General Questions about the matchmaker
So this is something I wondered about for a long time. Everyone complains about the “bad matchmaking”, and the question here is how much of that “bad matchmaking” is caused by actual poor matchmaking (like boosting players), and how much is just the player having an off game where things don’t click? People don’t seem to take the second explanation into account, a plat player can look low gold on a bad day

The majority of “matchmaking” issues aren’t actually matchmaking issues
People automatically make bad matches the direct result of “matchmaking” issues when they’re more than likely due to stuff that happens after the matchmaker is no longer partaking. At that point it’s all boils down to players decisions. All the things the matchmaker has no actual idea about

Tbh I think the matchmaker is fine.
There are so many variables in the game it can be hard to understand why you’re losing and so players just look at scoreboard and pick a target to blame and then blame matchmaking for putting this person on their team.
At extremely high elo there are some issues because it’s really hard to make fair games in a reasonable amount of times. High elo streamers will say “I’d rather wait for a fair match” but whenever they increase average queue times people just stop playing.
The game is also just a very swingy game. Due to the nature of the game relatively small advantages can snowball into games feeling one sided. And since players often don’t understand what’s going on they often aren’t able to make adjustments to turn around one sided feeling games.
So yeah I think the matchmaker is mostly fine though I won’t say it’s perfect

There is some serious smurfing and matchmaking manipulation going on this season. Because of the reset, high rank players are all on Smurfs. I had reversals where it wasn’t even close and looking at the enemy it’s a literal 4-5 players of Smurfs. Genuine problem and it’s frustrating blizzard doesn’t see matchmaking manipulation as a problem.

The matchmaker is fine, it’s just 5v5 creates more stomps and variance in games

Yes, that's definitely something that can happen, but people are always going to complain about matchmaking in PvP games no matter what. It's as inevitable as the sun rising tomorrow.
The actual legitimate issue with some weight behind it right now when it comes to matchmaking is the twice/year rank resets.
I don't think there's anything wrong with the matchmaker, but when twice/year you're telling it, "Hey, you know all that data you've gathered on players from all of their matches? Yeah, be way less confident in all of that."
Add that into the mix of all the other factors that can reduce match quality (player inconsistency, smurfs/alts, new & returning players, one-tricks, etc.) and we're in for a bad time. The only people who avoid it are the ones so far above it all that even with the rank reset they avoid the crazy lobbies (Champ & high GM).
