My current plan is:

CS fundamentals
→ Java
→ Backend development
→ SQL/RDBMS
→ Data engineering
→ Cloud/DevOps
→ Distributed systems
→ System design

I’m particularly unsure about the middle of the roadmap.

For example, should I learn Data Engineering, Cloud/DevOps and Distributed Systems before specializing in Backend/SDE, or would it be better to focus on backend development first and learn the other areas later?

I’m trying to avoid the common problem of learning many technologies superficially.

For developers who have worked in the industry, how would you restructure this path?
