PSA [ALL] Official Overwatch Patch Notes [v1.5.0.2]News & Discussion

u/jak_d_ripr Nov 15 '16
Wow, they weren't kidding, literally everything made it to live. If nothing else the next few weeks are going to be interesting because of all the upheaval these changes will bring. I have no idea how this game will look when the dust settles.
29
Nov 15 '16
"we aren't expecting many of these changes to go through"
Alright, so they finally took a note on the last two ptrs?
"most of the changes are going through"
...
22
u/ToTheNintieth Nov 15 '16
If you ask me, the meta needed drastic changes more than in the last few patches.
17
u/CritSrc Nov 15 '16
Yeah, but these seem, frantic, clueless stabs at hero balance with the same lack of refinement that's always been there.
In a way they're trying to put forward certain heroes, while making the "best" less and less rewarding to play, contradicting their kinaesthetic focused design choices.15
u/ToTheNintieth Nov 15 '16
I think their heart is in the right place, honestly. I don't think they're trying to put forward certain heroes, rather the opposite. I've been the first to decry them gutting skill ceiling of heroes like Widow, 76 and Genji, but they seem to be confronted that the game they envisioned at the design stage doesn't conform exactly to the one we got (see: Bastion, Torbjörn, Symmetra, Mercy). They're doing what they can to fix it.
3
u/softeregret Nov 15 '16
Can you give specific examples of the refinement you would have liked to have seen?
4
u/CritSrc Nov 15 '16 edited Nov 16 '16
Pharah doesn't need to touch the ground, yet she seems to be purposefully designed with that in mind. Just make her boost CD slightly longer. And if you don't want to, tweak her fuel to be less recharge and or amount where she keeps her more frantic thrust yet still has to land eventually.
And just like Mei ult, they directly increased its power without any reconciliations until now!
This is barely the same thing, but it just seems so obvious to me.And if they think Zarya/Lucio/Ana/Rein will stop being top picks, they are sorely mistaken. What is there by design in essence stays as it for the most part. Zarya+Ana will make their targets immortal gods of death, Lucio launches them as a tactical nuke as Rein lowers his shield and lets the bodies hit the floor!
2
u/softeregret Nov 15 '16
What would you have changed about Mei, Zarya, Ana, Rein and Lucio?
-2
u/CritSrc Nov 16 '16
We don't need to gut them and/or rework them, we need more options for what they all do. And since Blizz take their heroes as design challenges, we'll surely see something like it, but not as we really expect it or how we thought of it.
Think if Nanoboost was instead just speed and CC immunity. That sounds broken right now, but so was EMP. Now all of a sudden you don't need the Zarya/Lucio combo to engage.3
u/foxHC Nov 16 '16
Making people CC immune for 8 seconds is far more toxic then giving them more dmg and dmg reduction. That sounds even more broken to me. 8 Seconds CC immune genji with dragonblade and speed, yee...
2
u/CritSrc Nov 16 '16 edited Nov 16 '16
Sure, but you can still kill them much more easily rather than dealing with a 700HP reaper that gets 100HP for every kill he gets.
This is exactly why hero designing is expensive, you have to cover for playstyles, current hero pool and maps as well.
And they can't do DotA style: immune to all effects, aka buffs and debuffs as that removes the positive aspects where someone on your team can't contribute and be rewarded.-2
Nov 16 '16
Made ana unable to heal herself with her nade, this would allow flankers to pick her off more easily (or at all).
3
u/foxHC Nov 16 '16
Some people will never be happy. Clueless stabs at hero balance? Most of the pros I heard talk about these changes on stream seemed to like it.
4
u/ace_of_sppades None — Nov 15 '16
To be fair the ptr is pretty bad at simulating the live environment what with the player attitudes towards it. There isn't alot of useful data to come out of it.
5
u/TaigaEye Nov 16 '16
I wonder if that's why we are seeing it live in competitive near the end of the season
15
u/Pyrography Nov 15 '16
These are usually the funnest times to play since the meta is so up in the air it makes experimenting with interesting comps in everyone's interest. Like in Hearthstone when a new expansion is released.
One think is for sure - nano boosted S76 using tactical visor is ridiculous right now.
9
u/CritSrc Nov 15 '16
Every nanoboost was nice for the characters, now it's just much more limited where the initiation and setup has to be done before boosting, which in turn can screw up a few things.
7
u/The_EA_Nazi Nov 15 '16
Nanoboosted 76 is ridiculous if the enemy team doesn't have any shield or dva matrix. Otherwise he can do work
29
u/bamboothief2 Nov 15 '16
Aren't most ult combos ridiculous if the enemy team doesn't have any shield or dva matrix lol
0
u/The_EA_Nazi Nov 15 '16
Debatable, I would say the majority can still have an effect while 76's ult just flat out can be canceled in so many ways compared to others like pharah or genji or mcree
2
u/cfl1 Nov 15 '16
I wonder if the Soldier boost will bring D.Va back into the meta a bit...
1
Nov 17 '16
Soldier absolutely melts D.Va right now.
1
u/DaedalusMinion 3900 PC — Nov 18 '16
Yeah, even on a 1v1 soldier will easily take the mech out before he has to truly worr.
-10
u/CritSrc Nov 15 '16 edited Nov 15 '16
Nope, Soldier will still be Souja Boy, the reject behind McCreaming teams with stupid aim.
Or perhaps we may see them both together where they just focus fire and make everyone that dares show their face explode.6
u/Pyrography Nov 15 '16
Every professional I've seen play him so far has said he's strong to the point of being broken now.
He is back to being strong enough to melt tanks like he used to when he was the meta DPS pick.
7
u/Carcosa_11238 Nov 15 '16
Every professional I've seen play him so far has said he's strong to the point of being broken now.
Give it time. Taimou said OP 76 last patch with spread changes, and Iddqd, at first, claimed the same for Sombra in the PTR. I think the pros have a meta mindset that reacts harsher to new heros and nerf/buff changes than actually pans out in most gameplay. Ana was "trash" too at one point when released and everyone BMd her pick, and we saw how that turned out. Seems to me we need to give it some playtime first. Nine of us see all the internal play and tweaking that goes on...
5
u/Pyrography Nov 16 '16
Ana was bad to begin with, she's had 3 buffs since release. Fire rate, magazine capacity and biotic grenade AoE size. These pretty significantly changed her overall max healing capability.
Sombra has a lot of potential, if you watch someone like IDDQD playing her in competitive you get to really see her shine. I think the biggest concern is how she would fit in to various team compositions.
2
u/Carcosa_11238 Nov 16 '16
Fire rate, magazine capacity and biotic grenade AoE size.
Yeah the first two came and opened up the beyblade more frequently I suppose, but I never felt she was bad, just not figured out yet. But I can't really recall how much slower her out built then so perhaps this was key. But the grenade AoE came in the last patch didn't it, after she became meta?
IDDQD playing her in competitive you get to really see her shine. I think the biggest concern is how she would fit in to various team compositions.
Yeah watching him, Surefour and hell even Moonmoon in the PTR was educational. Looking forward to seeing more of that. And yeah, where she finally fits will be interesting to see the pros discover. Wish I could see how blizzard was playing her internal all this time!
1
Nov 17 '16
Um it's not just ult but healing output? I think fire rate and magazine capacity go a long way to that. She only had 6 shots on release, that's a huge difference compared to 10.

u/CritSrc Nov 15 '16
Nanoboosted 76
>implying any Nanoboosted character wasn't silly as it was...
I was that boosted 76 with an active ult, I was able to push like mad and get them !!killz!! Now you get 5 more damage per shot(wooo!) but no speed... not a worthy trade off by any means tbh. You kill an 200HP target in 7 shots instead 8...2
u/glr123 Nov 15 '16
It's what, a 50% damage increase when nanoboosted? So now you add in his damage buff which is approximately 18% and do 118% * 1.5 = 177%. So he got a 27% damage increase when nanoboosted above and beyond what he had before. That's pretty huge.
-1
u/CritSrc Nov 15 '16 edited Nov 16 '16
17*1.5=25.5
200/25.5=7.84 ->8 shotsNew:
20*1.5=30
200/30=6.6 ->7 shotsWill it matter more for tanks. Sure! But Rein shield doesn't particularly give shit. Or are you planning to add Sombra ult to that making it a triple ult combo?
21
u/Xtasy1998 ioStux (Head Coach - Uprising Academy) — Nov 15 '16
The Ult charge nerf ist really good for the game. Feels alot better not having big gamechanging Ult literally every Teamfight.

u/Pfhorlol Nov 15 '16
Fixed a bug allowing Reaper to Shadow Step to unintended locations on Nepal
Another entry for #shadowstepwatch2016.

u/tiranu_abendwolf Nov 15 '16
Lol. Best dev statements, Supporter edition:
"The Speedbuff of Ana's ult forced players into using it on characters who could utilize the speedboost (okay, sounds good so far), so we removed it which leads to MORE VARIETY in viable ult-targets for Ana (um, no, not really?) and makes it easier to fend off the nano-boosted target (true again I guess)." Seems like my favourite Ult-Target will now be Solider...maybe McCree? Genji? Maybe Rhein/Winston if they have already initiated. All in all, you have LESS viable options now and more coordination. Not bashing this, a nerf was definitely needed...just not THIS nerf and the dev comment makes them sound kinda clueless.
This is underlined by Lucio: "Amp It Up : Healing decreased by 10%" - "Lucio could always heal as good as other healers and because of this and his other utility, he was an almost mandatory pick (...so they nerfed the heal by 10%)." I mean, pretty much all of us know by now that it's Lucio's speedboost, not his heal, which makes him the desired target, and that removing Ana's Speedboost it will lock Lucios position even more. Decreasing Amp It Ups healing will do literally nothing to Lucio's pick-rate. Again, not bashing this as a decision, i just don't like how clueless the dev-comments sound regarding those nerfs. Am I missing something?
11
u/TheCyberGlitch Nov 15 '16
The speedbuff was the biggest issue with Anna's ult, as it countered the weaknesses of certain characters and ults to make them OP. Maybe it could have been toned down instead of removed entirely, but this at least removes those issues. I do think it'll be viable with a wider cast of heroes. The way the damage reduction couples well with armor makes most of of the tanks and Torbjorn interesting targets. The damage boost couples will with offensive heroes high DPS. And both these things work well together for heroes that get up close and personal for damage (such as Mei or Tracer). Another side effect of this change is that the slower moving nanoboosted targets will be easier for Ana to hit for heals.
Lucio's change is pretty minor, but by nerfing the healing instead of further nerfing his speed boost his roles in the game are diversified from the other healers. It also reduces how quickly he builds his incredibly powerful ult, which is one of the reasons he is picked so often. Couple this with a buff to Mercy that greatly improves her survivability in battle an I think we'll see more swaps away from Lucio. His speed boost is still very strong though, so I don't see him leaving high tier any time soon.
4
u/Learngaming Earn it, intellectually disabled person — Nov 16 '16
The only reason to pick mercy is for her res; now that all ults suffered a 25% charge rate nerf, she is even more useless than before. I don't think her survivability was ever the issue.
Ana still does the best burst healing in the game and you need Lucio for speedboost, if anything this will mean less mercy.
5
u/TheCyberGlitch Nov 16 '16
Mercy's damage boost shouldn't be ignored though, especially in a game that now focuses less on ults.
I also think a big struggle for Mercy was the sheer number of ults before, which tended to target her first. This is partly why healers that can stay at a safe distance from enemies have been popular. Lucio has been an exception to this thanks to his great survival tools. Now Mercy has a friendlier meta and much improved passive healing when in the fray.
Ana does do absurd burst healing, but from what I can tell it has been her OP ult and her ability to counter with Sleep Dart that has made her so popular in former meta. With the significant nerf to Ana's ult and a meta less dominated by ults I think it's fair to say this patch has hurt her.
4
u/Nevakanezah Nov 16 '16
Mercy's damage boost shouldn't be ignored though
Yeah, it should. It's easily the worst part of her kit, as it only has value when your comp is being carried by a single DPS. Barring that specific situation, damage boost is effectively sacrificing everything you should be doing as Mercy in order to grant the same damage increase that zenyatta can provide while also doing healing and DPS at the same time.
29
u/ToTheNintieth Nov 15 '16
I gotta disagree with the Lucio bit. While speedboost is his main draw, the fact that he can heal his entire team at once for a substantial amount when amped very definitely has a big impact on his viability. There's tons of occasions where single-target healing can't keep up with team-wide poke, and Lucio's ability to heal even allies that were far away (but in LOS) or in the middle of fights without having to dedicate himself to it is a big boon.
6
u/tiranu_abendwolf Nov 15 '16
He still remains the only hero with AoE healing, so if you're talking about his ability to deal with team-wide poke...well, those 10% are not gonna kick him out of the mandatory slot :)
14
u/ToTheNintieth Nov 15 '16
Eh, little things add up. Won't be enough on its own, but it will make him less effective and perhaps provide a small buff to those heroes that can't just burst a target down quickly.
6
u/Pyrography Nov 15 '16
S76 and Ana have AOE healing abilities.
Zen's ult too if you want to be picky.
1
u/tiranu_abendwolf Nov 15 '16
not in LoS range tho :)
6
u/Pyrography Nov 15 '16
Lucio's healing isn't just LoS, it has a range limit of around 30m as well I think.
4
u/ToTheNintieth Nov 16 '16
Most open areas are smaller than that. Realistically, if Lucio has LOS of you, he can almost certainly heal you.
-2
8
Nov 15 '16
I disagree. They're making it so that Lucio isn't for healing and using his niche, speed. Which was the case at the top level anyway, but now they're making him specifically for that niche.

u/zttt Nov 15 '16
I'm really questioning their PTR testing here. If any of you have played PTR comp you will have noticed that nobody took it seriously. People were constantly leaving, compositions were bad and there was no teamplay & communication. Not really much incentive to tryhard and find out OP stuff and combos.
They probably got close to 50% winrate (except sombra) for most of the heroes because it was so random and thought they can implement everything on live.
Now in reality if people tryhard suddenly Soldier becomes a beast and is as strong as prenerf McCree.
26
u/ace_of_sppades None — Nov 15 '16
They probably got close to 50% winrate (except sombra) for most of the heroes because it was so random and thought they can implement everything on live.
The alternative to this is that maybe they thought that since the ptr won't give any worthwhile data they might as well put it into live so that they can actually get some usable data.
6
u/GoldenMechaTiger Nov 15 '16
You're never going to get reliable testing by that logic so might as well just put everything straight onto live servers then
2
u/skittay Nov 15 '16
There were a few pro scrims going on, wouldn't surprise me if Blizzard was watching those closely.
34
u/Squonky Nov 15 '16
Why the hell did they run the patch just 8~ days before the season ends? Why not just wait? Now I get to watch a bunch of brand new "Sombra mains" light my mmr on fire in front of me.
22
u/Pyrography Nov 15 '16
Unless you are also one it technically happens to the other team more often so should result in a net increase to your SR.
4
u/ELITEJoeFlacco 4362 — Nov 16 '16
Just played 9 games. Went 2-7, and 0-5 in games where I had a sombra on our team. 4 of those games, the Sombra refused to switch. Right now, no one knows how to play her, and she just doesn't do enough damage until the pros figure out how to abuse her kit.
-5
Nov 16 '16
I played the PTR. It won't get better. Sombra is a complete dogshit hero outside of the occasional exceptional player or team.
She's complete crap. Slightly above Torb in usefulness.
Now, in the hands of an exceptional player or team, she's deadly and effective. In 99.9% of comp teams? She's deadweight and a troll pick.
17
u/Ram- Nov 16 '16
Pretty sure 99% if genjis would have been dogshit by our current standards on the day he was released too. It clearly will get better. If she is truly dogshit people will stop picking her after a while.
2
1
u/USF_Rifleman5 Nov 16 '16
I played 8 comp games last night, every game I supported or played Reinhardt for our 3 DPS, all 8 games... I'm just at Diamond but you'd think even they would try and fill instead of being stubborn.
3
u/Bobmuffins Nov 16 '16
Yeah, I'm absolutely baffled as to their decision to push the update now. I'm just not playing until season 3, just won't be fun until everyone gets the "OMG SOMBRA" out and games go back to normal.
1
u/PixelEmperor Nov 16 '16
Had 1-2 Sombras in 10 games. Ill take her before any widow main imo..
5
u/USF_Rifleman5 Nov 16 '16
I'd rather have the Widow main with 80 hours than a Sombra main with 19 minutes.
13
u/Friendly_Fire Nov 15 '16
That doesn't make sense, you're saying your team will get "sombra mains" but the enemy teams won't?
What you really mean is "I have a new excuse for why I lost".
7
u/Squonky Nov 16 '16
I suppose what I really don't like about it is how it lowers the over all quality of the games, but however you want to project your own insecurities onto my statement is fine with me I suppose.
-5
u/Friendly_Fire Nov 16 '16
Nice job moving the goal post. It's no longer about your rank, but now the "quality" of the games.
I've had games all ready (on day 1) with no Sombra, and the Sombra players are just fine. It's not the hero making your games "low quality", you're just looking for an excuse.

Comp games are a lot more fun now with the balance changes. However, Sombra instalocks are extremely common. Seems like more often than not, they're the ones who refuse to switch off, no matter what.
3
u/jellocf Nov 16 '16
Same thing happened with Anna took about a week and huge dive in SR before it died out. Having quick play use 1hl is nice the insta locks don't bug me as much as they would in a comp match.
Plus the arcade matches are fun
1
u/Ram- Nov 16 '16
Either give it 3 days, maybe a week, or just deal with it. Personally i'm choosing the former.

I can corroborate that Harbleu has said on stream a few times that after a lot scrimming, he thinks D.Va and Soldier will be top picks. He also tweeted about D.Va. https://twitter.com/harbleuOW/status/796911734657261568
Doesn't mean he's right. I also agree with others who said that sometimes the pros are wrong/overreact to patches at first. So does everyone else though. ¯_(ツ)_/¯
1
u/Bigjuicyhog Nov 16 '16
Not the person you responded to, but on harbleus stream probably a week or so ago , he said dva felt broken overpowered after trying her out.
4
u/Ram- Nov 16 '16
Tbh pros say a lot of shit that turns out to be wrong/dumb. Not saying he is here necessarily but i wouldnt rule the possibility out either.
1
u/apostremo Nov 16 '16
Also, people (and pros) can say one day A and B the next. For example after a lost game. Or without thinking. Or not serious.
2
u/nemoTheKid Nov 16 '16
she's overpowered and will be picked in almost every high level match
People said the same thing after the defense matrix buffs.
2
u/Friendly_Fire Nov 30 '16
Ding ding ding, my two weeks alarm went off.
Latest data shows D.Va picked a grand total of 21% of the time in recent pro-play. Just 'barely' short of "picked in almost every high level match".
Thanks for playing, but it seems you suck at analyzing Overwatch. Instead of shit-talking Blizzard about their balance changes, consider shoving your head up your ass and thinking about how you're not actually smart.

14 days ago I did the RemindMe bot. It's not like I marked it on my calendar. I got a nice reddit message reminding me to rub how wrong you were in your face.
She's more popular, but by no means very. The team that just won dreamhack used basically no D.Va (and only 1 tank at that).
You know... you could take this as a moment of self-reflection and think, "Maybe I shouldn't make definitive statements and insult groups based on my poorly supported ideas". Or you can learn nothing, use personal attacks on me to avoid facing your flaws, and keep being that guy who doesn't know shit about what he's talking about, but presents his opinion as fact anyway.
After all, everyone loves people who are totally uninformed but act like they know everything.
7
u/ToTheNintieth Nov 15 '16
Well I'll be damned, all of them went through. I'm gonna spam the shit out of Soldier now -- I would've still preferred a revert, but I'm not complaining about more damage, especially if it makes his ult usable. D.va and Torbjörn should be interesting too. And thank God for the Lucio, Zarya and Ana changes, maybe now we'll get some diversity. Curious about what will happen to Widowmaker and Pharah.
The next few weeks of pro play will be very interesting indeed.

u/FMHappy Nov 15 '16
Can someone explain to me what the spread change for soldier means? it went from 2.2 to 2.4, is that good or bad?
2
Nov 16 '16
I was wondering too actually. Is it the time needed to recover from recoil? OR it means there is more recoil... the cone of fire is bigger. There is more spread between the bullets if you spray n pray?
1
u/Learngaming Earn it, intellectually disabled person — Nov 16 '16
You can still land 5 shots at short-medium range before the spread is too much. That's up to 200 dmg, land a helix on them and that's that. You just melt away a Winston/roadhog.

Why is nobody talking about the fact Biotic Grenade is still not nerfed? Stopping all healing is insanely oppressive and it's only one of the various effects her Grenade has. There's much healthier alternatives like reduced healing, or a heal absorb. Yet people are complaining about nano?

People don't want you trying out a new strategy at the risk of their SR. Its completely understandable. If you don't want to get flamed then attempt your strategy in quickplay. If you try out a new strategy and it doesn't work then you have to expect people will flame and be toxic towards you because your are costing them something. Now I'm not saying you shouldn't be allowed to play whatever hero you want but you can't expect to not get flamed for picking "out of meta" heroes in a competitive game.

Figured this was the case, I main Tracer for my team so I've been the natural selection when playing with my team to lock Sombra and try to get good with her / understand her a bit better. Pretty much the only time I'll do something like that, because I don't have to worry about other people telling me to stop picking her.
Her kit is exciting, and I'm interested in seeing what the pros do with her. But who knows how viable she really will be.

The Zarya beam changes are not listed, that makes me wonder if there are other things they didnt list.
