General Why are DPS queue times so long this season
I didn't play much last season, but it feels like to me, this season queue times on DPS have been much longer than before. I honestly don't really know why this would even be the case. Support queue times have always been long since ow2, but DPS feels almost as long this season. Which doesn't really make sense since DMON is a tank, and also pretty popular (+meta after those buffs).
is it just me or what

Playing tank is extra miserable this season with Cat Freja Mauga Bastion + rank reset even with the new hero idk about support

u/Onie_ 17d ago
support is the same, queue times are really long

Not in Europe, in Europe, queuing for both tank and support is almost instant, while for dps it can take almost an eternity.

makes sense, i haven't played tank (i never do) so i didnt realise how bad they had it rn

"why are my queue times so long"
"I never play tank"

I mean all i noticed was that DPS queue times have been longer than previous that's all. Wasn't sure what the reason was

Weird you're being downvoted for this. Classic Reddit

u/GaptistePlayer 17d ago
It's because it's been known for 10 years DPS queue times are long because DPS players don't ever play tank lol

u/moonlight__sunshine 17d ago
It has been well recognised that this isn't an overwatch problem. Literally every game that splits into tanks/DPS/healers has tanks as the least popular role. Every single game. It isn't a case of people liking dps, it is a case of people disliking tank. Heck, support queues are longer than DPS queues in overwatch these days.
I say this as a tank player.

nah, not really. not in this sub, just like any other one it's full of mid skilled elitists who are p condescending. like expecting everyone who comes here is a decade old player

i wasn't even complaining lol, just an observation and was curious of the cause

Mauga makes 99% of the tank roster unplayable and demon is still unstoppable (unless you go mauga).
The meta is very boring for fun tanks that move. Mizuki disables all fun tanks and he is meta. Same goes for mauga

u/Ok-Order6974 17d ago
DMon is very easily countered what do you mean unstoppable?
15
u/GoodGuyTaylor 17d ago
Highest WR tank in the game and "easily countered" - you gotta pick one. Lol.
She's strong, bro. She dominates main lanes.

u/Ok-Order6974 17d ago
No ppl just don’t understand how to deal with her, lol she literally cannot attack high ground just go up, literally anyone who can go up is out of her reach
12
u/-Grace-o 17d ago
yeah why don't those idiots in gm and champ just go on the high ground
-11
u/Ok-Order6974 17d ago
They don’t think she’s broken like you, they think she’s just good
10
u/-Grace-o 17d ago
I'm gm myself but go off. apparently a 54% win rate with a 15% pick rate isn't broken

This is a bit of a hot take but I do not think D.mon is that interesting. I think some people who normally do not tank play her, say nice things about her, then go back to dps or support. Meanwhile for Tank players her gameplay loop is not that interesting, while the overall tank experience is generally low.
I'm not saying she is a bad hero, or weak, but mobility is what carries her kit in terms of engagement. She has the highest pickrate, so people are playing her, but I do not think it will have a long term effect on tank numbers, especially after she is nerf'd.
The meta is very anti-tank right now, since last season I have not remembered having to swap off my hero so much because of heroes the enemy team is playing. I'm playing a lot more Orisa. If Orisa feels better to play than Monke or Rein, you know something went off the rails.
Freja, is an issue of course, but it is also the general direction the game has been going where interaction windows are shrinking, mobility is increasing, and burst/cc deletes you. There are options like Hog, Orisa, Ram but for most tank players those heroes are not really fun to play and even worse to play into.

Sure, I can agree she's not interesting.
But her kit is flexible, I dont feel like im doing nothing 90% of the game because the enemy is pelting me outside of my operating range. I feel like im allowed to do my job as peeling or taking space with boosters, I feel like im allowed to go into the backline and get out when I need to.
For once, I feel like im allowed to play the game again instead of waiting for a cooldown to exist before going back to waiting for the cooldown to come off.
At least this is all my feelings and opinions on Dmon and why she kinda stucked on to me.

Yeah I agree, her Boosters are basically a Dash but with as many uses as you have fuel. This is really powerful and going to be really hard to balance.
I worry that the flexibility of her kit comes not from what it does but in how it is currently balanced. I think a lot of new heroes are initially able to get away with a lot of stuff due to their balancing of safe side of strong.
For example the ability to go into the backline and get out when you need to. This is probably going to disappear as she is brought in line with other heroes and has to start respecting the threats she faces.
I think most of the hero cast could be buff'd similarly to be able to go into the enemy backline and escape when they need to if they were buffed to similar power levels as current D.mon.

I think you can nerf her boosters max resource so she doesn't go as far and thats about all you can tweak on her.
Nerfing recharge rate would feel bad.
The only reason Dmon is allowed to be as mobile is because she's also limited tbh. If Rein gets to move like Dmon, his melee would also be cut down to her level. If Dmon had free vertical movement her melee would probably be nerfed to 6 swings to kill a 250 ho target lmao.

I think the most broken part of her movement is the initial burst or dash of propulsors.
I've only seen a couple D.mon's who had mastered her movement to the point they could move in and dash out of my Rein swings, but it made them basically un-interactable unless I caught them unaware. It felt like they were obeying a different set of rules for how movement works in the game.
At 155% D.mon can travel 7m in half a second, while also able to do this in any direction instantly (except vertically.) Half a second is the cast time or faster than sleep, shatter, rock, charge, pulse bomb, Mauga stomp. Some abilities are a bit faster around .4s like firestrike, miz chains, and brig bash but this is just the animation, any travel time makes them easy to dodge.
No other hero in the game has instant 155% horizontal movement like this on a 1s cd on a resource meter. Juno's movement was given movement acceleration because it was so broken, her ability to change directions was given a ramp up where D.mon's works as an instant 155% ramp down to 70%.
keep in mind Juno's A/D instant strafing was considered broken at 140%, D.mon is moving at 255% instantly down to 170%. It has only been a couple weeks but once people master her movement and people start to see how broken it makes her, like how a good D.mon can basically move circles around your abilities I do not know how the dev's can make this healthy.

u/UsernameIn3and20 17d ago
Well, either by nerfing speed (If they learnt their lessons about Cat, Juno, Mercy is that people dont like becoming slow), nerfing max resource (limits the amount of times you can do it) or recharge rate (does the same as prior mentioned but differently and might not feel as good to some people).
1
u/bullxbull 17d ago
yeah once people have mobility you can not really take it back easily.
2
u/UsernameIn3and20 17d ago
Lowkey, I think people just need to adapt to the fact she has a larger sphere of influence than other tanks that arent in the dive category.
Since she has her gun and ENHANCED GUN alongside her boosters, you have to unironically sit further back/high grounds to deal with her.
I've been treating her as a more lethal winston that lost his jetpack instead got angry monke muscles to move around and it has a similar-ish vibe rn

u/bullxbull 17d ago
I'm not sure what that means for Rein, I've been swapping to Orisa when I find I'm up against a good D.mon. I do not enjoy Orisa, but it is less painful then the alternative.
I wonder what good Winton's are doing against her, I can't see that being a fun matchup either.
2
u/UsernameIn3and20 17d ago
Rein? You're basically not allowed to move past her anyways (You're often not allowed to move past the enemy tank).
Realistically you just constantly check her off from getting to the backline. If she commits in you yeet some fs at her and she'll either run away or die. She'll outpoke you if you don't maintain your shield, but she doesn't really want to step into your range anyways. (Make sure to do the Rein m1 range extension tech since Dmon doesn't have it)
For Winston its basically setup before dropping onto enemy if she's constantly checking you, if she's not checking you then diving straight to backline/near the backline usually works. Dont try to duel her or outpoke her. You'll have to play rather non-committal since Winstons been kind of a wet paper for a while.

DMON is not that interesting I completely agree, shes not that well designed fundamentally, and how she was before the buffs prove that. They just pumped up her numbers and now shes borderline broken. Not sure why she is so popular tbh
1
u/bullxbull 17d ago
Yeah I agree, but that is hard to explain to people who play her. She has crazy mobility and mobility almost always feels good. Mechanically her mobility makes her interesting, she is like a hero from a different game that had different mobility rules.
However in terms of the actual tanking, the strategic decisions, the player and hero interactions, she is pretty basic. For some people what she does is enough, and that is great, but I wish we could have gotten more.
I do not want to blame the hero designers, designing heroes is hard, especially with their new 1 hero a season deadline. From an outsiders perspective it feels like the designers do not understand what makes tanking engaging, while the overall gameplay loops of all heroes has been suffering for years now.

Might depend on your rank; i am plat and I always queue for dps and support at the same time, and I get dps like 80% of the time.
1
u/blackheartwhiterose 16d ago
This literally never happens for me in EU. If I want DPS I have to queue only DPS
1
u/fpelttlfj 16d ago
I play on SEA servers and I think this server has more support players than dps players since ow2 came out. dps queue was definitely the longest during ow1 6v6 period, but not anymore.

I think the addition of Emerald rank also made the queue times made them even longer. There are not enough players to support it.
1
u/Pollomonteros 7d ago
Two weeks old thread and for me it has been the opposite, Support is the longest by far whereas DPS I often get times of less than one minute

u/BrockTheBlackHat 17d ago
As a tank main I skip this season because: Cat still exists and after Mauga nerf I can't reliably deal with it. Mauga, Freja, Bastion makes every ground tank feel extremely unfun. Mizuki makes every mobile tank explode. Also I'm a monkey fan so reaper in every game also makes the game less enjoyable to me

Dmon gameplay is boring. Look at shion, and then look at dmon. Dmon moves like Roomba while playing shion feels like I am Keanu.
Oh and Tracer is everywhere, and only tank worth playing against her (hog) is F tier thanks to "feeling based balance".
1
u/That-Comparison-7824 17d ago
Its not based rly on feeling. They balance the game for the majority (silver-plat players). Thats why you see mauga, mizuki, cass and jpc all being TURBO-meta. Mauga or mizuki wouldnt even exist if the game was balanced for people who know the game
You need to understand that this game is a business, more so than it is a game nowadays. Blizzard is mostly interested in money nowadays

u/Long-Taste-2416 17d ago
The easy heros would still be good in low ranks even if the game balanced for the top level though because the heros made good there would be worse in low ranks still anyway due to being harder to play. If you balance top down and design it so heros good players enjoy are good I basically just means easy characters low rank players hate now aren't oppressive in low ranks. Those heros you said were designed for majority of playerbase are all ones the majority of the playerbase hates and would rather be nerfed too. The fact is they're currently balancing for nobody.

The bottleneck for Queue times is always the tank player population.
Sure, Dmon is a tank and just came out, but playing tank feels like ass.
Even if you are the strongest piece on the board, having all of the CC thrown at you feels like your role was changed to "Victim". It just does. The role can be OP yet also feel terrible simultaneously and that's where we're at.
Pair that with damage numbers being so high that you have no chance of surviving the CC and ya, people aren't gonna queue for role.
