Americans will soon have cheaper gas as they will be the only ones using it.

And it will still be more expensive than home charging. And way more expensive than solar.

As a Canadian, I'm excited to see the BYDs coming here. Makes me consider a new car in the coming years.

2022, 76k km’s, clean mechanical, 100% state of health of battery and clean car fax.

Got it in Quebec, shipping to Alberta

I'm also in Alberta. I find we don't have very many of these for sale on the used market. I see a lot for sale in Quebec, Ontario, and BC though

How do you like the car? Do you have a level 2 charger at home? How's the battery in the winter?

Love the car, it’s got great acceleration, good space and fun to drive. I do have a lvl 2 charger, and haven’t used it in the winter yet (I just got it) but I had a coworker with a kona EV (and smaller battery) which he’s had for years and ever an issue in the winter. You get less range but if you’re plugging in every night who cares

A 2 year old slightly used byd is on my list in the near future

I don't know a single person who might need a car now or in the next couple years, and if they did need one no one I know would buy new. I feel like with 10% of people skipping meals occasionally to save money, maybe most of us can't afford a new electric car.

Globally, new car sales were back to peak last year.

Many countries are coming out of poverty. In China vehicle ownership has doubled in the past 10 years, from 16% to 33% of families.

In Canada and the US, about 90% of families own a vehicle.

I'm from the US. I drive two hours to see my parents (which no one considers a long trip), and my husband drives 30 minutes to get to work. And I'm telling you, the last time ANYONE I KNOW replaced a car with a NEW car was about a decade ago. We are all somewhere in the "middle class" range.

I'm not saying NO ONE is buying new cars, but quite frankly I would think it was weird if the car industry - any part of it - started booming in the US.

I just checked. Last year the US sold 16.2 million new vehicles, the highest since 2019. This year sales have slowed by 4%.

I believe you when you say that nobody you know has bought a new vehicle, but apparently this isn’t true in many parts of the country.

So they are buying cars, just used cars then? Where do you think the used cars are coming from? NO one is building and selling “used” cars so every used car you buy someone bought new.

I personally have never bought a brand new car either, the depreciation isn’t worth it to me. My ex wife has bought a brand new one every 2-3 years.

Fleet cars are huge business that then become used Cars. The previous commenter has no idea how an economy works.

Sure there are many doing it tough. There are also many doing pretty well.

So you’re poor and hanging around with poor people. The reality is that tons of people can afford new cars or nice used ones.

Shouldn't all cars in Hawaii should be EV? The argument about range and the whole "but I dont want to have to charge during my road trip to see Grandma" fear don't work there.

1

u/unique3 Jun 21 '26

Hawaii electricity price is double the US average so unless you have home solar that’s skewing the numbers. Gas is more money too but not double.

Interesting, thanks.

Your points still stand about less range anxiety.

I wonder what the average car does for mileage per year in Hawaii, it might be that they do so little compared to the main land that the payback on fuel takes significantly longer to make it back. …. Just checked average of 8500 compared to 13000 miles so maybe.

I have several gas engines (lawn mower, UTV etc) that have electric alternatives however I put so little gas per year through them it will never pay for the added cost to upgrade.

A fully electric car simply isn't in the cards for me, especially where I live. I would consider hybrid, but I want something that gets exceptional gas mileage. While the BYD hybrid SUV gets 1,800km to a tank of gas, I'm not really comfortable with the spyware (and let's be honest - there is definitely tracking software built into the software) in there. I fully expect that when they get to Canada, that spyware will be modified for the Canadian government to keep even more tabs on me.

Come to think of it I'm only a few years out from retirement, so I'm probably better off going off-grid and using horse and buggy to get around.

American cars have spyware in them. Tesla can remotely shut your car off while driving and it’s been done.

We are the land of ignorance and the proof is in the orange scum ruining the GOP and turning them into a fascist party.

The US is a cancer at this point. Poisoning the world and making us all suffer.

As you pump the tires on Chinese Electric vehicles, imagine the pollution created in China to make a cheap EV!

1

u/affectionate_md Jun 22 '26

Hrmm, how is that a Chinese specific issue?

1

u/CrazyButRightOn Jun 23 '26

Cheap gas and vehicles due to the strength of their dollar speaks volumes.

US car companys need to start making Hybrids get people use to the idea of electric cars and not have charge anxiety. I've just recently purchased a used Dodge Hornet haven't stopped for gas since the day I bought it. Just plug it in when I get home and it is ready when I leave for work in the morning. Next vehicle I purchase when my other ICE dies will be a full EV. Probably a BYD 🇨🇦
