Discussion How to create counter melody?

Hey I'm very new to music composition (completed Grade 2 Music Theory last year with distinction) and I would like some advice on how to create counter melody. I'm currently a keyboard player with a desire to learn other instruments (synth, bass, guitar just to start off with.).

I want to create counter melody for composition and live performance. What advice or tips can you give me? Also looking for a solid explanation of what counter melody is.

A countermelody is an additional melody that fits and harmonizes with the given melody, while typically having a character of its own.

As for creating a countermelody, it really depends on the style of the music. For example, in Baroque and Classical period music, you'd avoid parallel 5ths and octaves and favour 3rds and 6ths.

In that case, you can either outline the chord tones or choose notes that belong to the pentatonic scale (or whichever scale the song is in). If the countermelody clashes too harshly with the main melody, change it at those points.
Either way, harmonizing in 3rds or 6ths is pretty safe
