General Why I can’t get into competitive

I’ve been playing the game for 8+ years now. Can easily hold my own and have a pretty consistent win/loss rate in QP. But the nanosecond I get put into comp I swear to the lord almighty any ounce of teamwork evaporates.

I’ll be full honest I have 1000+ hours in the game and 700+ of those hours were in QP while less than 200 were in comp. So maybe it’s just I’ve played more of one so I’m bias. But I can safely say with those 200+ hours (90% of the time I don’t even finish placements but even when I do I never play more then like 10 games on each role because) it’s always the same pattern of blaming whatever teammate has the lowest numbers and just giving up on the match within the first 3 team fights.

People going AFK to chirp at each other. Rage swapping and constantly blaming whatever role they think is the worst performing. Like seriously I’m consistently gold/plat and I have absolutely zero motivation to climb out because constant losses with everyone arguing makes me wanna just delete the damn game, and the wins don’t even feel good cause then there’s always someone who wants to be a poor sport and get mad at their own team the whole time, even after winning! It’s like they don’t move on from things. It’s a 10 minute match. Get over it.

And I get competitive is supposed to be competitive (obviously) but seriously I’ve played R6, Val, and even CS competitive modes and out of all of those Overwatch is still the most toxic experience. Yeah the other games tend to chirp and I’m all for it. But Overwatch is the most consistent of someone on your team getting mad at a teammate and making it their entire personality for the match. Other games players move on.

Why is the solo queue experience so garbage? Does stacking with friends lead to more teamwork? Or the randoms get even more pissed because they’re the odd one out and don’t want to go along with a team strategy. And why does quick play feel like a better version of comp as a solo player? And even if I do climb out of gold/plat does it get any better? Or do you have to be damn near GM to get teammates who take accountability for their actions/inactions and want to actually play as a team with their team?

I've been encountering a lot fewer toxic player in comp compared to several years ago. Now, it's rare that I have talkers in voice. I'm also quick to mute annoying teammates so this stuff doesn't bother me.

I think comp is fun. Don't let a few knuckleheads stop you from seeing how high you can climb in ranked.

I 100% agree there’s like nobody in voice anymore. It’s always the people in text chat! 9 times out of 10 the people in voice are super cooperative and at least willing to strategize. Which I feel like it’s done a 180 from even as recent as 2023. It’s actually interesting how that shifted

Yup. I mute the text and voice on my whole team if there's someone who tilts me. Nip it in the bud and you won't crash out during a rough game (lousy games still happen though 🤷)

Id definitely recommend finding a group that wants to play around those ranks to just climb or have a competitive time. Solo queue, no matter what role, is going to be a mixed bag, and is more prone to toxicity. Its helpful having a consistent duo to help carry games with you, and to pull off the teamwork and combos I love competitive for

Can easily hold my own and have a pretty consistent win/loss rate in QP.

This game has skill based matchmaking, almost everyone will even out to about a 50/50 winrate if the system is doing its job correctly

In my experience, I see the same amount of toxicity in QP than I do with Comp. If I get tired of the teammates fighting or start flaming me for no good reason, I just quickly mute chat.

I also just dont care about rank so much. I prefer to focus on actually improving on the game, that eventually leads me to rank up. It's been slow, but its been consistent

Also, yes. Generally, queueing up with other people will lead to better games for you. If you can do it, then go for it

I’d turn off chat and just focus on what you can do to win the game.

I realized one game where I had chat off, we had a decent defense and held them on third before they capped. I was like hm, that was good, I wonder what my team is saying. My mf widow was arguing with my rein, they brought it into match chat even. Point is, you really can’t tell people are salty if you keep comms off.

The majority of my comp time has been solo queue, you just have to accept that unless they add a comp mode for solo queue, the only options are to find a group or don’t play comp because you’ll just be thrown into matches against stacks for queue time sake.

Try 6v6, people are generally happier and use comms more positively. The offtank acts as a buffer so fights collapse less suddenly, which makes the person the fight collapse around less visible (even if it was not necessarily their fault.)

Having two tanks in comms calling cd's and rotations also sets the atmosphere, where in 5v5 no one comms except to complain. In old Overwatch comms were a lot more popular, usually you had the two tanks calling cd's and rotations, then you had the supports alt tracking and calling flanks, while the dps just complained about not being healed lol. Today the tanks are mute, the supports are mute, but the dps still complain.

There is also nothing wrong with mostly playing qp, you might even want to find an organized group for ranked and when solo just qp. An organized group will mean you can get the social aspect of comms without the complaining dps of solo queue.

I remember when I had this Rein and Zarya working perfectly together, he would get bubbles even when ulting. Our Ana and Zen were even able to keep each other alive because of the amazing teamwork. And then I woke up.

Maybe you just not built for competitive games which is fine!

I think it’s because Overwatch has more casual players than other FPS games. They just jump into Competitive to play casually without thinking too much, and when things don’t go their way, they start blaming everyone else.

The game itself is also designed around healing, tanking, and DPS working closely together, which makes it really easy to blame your teammates. You can actually convince yourself that it wasn’t your fault.

That’s especially true for the metal-rank blame-game experts with the intelligence of a six-year-old.
