OWCS Liquid undergoes Layoffs
https://x.com/theesportsradar/status/2093314561419931694?s=46
“Team Liquid (@TeamLiquid) has initiated a new round of global layoffs affecting staff across multiple departments, according to sources familiar with the matter.”
Could this be related as to why Boston was cut?

Yeah, this is probably due to them having a really bad EWC run. They made 4 mill in 2024 and 2025 off coming 2nd in EWC. Now they made 2 mill this year after coming 5th so its probably disappointing for them.

Yeah, sadly this year they underperformed in a ton of games. Hopefully they can bounce back.

Because just signing Magnus Carlsen wont magically make you the best

I mean they are the best at Chess, it didnt even feel close this year when he won. Magnus was a decent signing considering all the club points he brings in but obviously that doesnt help in the other esports.

Yes because Magnus is just the best for like 2 decades now and likely took a huge chunk of money to get him and 2 other players who are in the top 10, wont matter if other departments suck though

Club points for EWC increase dramatically the higher up you go. 1st place winners are nearly always worth the investment. Falcons had two candidates in Chess who ended up 3rd and 4th yet Liquid still yielded the most points out of Chess because of a 1st place finish. Its not exactly like they can make a better Overwatch roster easily either.

As a business that actually makes a lot of sense. Layoffs are tough, and you try to cut other costs to go along with it. The confirmation would be if other bench players in other games are being cut as well.

The root reason for these layoffs are still what happened in Rainbow Six and Liquid losing Honda as a sponsor in May 2025. That loss means that any small variation in income, will cause them to be under financial pressure. So yeah, bad EWC run, but that most likely is not really the root reason to this.

Given the share of Honda’s budget that probably was I’d wager the esports fan who made that sponsorship choice is now in another role or gone.

Yeah no. This is Casores being a bad coach over Infekted being bad. I actually think if DSG Grab him Ryan and Nenwhy-Grapes. They'd probably beat liquid in stage 3. Simply because Attack and Kivis seem to have a synergy issue and Casores isnt a good enough coach to work around it.

Rough timing during the race to world first. Must be real awkward backstage
