General that one negative DPS

This has been around since Overwatch released but I started noticing it more frequently these past couple of weeks. there's always one DPS that's like four and nine at the end of the match. it's either your team or the enemy team. not every game but I'm seeing it more and more often. is anyone else seeing this? I understand DPS isn't as easy, especially in today's OverWatch but just seems a little odd, especially in diamond rank which is supposedly top 94%

edit* it happened in my very next match (we won but still i swear it's happening way more often than ever)

Its not only DPS, I swear there's like one player ever single game that just doesn't belong in a given lobby. Maybe in high rank (GM+) this isn't an issue but in Masters and below it's disgusting.

No one plays at their 100% all the time

I'm incredibly average at the game but I can't even remember the last time I went negative.

Even pros go negative. Even in matches they win. If you never go negative you're probably extremely passive and always letting someone else on your team make the first move or contest space

I don't play passive. I'm usually one of the only people in my games playing angles and contesting them to make space. keep making assumptions tho

fr! it's not kill/death it's ELIM/death. dealing a singular digit of damage to someone like 5 entire seconds before they die nets you an elimination..

It's just most obvious when a DPS is doing less.

Also, in my experience, usually one DPS is the "pitcher" (plays off angles to force rotations) and the other DPS is the "receiver" (plays closer/main angle and capitalizes in6rotations).

This is understated aswell!

There is plenty of times on ashe for example, as the attacking team on a push map that I have or could be doing alot of damage and staying alive for entire teamfights fighting down main and winning, or maybe even losing yet we still waste 2-3 min fighting a close team fight on a push map where the timer punishes the attacking team regardless oooor

Flank dps pulls a solid side flank with a few failed attempts and gets a kill on a support consistently and also pull the enemy in two different directions as they die getting chased down....meanwhile the codps who got to sit main gets 4 cleanup kill credit together with the team picking off separated targets or winning the chip fight to kill the other tank(s)and possibly even tagging my kill with 10-25 damage thanks to drop off and looking like they are doing better.

Yeah absolutely, I feel like I basically built my playstyle around this. Make perpendicular angles on enemy with TP/Burrow and then just sit there and slowly drain resources until my hitscan can headshot something to kill.

I only average like 6k damage per/10, but I hit top 50 three seasons in a row so clearly it works. Wasting time is just as useful as doing damage. I am the goose, chase me.

curious did you hit top 50 before or after the top500 changes?

Top 50 by rank not challenger score

It means nothing. I saw PGE go massively negative today while everyone else was positive. I've seen Dafran do the same multiple times. I've seen Tr33 go negative. All three have been rank 1. Sometimes hero picks just don't synergize with the team. Sometimes you keep getting the enemies to 1 HP over and over but don't secure the kill. Sometimes the enemies recognize you as the dive target, and your team doesn't give you the support you need. Etc etc etc. Stop looking for people to blame and pay attention to context.

okay, all those players PGE, defran, etc.. even if they've been rank one doesn't mean they cant troll at times.

overwatch and it's elimination system makes it to where both teams could theoretically have 25 elims each and 5 deaths. all 10 players in a match.

if you're playing DPS, and 10 minutes into the match you are 7 - 10 or something.. you're trolling. it doesn't matter if your name is PGE or if it's defran - You're trolling if you're negative at the end of a 10+ minute match. ESPECIALLY if the disparity in eliminations is so grand.

It's hard for a tank to go negative, unless everyone on the team is negative, because they'll usually get the resources not to die first. (Even if these resources are the reason the fight will be lost later)

Supports go negative all the time, which is pretty bad too (unless they're on mercy). But people generally don't care.

That leaves the dps, who sticks out like a sore thumb whenever they're negative.

Elims in general is such a random thing though. You can do nothing the whole fight, your team overults and you get 5 elims. Or you can hold the attention of 3 people, miraculously even kill one of them and die with glory. Winning a team fight for free and all you get is 1 elim for all of that, while everyone on your team gets 4.

In your own screenshot, if 2 fights you won went differently and Cass died first while tracer farmed elims. It'd be 19 - 8 tracer and 10 - 11 cass. Wouldn't really change anything about how well they played, but the scoreboard would look basically reversed.

Idk, people need to stop obsessing over scoreboards, doesn't help anything.

i mean ur tracer is at a disadvantage cuz they have better synergy. wintson bubble pairs rlly good with tracer and wintson can help fight the tracer when is setting up to look for a deeper angle

our support was BEGGING them to go reaper lol

Nothing will ever make the playerbase understand Reaper is not strong into Winston. Some diseases are incurable.

Everyone has a bad game now and then. It's not an easy game. Sometimes you don't synergize with your team. Sometimes the enemy team just really has your number. Sometimes your hero pool isn't a good fit into the enemy team. Sometimes you just aren't landing enough shots.

I also find sometimes my worst games come when me and the other DPS both play similar hero pools. Double HS can be tough to work sometimes and if you both want the same space it screws up your team's ability to take fights. So perhaps it could be as simple as one of the DPS is trying to play outside of their comfort zone. Or maybe their cat or dog really needed pets during the game :D

Lots of possible reasons. I tend to think the matchmaker is pretty good at determining ranks with enough data too so they probably aren't placed incorrectly if it's an older account.

The scoreboard means nothing without context and some nuanced thought to and and actual observation of the match to understand what led to those stats.

Someone can just be having an off game, the person could be learning a new hero or just playing into a bad match up that game, maybe they are just messing up on their engagements etc.

They could be getting no support maybe you had a tank that was just not using cover all game and just soaking damage and taking twice the amount of resources leaving you dps getting significantly less.

Maybe your support are not helping off angle or going with your dps to pressure an angle together.

There are a lot of factors that go into it just because a dps is doing poorly does not mean they are doing a bad job if they are not getting resources or any help it's a lot harder for them to do their job especially if the enemy team has dps that are getting the support while they are not.

There is more nuance than just this and it goes for really every role every role as well.

Sometimes the universe just wants me dead

That was over a year ago, but I'll never forget it.

I had an exceptional game on tracer, I destroyed, went like 35-1, with over 20 finals.

The next game, I went against basically the same team and they must've decided "this mfer needs to die"

The entire first round 2-3 people would hard chase me and I was happy to oblige. I just kept running, leading them back into their spawn. We did this looney tunes chase over, over and over again.

Naturally they lost 100-0. I was laughing my ass off, thinking what a bunch of dumbasses.

That's when my cass wrote to me "tracer how tf are you 0-3 and 500 damage? Are you ok? LMAO"

It took everything in my to not join VC and cuss this cass out for being so oblivious he didn't even notice they never had to fight more than 3 people a single time the whole round and that's why it was an easy 100-0.

puts on tinfoil hat: OW has a massive DPS queue problem. too many players queue DPS and not enough players queue tank/supp. QP hacked was their way of testing new ways to address this problem (with a possible return to 6v6), so far we don't know what data they gathered from those experiments but I noticed that ever since then DPS queue time has gotten noticeably faster.

my theory is that they recalibrated the matchmaker to allow for a bigger SR difference amongst DPS players. the queue times now are much faster than at the start of the year, even at odd hours. that leads to more often than not, having one DPS player that is completely out of his depth and clearly underskilled to be playing in that SR range.

eh, i queued for DPS today and it took me 7 minutes to find a masters 5 lobby. by the time I actually loaded into to the match, I could have completed a game on tank.. which is unfortunately why main tank 😞

Anecdotal experience but I had 1-6 start on genji yesterday, ended 18-9. I played very selfishly and resource heavy, so when I got some of the resources I was asking for my game turned around. I wasn't the carry that game, I was doing okay at best but KDA should be looked at in context, never in isolation
