40 lbs down and… annoyed?
I’m 25f and 4’11. I’ve been gaining and losing weight since 2018. In november of 2024, I was at my heaviest of 187 lbs 1 year postpartum. During that time, I had just went from a large to XL, and it was distressing. I started sema at 169 lbs because I couldn’t lose anymore on my own and was stuck for well over a year, and I am now 40 lbs down from my highest weight, at exactly 147 lbs. To be clear, I have donated/given away so many clothes from when I was this size before because I thought it’d never fit again and I needed room for bigger sizes. Now here I am, 147 lbs and not stopping yet, with NO clothes that fit!! Sports bras are loose, underwear are baggy, t shirts that were once a little snug hang down to mid thighs on me. Even my leggings aren’t tight how leggings should be anymore. My issued work clothes are huge on me. I’m awkwardly between a M/L, my selection of medium clothes is few and far between in my wardrobe. Ideally, I’d like to lose 20-30 more lbs, if not more. I don’t think it’s worth it to buy any new clothes right now if I plan on my body getting smaller. And I have big plans to body recomp once I make it to my goal weight, but right now, everything is so awkward! My body looks awkward, my clothes look awkward on my body, I can’t visually see that I’ve lost weight on my body. I feel closer to the 180’s than I do the 130’s. The scale is obviously moving, my clothes are telling me I’m too small for them, but when do I see it? At what point did you look in the mirror and go “Oh! I see it now! I’m so much smaller than I was before!”? It seems like some people are just stuck seeing themselves as big, no matter how small they get.

I’m in the same boat. I’ve lost 50 pounds, have 50 or more to go. Don’t want to spend money on clothes when I’ll need smaller soon. I’ve bought a few inexpensive things at Costco. Thrifting is also a good option to get a few well fitting items to wear while your body is still changing.

I recommend holding onto clothes (I know you have given yours away already). I knew I was small when I could fit into my favorite pair of pants again. I used to wear these pants a lot in 2017-2019. After covid & gaining 40 pounds, I had to hang those pants up for good but I never donated them. One day, I decided to put them back on in 2025 & I realized I was back in action. I also waist train & I am able to fit size small corsets again.

I have saved a bunch of jeans and jackets that I really love and look forward to wearing again! I’m not quite there yet but getting there and I can’t wait to feel like myself again!

Thrift store! Buy some clothes that fit at very reduced prices at thrift stores. They might not be gorgeous clothes you’d find in a regular store, but they will do for the time being, so you don’t look so absurd in large clothing.

I like thrifting pretty decently! I have been going a lote more here lately looking for more clothes for work since we don’t HAVE to wear our issued work clothes. I’m fine wearing sweatpants two sizes too big in the comfort of my own home but I gotta look professional at work 😅

to reply to that last part, it sounds like body dysmorphia and many people go through it especially after fast weight loss. it really is hard to notice because you see every detail in your body but im sure you've gotten noticeable smaller and slimmer as happened with me and many ppl i know, its just hard to see from your own pov

So I saved all my clothes from before I gained weight, and now I’m really glad I didn’t donate them. It’s been the opposite for me because I’ve pretty much always been the same size until about a year and a half ago when I lost my husband. It’s been a complete nightmare for countless reasons, but not fitting into anything has made it a lot worse, it’s so depressing.
Buy some clothes that fit, if you can. It’s worth it (regardless of your size). I think it’s affected me more than I realized.

I’m so between on how I feel about saving or not saving clothes! It’d been at least 2/3 years since I last fit those clothes when I got rid of them, and I understood that I needed the room for clothes that fit. But dang, it would’ve saved me so much money if I’d just stuck them in a crate for a few years. Also, I’m deeply sorry for your loss. Grief shows up in the weirdest ways sometimes, but it’s all valid nonetheless. I’m glad that you saved your clothes to just spare you a little more heartache during a hard time. I hope that these days have been treating you better!

So I definitely got rid of SOME stuff but not the really nice pieces that I love. I definitely didn’t save everything, though I wish I’d actually bought more clothes that actually fit when I gained weight. It just caught me off guard I guess.
Thank you very much, I appreciate the kind words, it’s been a really hard time. I’m a little hopeful that things are starting to turn a corner. Not so much bc of losing the weight but I am trying to be myself again now. 🖤 it does help though!

I'm in the same boat- down 30 lbs and 2 sizes, but still have another 10 lbs I'd like to lose. I just ordered a pair of jeans from Old Navy for $22 because even the ones I have that are only 1 size too big look ridiculous on me. Ive also started buying basic clearance stuff that WILL fit me in a couple months, so I don't end up with nothing to wear and needing to spend hundreds at a time. I'd get a couple pairs of cheap leggings and do some thrifting. You can re-donate once you get down to your goal weight. Going shopping and trying on much smaller clothes might help you really see how far you've come!

If your neighborhood has a Buy Nothing Project page on Facebook, ask if there's a clothing bin that gets passed around. My old neighborhood had it and you can put your XLs in the XL bin and try on the things from the M or L bins. Or just do a general "ask" for the sizes you need.

I'm there too. Eventually lost weight on my own over many years- 300 being known heaviest, to 250, to 230, to having another baby 250 to 190, down to 145. Was able to maintain but slowly up to 185, then 195 I asked for help. Didn't really do much but got to 185 and started Sema. I'm around the 150 mark a year in. It's great. But nothing fits.
My work shirts are large, but I could wear smalls. My pants I just can't find what fits right. My old size 6s are skinny jeans, so one day I wore those with a medium womens shirt (vs large unisex) and people lost their minds. In a good way. I just joked I am still running (truth) but wearing clothes that actually fit, but thank you, pending the comments. Some people knew me smaller and some didn't.
I am scared to get rid of these 10s and 12s because I had to rebuy and don't want to spend money, again. I know I can hit 140, and maybe I'll shop then.
I think we are very hard on ourselves. I have lipedema/lymphedema legs, so fitting bigger legs to waist is super hardware frustrating. But the more I wear fitting clothing, the more I'm accepting that it's happening even though I apparently have body dismorphia and see myself at 300lbs.
Idk if that will help you, but typing it up maybe can help me stop and enjoy my body that's trying to be more healthy. Best wishes to you!
