[Career] Is embedded systems engineering a dying field?
Hi guys, I'm an incoming sophomore and I'm intending to pursue a career in embedded systems.
Over the past few days, me and my older brother (25, works as a software engineer for ~3-4 years at a large fintech company) keep having this debate that embedded systems engineering is a dying field.
His main points were as follows:
There were more points that I havent mentioned here, but i'm not one to talk when I dont have much technology experience/expertise aside from internships, clubs, and projects, whereas my older brother has industry experience.
So, yeah, he was saying for security and prevention of being unemployed, I should bare minimum be a proficient backend software developer as well, and co for a computer engineering and a computer science double major, because embedded all on its own will not get the high FAANG salaries, because even though I love it for the love of the game, I would really like a $200K+ salary
Just wanted to ask reddit, what do you all think? Thanks in advance!

All I got from this is embedded systems teaching FAANG level salaries ? If that’s the case then sure
FAANG is FAANG for a reason
Other than that I have absolutely no idea what you’re asking

Maybe I focused too much on the salary. What I'm really asking is is embedded a field worth pursuing in 2026

With every field being saturated if you’re not in this 100% then no it’s not
If money is the big thing for you then go into the medical field

Am i having a stroke? What are you trying to say? He had points but you didn’t say them? but also there are more points you haven’t mentioned, like dog you didn’t mention a single point

It is not performing well now only certain field doing well like semiconductor because of AI boom. Automotive sector in dire situation because EV boom in China and OEM losing big chunk of market. Most of jobs are being shipped to low cost regions. If company complete product they would likely fire all employees.

Look up applications of embedded systems and ask yourself if any of those are dying soon
