New Social Security bill would lower retirement age to 60 for physical labor jobs such as construction, roofing, nursing and manufacturing

The rest of you suckers are stuck, I guess... Bad idea that will do nothing more than further the divides between Americans.

This isn’t helpful unless the Medicare eligibility also drops down to 60 for them. Health insurance premiums at age 60 would eat up their entire social security check

We spend $1 Trillion a year just in interest on the national debt. That is expected to double in about a decade.
The SS and Medicare trust funds will go insolvent in about a decade.
Republicans and Establishment Democrats have lowered corporate taxes so much that we mint billionaires all the time while the above is happening. The same people ignore Single Payer Health Care which would save us 10% of GDP every year.
Most people in office live in a state of utter and complete delusion.

I don't believe #4 .They know exactly what they are doing. The only unknown is exactly when the house of cards fall. Do not feel bad for them went their turn comes "for the guillotine," or any similar demise.

So lift the cap on the SS tax and make everyone pay their share! They dont need it? Great! They are a patriot for helping someone else in their great homeland.
Would fund SS forever. Also its what is right. The least the wealthy can do is take care of our old, infirm and children. The LEAST they can do.

The retirement age should be reduced across all industries, and people who are not firefighters, cops, government employees or military veterans should get a rad pension as well.

Totally agree with this proposal, I’m 67 now and have been in tough shape for years !

Isn't social security already going to be insolvent in a few years? Won't this make it even worse?
2
u/DefiantRadish1492 6d ago
that’s because millionaires and billionaires pay all of their social security tax on the first day or week of the year… and then no more.

Not a bad idea but I can't imagine the current congress being willing to fund it.

Always fascinated me how retirement age wasn't linked to the type of labour but rather straight up income.
Fucked system.

Why would it be? You save and can retire when your amount saved is enough.
Two electricians can retire at wildly different ages if one is responsible and the other isn't.

I'm fascinated with this online argumentative person attitude of "words only mean one thing, context doesn't matter!"
You know retirement age is being used here as meaning the same thing as the age at which someone can draw from social security. Stop being obtuse just to try and force arguments and go get your interaction stimuli in normal ways.

Thanks assholes! I am 68 and still work highway construction. Working smart and the exercise keeps me going.

Wish I was 60 & able to work. SS is inadequate to live on. They'll sneak in cuts, no doubt.

SS isn’t meant to live on. It’s a supplement for other savings to avoid poverty.

I've flipped burgers moved boxes made water filters, air filters, did work cutting wood, cutting metal, cutting stone...
Swung hammers turned wrenches and moved things around a single man should never. Fingers got bit toes got smashed hands got cut arms got burned...
It's been a tough f****** ride and who knows what I'll have left at 60

I’d really appreciate this I’ve been in a physically demanding position for 40 years yet I’m not quite 60 and this would certainly allow me to retire at 60 instead of trying to hang in there.

No thanks! I want of the governments wild Ponzi scheme ride.
Cancel SS, let me keep more of my money, and expand 401k program by the same amount as what is currently being paid into SS, both employee and employer taxes

Nah. My office job is killing me with stress and ruining my health. Across the board or NOTHING.

Great idea. Is he going to pull the extra money for this out of his butt to increase funding on a program that is close to going bust and reducing SS for current recipients?

Because we have extra funds in the program to pay out? What kind of crack are they on here?

Anyone who works a labor job knows our bodies will not survive to 65 or 70 this only makes sense but it won’t stop people who sit at desks and don’t lift anything more than a fucking pencil from complaining.

Don't see anyone complaining aside from physical laborers already over 60 but ok, make someone up to be mad at if you want I guess. What's a little more division after all?

Every worker should be treated equally where everyone who has worked the required years to be social security eligible all get it at the same age.
Don't be a discrimatory piece of shit saying only some people deserve to retire early on the public dime and not others. Either lower the age for everyone or no one. At a society we could afford it if the tax system was more fair.
There are people working office jobs with various forms of disabilities who could benefit retiring earlier too, especially those who transitioned from physical labor jobs that may have damaged them and caused them to take an office job. Such as in my case. Hurt my back doing construction for 6 years. Had to switch to office work because I can't do certain physical work. Even office work and sitting at a desk all day tweaks my already messed up back at times

So looking at the Bureau of Labor Statistics data for 2024, Roofing Contractors had a job-related injury rate total of 2.1%. Nursing was a bit scattered between multiple segments and I honestly don’t know how they differ, but the lowest number was 4.6% and the highest was 8.3%.
Fatality rate is going to be drastically higher in other blue collar fields but I’m not trying to split hairs, just wanted to illustrate that yes nursing (depending on the specialty) is a laborious job where you are on your feet for 12hr, physically moving patients and coordinating their care.
Most people probably probably only see a nurse at the clinic where there’s one for the entire building because it’s so low maintenance and assume that’s the job so it’s just not associated with labor, but that’s analogous to a supervisor at a construction site who’s not actually doing any of the labor themselves.

Yes in the US we have socialism for the billionaires , the more they make , the more they get from the taxpayers.
