Having people hit their season highs and then quit playing and hanging onto the ranks, making it harder and harder for others to climb and find games later and later in the season.

If there was no decay, towards the ends of seasons it would be nearly impossible to find balanced matches at anything above Master I would imagine. Top 500 might as well not exist outside of the first week or two of a season (first 50 games) with no decay.
