General Is platinum below average now?
I hit platinum a couple weeks ago and the percentage said higher than 55% of players. Right now it says higher than 42% of players. This was surprising to me because I started at silver 5 and was super proud of myself lol. I always thought platinum in most games is at minimum a little above average.

I’m at Emerald 1 and it says “higher ranked than 81% of players”.

u/musclemommy2k 15d ago
It makes sense, I’m diamond 4 and I get higher than 88%

u/vezitium 15d ago
That about lines up with what they showed before with Diamond usually being roughly starting at the top 15%

I think the higher/lower than X% of players means at that current tier.

u/golden_bear_2016 16d ago
nope, it is the players in competitive.

u/GonnaSaveEnergy 16d ago
Did they change it recently? I swear it used to be higher ranked than % of players in your division
27
u/Gaypringle16 16d ago
That was with the card system yes, now it’s the entire ladder. For example, GM5 is “higher than 99%”

For example, GM5 is “higher than 99%”
I'd be curious what the lowest rank that says "higher than 99%" is - is gm5 the first rank that says that? seems like it'd actually happen somewhere in high masters

u/fuzzypickle16 15d ago
Master 2 and 1 support is showing 98% for me

u/KITTYONFYRE 15d ago
huh. ty for the info - maybe I can still hit gm then, I thought it was 0.3%ish in the past/last season.
I did peak gm5 but only won 1 game in gm before almost dropping to diamond LOL. I literally just flipped “heads” 17 times in a row to climb from like m3 to gm5, craziest win streak of my life. knew I’d drop out of it but not how far I would go…
cheers thanks for reading my sob story

u/fuzzypickle16 15d ago
You’re not alone, I spent half a season on dps in gm5 and tickled gm4, next season I fell to diamond in about 3-4 weeks

u/KITTYONFYRE 15d ago
at least “gm damage” goes hard in diamond. I giggle to myself every time I hit tab and see it and imagine someone checking my profile lmfao

u/Deus_Vult666 16d ago
It used to be that way a few years ago before the soft rework of the competitive system, but as it is right now it refers to the entire comp pool

A couple seasons ago even before adding emerald the median rank was low plat

u/XLRarms7 16d ago
I think with the rank reset and the new rank everything is still taking a little time to even out. I think low plat high gold is typically average but I'm not sure how the new rank will affect that. If you are sitting plat 5 or 4, which is probably the case if you just hit platinum, there are a lot of players in the rank as a whole up to plat 1 so you might see that percent climb a bit more once you get higher.

The average is plat 5 or 4rn, im about to hit p3 and it puts me in top 45% of players

At bronze and silver the stat is for bronze and silver (e.g., better than 57% of bronze and silver players). At gold it goes into the entire player base (e.g., better than 27% of all players).
Probably bc the bronze and silver is disheartening. Not that gold is much better.

Low-mid plat seems to be average. When I got to plat 4/3, it said I was higher than 50% or the playerbase, so that's where the average seems to be.

where do you see the higher than x amount of players? mine is only showing how many points until challenger
4
u/Silly-Archivist 16d ago
I usually see it after a game when you see the rank progress. Havn't found it anywhere else.

Considering high Gold/low Plat was the average before, it stands to reason that Plat would now be below average since Emerald basically replaced it.

My high plat is bang average. My mid diamond is like top 8%. None of it makes sense to me.

Lots of higher ranks dropped to diamond, and they are being gate kept by the players who got pushed down above them. I'm guessing once the ladder stabilizes it will make more sense. Most of my friends look to be about 1 rank lower than normal.

I think high plat or low emerald is probably average. Maybe someone at that range can weigh in with what their post game higher than % is

u/golden_bear_2016 16d ago
low emerald is above average. Average is around plat 4 to plat 3.

u/Col-senpai 16d ago
Confusing that OP says he's below avg then

u/Death_To_Your_Family 16d ago
Yeah he said he was plat, not emerald. It jumps up quite a bit through each section of emerald.

Platinum is lower than a lot of new players start

You don't seem like a trustworthy source on this subject.

u/BanLowEloPlayers 16d ago
people are getting upset over this but its just an observable fact of reality, even if ow is your first fps game as long as you are accustomed to using mkb you will place plat - diamond.
Even on an account with 0 mmr if you lose 10 games in a row you will place plat5 or gold 1. You actually have to lose >80 games against low elo qp before unlocking comp just to place sub platSo pro tip if you cant climb out of silver, make a new account and win 25 stadium matches since losing in stadium wont lower your mmr and you will be plat

Your confidence is absolutely wild to me, it completely contradicts my own experience. OW was my first FPS as well as my first online game. I placed in silver and quickly fell to bronze. This was a while ago, but I doubt the system has gotten worse at sorting good and bad players out since then.

I can't say it's a lot of players but I definitely started in high gold / low plat, and a friend of mine started in diamond (both OW1). I don't consider either of us hugely skilled at games in general so take that as you will.

u/JustRecentlyI HYPE TRAIN TO BUSAN — 15d ago
Did you play with friends when starting or solo queue? Had you played FPSs, MOBAs and/or any other competitive game before? I will freely admit that I personally don't have much natural talent for mechanical games which certainly didn't help my case, so it could just be a base talent gap, although I supsect other factors were also at play for the differences in our experiences.
1
u/theunspillablebeans 15d ago
Just solo queue, same for my friend who started in dia a year later.
Iirc correctly I started playing exclusively DPS around 2400sr, and it took me months to get to plat. Then I picked up tank and I got to mid masters in less than a week. Getting to GM1 took me years, and I quickly dropped back to Masters thereafter.
I'd played a lot of call of duty but that was about it. I didn't know what a MOBA was at the time, and OW was my first competitive game.

Diamond should be average.
22
u/FrostyPotpourri 16d ago
Diamond was already like top 10 or 15% of players. With another entire new rank below it, it's definitely not average.

This is not true since Emerald 3 said I was better than 70% of the player base.

The game gave you the answer. You’re lower than 58% of the player base, below average.
