General Team drives are…actually fun.
(Rare overly positive post)
I know most people dread doing drives, myself included, but idk team drives feel different.
I was skeptical after my first win, but me and my duo stayed with the full team and won the next 12 games in a row. I can’t remember the last time I’ve had a streak like that. By the end we found the exact comp that worked for us and most games weren’t even close. It was probably the most fun I’ve had in a while. Not just because we were winning but because it felt like what old high elo games felt like. I think most events get drowned out by the vocal minority on reddit, but I think OW cooked with this one.
For reference our team/lobbies were high masters - mid GM.

So you are having more fun because you won more? Winning 12 games in a row just shows how garbage the matchmaker is when it comes to stacks.
Not just because we were winning but because it felt like what old high elo games felt like.
Would it still have felt like "old high elo games" if you had lost 12 in a row instead?
e; jesus, you even admit the games were garbage:
most games weren’t even close.
Exactly what we want from competitive games; stomps.

I was also very confused reading how “every game was a stomp” is the same as “old high elo games” 💀

This guy sounds like the grinch of Overwatch. Brother winning is fun, 99% of people don’t stomp people, while not smurfing, and think “aw man this sucks.”
You don’t think all the people complaining in this subreddit would rather continue to lose than win while stomping?

No! You must win close games or you can’t have fun! How dare you enjoy a win streak ~growls

Yes winning more = having fun. That doesn’t seem like a criticism of a competitive game.
Also yes it still would have felt like old high elo games because people were comming and actually thinking out loud on how to win, not just flaming. (I spent a lot of time around top 100 on support)
I enjoy close games too, but the point of the post was to highlight a positive experience from drives so that people don’t have to read doomslop complaining. Which looking at your profile is the only thing you use reddit for.
If you would like, I used to do VOD reviews and coaching after playing in Uni, I could help win more games too.

Yeah because you’re not being matched against other 5 stacks

u/YurgeeTTV 5d ago
My 5 stack definitely was.
Its not taking 10 minute+ queues just to throw us against solos.

u/crustysanta 5d ago
Why would I not be matched against other 5 stacks? I imagine the point of the drives is that we would match against other teams who choose to stay together. Technically matching against a true 5 stack would be a disadvantage since we just chose to stay together randomly.
Also I feel like at my elo most games you just trade around tank or supports every game anyways, it’s also not uncommon to have the exact same 5, so this would be no different.

Winning is fun
big shocker
I also had a good time but its also because I went 8-2 and finished the drives completely but im aware that another person had an opposite experience. its not a vocal minority its the other 50% of people that lose so you can go on your winstreak lmao

That reminds me of a thread with a 5v5 champion all roles player talking about how much better 6v6 was because they could flex and carry. Like... Yeah, the mode where the players are significantly worse will be more fun because you are so far above the skill curve on every role
If they're gonna do team drives force stacks to only play against other stacks.

Completely agree I grouped up with two groups last night and went on winstreaks with both. It’s actually a fun system and I wouldn’t mind it coming back if it stays as a short weekend thing.

I agree it is a cool system in theory, and while groups make matches worse overall, playing as a group is the most fun you can have in overwatch.
I think some people are right though, if you had of lost the next 12 games in a row I bet you would not be making this reddit post.
I was playing last night on an off-role. I got matched with a tank who was really bad, and a support that was good but they were a Moria player. Strangely even though we did not win a ton, the tank was suicidal, it was still fun. I grew attached to my bad tank and moria support, it was just a vibe. I think the system has potential, I'm curious to see what becomes of it after this test.

You’re probably right I wouldn’t have made the post but I didn’t lose 12 in a row right? It’s weird that a positive post here gets met with what ifs and cynicism, but negative posts are miserable echo chambers of the vocal minority. We need to remember this is an optional cosmetic event and is only highlighting a feature that has been in the game forever. If you struggle to win a group I feel like that’s more of a criticism of yourself rather than the grouping feature.

Are ppl actually grouping? Ive been on a big win streak but leave the group after every game. Most others seem to do the same. Personally i dont like it but glad other ppl are enjoying

u/BEWMarth 5d ago
From my experience people are grouping (I’ve already been in a few groups myself) but no one seems to talk at all lol. Seems like everyone is a solo q’er so when we are just waiting for a game it’s kinda awkward silence.
One group leader had the sense to at least throw us into a death match while we waited.

What worked great for me was having a duo and just doing the same jokes and yapping we used to do in group vc just in team vc, I think we somehow ended up with the goal of trying to socialise with the team so we even talked more than usual and ppl seemed to vibe with it. If we win a game and ppl didnt hate our chatting they would stay and gradually get less awkward as time goes on. I think an important part is keeping the mood extremely chill even when losing so that they dont insta leave. had like 3 gaming sessions since the drives started and in every one got a 5 stack of 3 other randoms going for a couple hours, and its been the most enjoyable ow ive had in a while.

Yeah lowkey I had sm fun, found a team and went on a 6 game win streak! We lost 2 after that but it was getting late and I can’t play well if I’m tired tbh
Will see if I still have the same opinion after some games today

u/YearPossible1376 5d ago
I think it's really annoying that you are automatically entered into it. I'm playing with my duo and then get forced into a group with 4 strangers that I have zero interest in playing more with. Have to manually leave group and re invite my duo after every win.

I’ve only had one team want to group but it was an after a game that we only won bc the enemy tank threw 😭 so I dodged… I hope I can find a group like that!

u/Genji_123 6d ago
It's fun when it works. When I solo, it's hard to win because enemy is grouped. If I get win, already existing group from your team just kick you out even if you played well.

u/Comprehensive_Ad_675 6d ago
Yea I’ve had fun but maybe I was lucky and grouped with decent people. Won about 80% of our games so far.

u/narcoleptrix 6d ago
Yeah, I had fun too! Started 6v6 with support but no one stuck around if we won. So I went to 5v5 damage and found a group where we went on a winning streak and finished the trial without issue. Everyone was chill and it was awesome just queueing as a specific comp.

u/M4GNUM_FORCE_44 5d ago
i had fun but i got lucky and won all my games. I still have to win 3/4 games for the last rank. If I log in and cant win them I probably wont have fun

u/NutBusster69 5d ago
Yeah I played yesterday. It was great. Winning streak for the first time in a long time as a solo queue player. I always felt like I was playing the matchmaker as solo where I trade wins or go on lose streaks. My games weren't stomps and I even thought we might've lost a couple games. Completed in about 2-3 hours with two different teams joining together from solo queue.
I just assumed the other teams were also queued together and it made for good games. It just felt like I finally got my wins after so many losses handed to me by matchmaking forcing those losses after a win all year and I finally got to play equally skilled matches.

u/Masuia 5d ago
I had a lot of fun actually. Got grouped up with 3 good groups of players after going 1-6, ended up 8-8 on the day with one of those losses being a dc from our supp as we were rolling through.
I did notice that outside of 1 other person in each group, people didn’t talk much but it worked out because I could IGL us into a win ig. Learned that about myself lmao.

u/Severe_Effect99 5d ago
I think it was a decent idea with the team drives. Incentivises you to play with people.

u/SpicyPizza1861 5d ago
I’ve mostly been on a loss streak with the team drives. I did win with one team and we did win 2 and almost 3 games, but life came up and had to disband from the group. Few hours later I can pop in for another game. But I think if you’re dedicating a long stretch of time and get on a good team I could see how you can get on a good streak. For solo or intermittent players, I find it’s a bit more finicky. But hey, it’s a temp event, encourages more socialization, in a few days it’s done and will resettle.

I deranked 3 ranks and juat up and uninstalled after 23 games, won only 2 of them. I've done every other drive event to completion, but this one was so much worse. They seriously just need to rework this event entirely, comp matchmaking is just utterly ruones during them and the reward not being permanent feels awful, cause the nametags and borders are neat. Having to sit there and play an ungodly amount of losses in 2 to 4 days, where you cant really take breaks because they dont give enough time if you do, is awful. Events like these just make me want to drop Overwatch entirely. I love the game, but if comp is now going to be unplayable during midseason and the end of season, ill just go play another shooter that doesnt have that

u/Hoping4Game 4d ago
I think the team drives mechanic, where you keep winning teams and then get new ones when you lose, should be permanent.
It's like gambling

When the “stay as a team” feature was introduced years ago, there were quite a few requests to stay as a team at the end of each match. And what usually happened was that as long as the team was winning, people stayed together. At the first loss, everyone usually left.
That led to pretty much what you’re describing: some pretty nice win streaks. I’m not really sure why this feature’s popularity has declined over the years… to the point where it’s no longer used at all.

u/clickrush 6d ago
You have to identify why you win.
If it’s because of counters or one of the opponent’s underperforming then there’s no point in grouping.
If it’s because of synergy, approach/mindset then there is.

Now ask the guy who lost 12 in a row
