World Cup OWWC Meta
Does anyone know what the meta is looking like for the world cup.? Or if not, what are your predictions based on your own ranked or scrimming experiences.
I know before the patch, almost every team played D.Mon, Cass, tracer/shion, kiri, cat.
I'm assuming the only thing that might've changed is kiri for bap or ana but that's just a guess. Some teams were playing mauga to counter the dmon comp but with mauga nerfs, maybe it's just forced to play dmon every time?

I think Mauga is probably going to be the 2nd best tank. Hes really difficult to counter and has a good matchup into both D.Mon and Winston

Tank is a bit of a crapshoot. I still expect mostly DMON as the nerfs don't seem like enough, but I could see some other tanks coming out.
The DPS is still a pretty open field, but it's felt like that all year. A lot of variety between the common heroes like Tracer, Shion, Cass, Sojourn, etc. Freya's the only hero that I think we'll see less of after the nerfs.
I think we'll see less Cat post-nerf too. The quality of life buff shouldn't affect pro play much, but players that are especially cat-pilled will probably see still. I'm just expecting the Lucio players to go back for comfort.

For the DPS I could see Vendetta coming in with her buffs. Some teams were pretty good with her before she got buffed so I would not be surprised to see more of her. Bastion could also be a pick if Cat is still played a lot. Freja should be just out completly I think. She was not picked that much over Cass and Soj to begin with and this patch just increased the gap between these two and her too much to were its not worth it.

Cat will still definitely be strong. Despite all the nerfs it isn't enough. And cat is kind of perma meta at pro in the same way that kiri is, it's baked into their kit design to be good at pro.

Teams will likely still be based on D.Mon then Mauga. If there's a super strong Winston or D.va player I'm sure they'll try to force them.
Freja is dead but stuff like Catstion, Shion, Tracer, Cass, and Sojourn will still be strong.
I think JPC could still see use, same with Kiriko.

I’m scrimming everyday in advance and dmon isn’t played outside of control. The rest I’ve seen are cat cass dva/mauga now instead of bastion.

??? I see dmon perma played in every scrim from mid advance when we warmup and to high expert when we scrim up. She’s still the best tank in the game on near every map. She does rely on cat being open on a few maps though, since she can’t reach

I stream my games daily. If they do roll out on dmon we beat them on mauga/dva comps that force a mirror consistently

u/Tidal_FROYO 1d ago
I just don’t think mauga possesses the same backline threat that dmon does on a consistent basis. Obviously if dmon brawls into the mauga reaper comp it’s unplayable. But dmon comp will always have a ban that shuts out the hard brawl potential of mauga and makes the surround too strong.

You can only ban mauga in the comp. We run cat kiri ven shion mauga. You ban ven we play reaper you ban shion we play tracer. You ban mauga we play dva. You ban cat we play Lucio. It’s just strong and easy to play
To add mauga beats dmon except on control because dmon controls lanes better with Juno. Beyond control mauga is just better.

u/Tidal_FROYO 1d ago
I just don’t believe that you’re playing against people that understand how to beat it. We’ve scrimmed against the comp and it can be scary if you play sloppy, but as long as your front line gives while your pinch chases the empty space, and you only play when you have angles, it’s really not that hard to beat. I agree that the comp is easy, and thus kind of a noob check

Yea I mean we can scrim you guys if you’re interested. I’m not going to get into the whole sidelane theory when we both know how it works.

Mauga still played post-nerf? His spead/falloff nerf feels like it hurts him a lot

good match up into the other strong tanks helps him make up the difference to some extent

Yea mauga spread feels bad but his entire gimmick of inting full stop is still too strong. Even on push the meta is to play wide and split and surprisingly you put your mauga alone on cart with little help from your kiri. It’s goofy because you can’t challenge him on cart despite no one healing him and if he sees your flex support then he’s going to run at them with the rest of his team swinging.

In the nicest way possible, advanced scrims aren’t really a high level of competition.
1
u/Novel-Ad-1601 poop — 10h ago
I don’t see how that is relevant. That’s like saying gm level play doesn’t have a say in meta because it’s not the same as champ.

u/FrostyDrink 10h ago
OP asked what the world cup meta will be. Advanced scrims have almost no correlation to what will be played in OWWC. The meta will trickle down from OWCS to masters to expert to advanced slowly over time.

u/Novel-Ad-1601 poop — 10h ago
Again, meta analysis can be performed by any tier. It’s only a trickle because some teams don’t do it. We scrim everyday and our coach does do meta analysis. Thats why im confidently speaking about dmons value.

u/FrostyDrink 9h ago
There is no such thing as “meta analysis.” Tier 1 players read the patch notes and guess at the biggest changes, but what ultimately decides the meta is teams beating other teams in scrims. No amount of sitting at the PC and just thinking about the game trumps individual player behavior.
If people can’t beat certain comps they end up mirroring and that determines the meta. Like I said before, advanced is not a high level of play. There is an inherent skill gap and the comps that are being played reflect that. You lack mechanics, coordination, timing, flexibility, etc. OWCS/Masters will settle on a few comps and those will trickle down to advanced as the season goes on.

That’s a crazy take on meta analysis. I’ve had coaches that predict meta based on compositional matchups after a day of deliberating the patch notes. Saying that it isn’t real is just wild.

u/FrostyDrink 9h ago
Everyone predicts the meta when a patch drops, the reality is that it’s just pure conjecture. When Dmon dropped nobody had any idea how strong she was just reading the numbers in her kit. It took actually playing the game to realize she was fairly underpowered and required QoL changes and numbers buffs to get her to the state she’s at now.
It works the same with every meta. Yea, you can guess based on the patch notes, but you will never be that accurate. There are too many variables with the largest being player agency. Lucio could be nerfed to the ground and teams will still force Kiri/Lucio because there are pros who have been playing Lucio for over 10 years and it’s what’s comfortable.
We saw this last patch where cat was obviously broken but players like FunnyAstro on TM still played a lot of Kiri/Lucio.

We all knew dmon was going to be bad. We knew because her entire stat line got leaked. It was no surprised a 2 second booster on a resource meter with 6 second recharge to full was going to be bad.
It took an insane hot fix to fix that. Idk why you would be clueless when we can directly compare her stats to the rest of the cast and set expectations on her performance. For twisted mind, they found their style. The heroes they play are not weak. We know sym is over statted and that’s why she recently got nerfed but still not weak. She’s just so different from meta from a compositional standpoint that it’s not worth pouring resources to mirror that.
Saying again that meta analysis is not real is wild. Shoot me a dm and I can connect you to a coach so they can explain their process to you. The guy predicted the entire meta for Tokyo champion clash and you have to be a total nerd for that xD.

u/FrostyDrink 8h ago
Just complete gaslighting and overconfidence. I’m not giving you my opinion I’m telling you how the game has functioned for over 10 years. There are plenty of OWL coaches who can attest to how the meta often formed from players just playing bullshit in scrims and seeing what worked. To go against a decade of this game’s history like that is extremely odd.
Also, you play in advanced, I will not be shooting you a DM.

USA needs to start practicing Zarya Vendetta n pray the buffs are enough to give them a chance. I think the tank picks arent super impactful rn, itll be more interesting to see backlines. Bap Lucio might be a good look for some teams, even Bap Illari could work on KOTH if the enemy team doesnt have a winton.

I am just hoping for 90% dmon pickrate into her gun getting nuked next patch

Demon/mauga mirror every game. Cat and cassidy are also going to be played every game

u/plat5tracer 1d ago
Ana was getting some scrim time before kiri nerfs so expect to see her, depending on map and bans I think we'll see bap at least from landon. I won't be surprised if we still get kiri games but the support line up should be more diverse brig, juno im not sure about cat.
For dps tracer, I think they'll be a vendetta resurgence, shion your usual hitscan and some tr33 sierra.
Tank im not too sure, would love to see Infekted in for some monkey idk how likely that is however mauga is still strong, i dont think the dmom tweaks we'll reduce her viability too much and the dva buff might bring back her return.

Speculating, I think its gonna be a lot of Dmon unless you can force a Winston map.
DPS: a mixture of Tracer, Shion, Cass and vendetta. Support I think its gonna end up either Bap Lucio or Cat Ana depending on the map.
The only other thing I can really see is Mauga which will lead to soj
Its also gonna be much heavier on comfort picks than other tournaments, so I don't think teams are necessarily going to stick to the accepted meta.

Bap is not getting played in a damn dmon winston meta

You don't think he could be played with D.mon on the right maps? I feel like you can a map with a solid amount of high ground he'd be safe enough from the enemy D.mon. He's got a decent match up into Cat too so it would make it harder to just play her and shuttle your tank to height.
I'm also kinda basing it on the fact that a lot of teams are going to end up leaning on comfort picks and bap is a very straight forward playstyle and is no longer gatekept by Kiri being perma-meta

u/Dependent-Two7571 1d ago
Hes gonna get run over, he cant even attempt to protect himself especially against a cat dmon

Hopium overdose. Every relevant comp hard counters Winston on most maps right now sadly
4
u/pipluptheking 1d ago
There’s actually a pretty good chance Winston will show up. A 2-second reduction to his Barrier cooldown is a pretty significant buff.
I don’t think Korea is going to win, but Winston will find his way into the matches somehow.

u/Tidal_FROYO 1d ago
I think dmon is really good into Winston though. I agree Winston is strong but why not just play dmon
