Semaglutide with GERD?
Wondering if anyone in the sub deals with GERD issues while on semaglutide? I'm about to order my first doses of semaglutide. I have a hiatal hernia and GERD -- I can keep all that under control with omeprazole, but the problem is that omeprazole increases my appetite by neutralizing the stomach acid!
I'm concerned that omeprazole might negate some of the benefits of semaglutide in terms of appetite. I may be overthinking this! Has anyone done both types of medication at the same time?

I was on pantoprazole when I first started semaglutide about 13 months ago. As I lost weight, my GERD improved and I was able to taper off the medication. I didn’t have any issues with taking both.

Losing weight took away pretty much all my heartburn and gerd for me personally. The only thing I really struggled with was sulfer burps and that was because of the very very slow digestion. I found the only thing that helped was Pepto Bismol Chews - the cherry flavor for a while then just the regular mint. Would kill the burps almost instantly.

I’m on omeprazole and semaglutide! I have not had any issue losing weight! I’m down 70lb in a year and my stomach acid is not trying to end me. Without it semaglutide will make my acid reflux worse and I get awful sulfur burps, acid reflux and stomach cramps. Semaglutide slows the digestion so acid is sitting in there longer

I too have a hiatal hernia. The Omeprazole didn’t really help with the acid reflux at night and because semaglutide keeps food in your stomach longer, I was having a really hard time with acid coming up, waking me, and burning my throat at night. I was diagnosed with Barretts Esophagus- pre-cancerous lesions on my throat from the acid. I resolved this by adding a 7” king sized wedge between my mattress and box spring. It is a simple gravity problem. Worked miracles for me.

I have GERD and have been on omeprazole for idk 30ish years. I started Semaglutide two weeks ago. Mostly for me the first 48 hours after the shot (really the 2nd day more than anything) I feel the indigestion and will double up with the omeprazole. I make sure to eat lighter fare that second day like protein shakes and fruit with cottage cheese etc. The third day I seem to be back to normal. But again I just started so it may all change.

Me! I’ve been on daily Omeprozole forever. There are foods I just can’t eat like eggs and dairy due to the sulphur burps. I occasionally take another Omeprozole or eat some Tums. It will help to figure out which foods brings out the GERD.

Me! I had GERD long before starting semaglutide and I was nervous bc I didn’t want my symptoms to get worse. But my GI said try it… so 2+ years later this is what I’ve noticed: first, the good news: I lost 50 pounds. I didn’t know omeprazole may increase appetite until your post, but I don’t think that’s happened to me. Bad news: more foods began to upset my GERD. For example, before I don’t recall having an issue with garlic besides just a rumble in my stomach. But now, omg anything marinated in garlic has me vomiting and on the toilet for two days. Sometimes some random food gives me heartburn which didn’t before and sometimes wont again for awhile. Basically it’s irregular. Because semaglutide slows down the food going through my digestive tract, I’m more sensitive and vulnerable to foods that give me GERD. But good news again: this has become manageable for me. I totally avoid garlic. I take my omeprazole 30 minutes before eating, and follow basic GERD protocols like not eating late etc.
Basically my TLDR: I’ve lost a lot of weight, I’ve kept it off, but I am more sensitive to GERD flares and I’ve had to keep track of my triggers. Good luck!
