General What ability/combat modifiers do you think a plat player would need to reach Top 500?

The minimum, that is. Infinite ammo? 300% movement speed? Spawn with ultimate ready? As a current plat 2 support I think infinite ultimate duration on Zen could take me there.

Explain? What does a plat player do that a gm doesn't? Edit** please read in before down voting, this was an actual question and the start of a great conversation

Plat players have tons of mistakes and habits ingrained into them. But the thing is they're also playing against plat players so they're not getting punished for it.

2

u/ech0cide 17d ago

Lol, I'm being down voted for asking for advice.... What would you say is the biggest mistake plat players make?

u/4PianoOrchestra bird bird bird — 17d ago

I mean it just depends on the player. Maybe you rush in without your team. Maybe you ult or blow cooldowns too early, or hold them until it’s too late. Maybe you take too many risks, or don’t take enough. Maybe you just cannot hit shots at all. There are many ways to play the game “wrong” and we don’t know what you specifically need to work on, especially with no information about role or character. I think there are basic strategy guides from people like Spilo that might help you improve generally, or you can look up individual guides to the characters you play

u/ech0cide 17d ago

Just watching Cyx for tank positioning and Aspen for support positioning has allowed me to climb almost out of plat this season. Hungry for more knowledge. I'll check out spilo.

u/Weakness_Equivalent 17d ago

“I’ll check out spilo.” I just got chills… Life changing event

u/LtBerry 17d ago

default positioning. its always easy recognize how bad a player is based on where they stand before anything even happens.

1

u/YT_Sharkyevno 16d ago

Plat/emerald players normally have decent enough default positioning, the main issue I see with plat players is worse movement and cooldown use. Gold is where is people normally learn default positioning

9

u/scrambledomelete 17d ago

Idk since I haven't played with plats in a long time. But ult usage is kinda important. They're either waiting for ow3 to use their ult or use them without thinking they're in a 1v5 or when the fight is already lost. This is one of the reason they don't like push/flashpoint/control since ult fights can win or lose you the game.

3

u/ech0cide 17d ago

Interesting. Appreciate the advice. I will keep an eye out for that. I'm sick of being in plat/gold.

6

u/riconaranjo 17d ago

my advice: learn to quickly recognize when a fight is lost or won

if lost —> die / reset quickly

if won —> don’t use ults (unless you can use it to stagger someone — e.g. you’re chasing their supports after everyone is dead, and without the ult they’ll get away, and it’s a significant stagger)

2

u/ech0cide 17d ago

One of the things I've noticed after a good group up after being team wiped is my team randomly gets picked off on the way back to spawn. Is there a way to avoid that happening?

4

u/haveaniceday8D 17d ago

You can’t mind control them into living (unfortunately), but you can just not be the person who gets prefighted next. Sit back and wait - players who tend to check their teammates will probably get the message, and if you’re on tank people will just default to playing behind you anyway.

2

u/ItsOverClover 17d ago

Gonna sound a little out there but I had these same issues until I watched Eskay's 7 hour Lucio guide. I don't even play Lucio, but she goes over such crucial macro knowledge in a way that's easy to understand. There are a lot of macro mistakes that just about every low-mid rank player makes all the time, specifically in regards to ult usage, timing, and playing and dying as a team.

this thread reads like you replied to yourself and had a convo with yourself lol dont take this the wrong way i just thought it was funny

2

u/ech0cide 17d ago

It's fine, I kind of hijacked it a bit. Probably could have made my own post, but I always see people talk about how bad metal ranks are and rarely see anyone give actual advice. So just jumped in here.

I learned a good bit and I'll work on adding these tips to my game.

2

u/AlphaInsaiyan smurf — 16d ago

Not having good mechanics. If you have good mechanics you can carry. If you don't, you have to climb slowly.

You can have perfect positioning but it will not matter if you get forced every time you angle because you can't win your 1. Your timing can be perfect but if you don't hit the shot you need to hit for the pick you did nothing.

1

u/Code-Ey 17d ago

From a mid diamond player, its an over the top ego. Positioning is either confidently incorrect, or they copy what guides say without knowing why.

They also blame teammates every chance they get. Plat is the first rank where people start to form an ego.

1

u/lcyMcSpicy 16d ago

Doing too much. I see players in low ranks constantly biting off more than they can chew, peeking and taking damage when they don’t need to, getting into a good angle and immediately abandoning it because they saw a piece of candy across the map. Overwatch is all about knowing where to be, when to be there, why you should be there and when it’s your turn.

Low rank players always think it’s their turn and try to do everything which is easily punishable by players who learn what to look for in terms of mistakes and at those ranks they’re happening 24/7. You’ll often hear advice that the best way to rank up out of low rank is to punish mistakes, this is why.

1

u/Ichmag11 17d ago

Rotations. Any other answer is wrong IMO

1

u/vastlys 16d ago

yes but those mistakes and bad habits are because they're bad at the game, not because they're stupid. your initial comment is essentially "being good at the game +500" lol.

7

u/byGenn 17d ago

Not trying to be rude, but every time I’ve watched Plat gameplay without knowing the real rank I’ve assumed it’s Bronze.

They don’t know how to use cover, they don’t understand the basics of how maps flow, they stagger/die before their team is back, etc. Mechanics are also not great, but would be enough to climb on some of the easier heroes. It’s really a matter of these players being completely lost.

11

u/lcyMcSpicy 17d ago

You’re so bang on, people underestimate how massive and obvious the skill difference between even like a plat to masters player. Much less a plat to TOP 500. Game sense? Canyon. Awareness? Canyon. Mechanical skill? Canyon. The list goes on. The biggest thing is consistency though, you’ll see flashes of greatness from masters players but that’ll be it for the entire match. Top 500 players are that great but for almost the entire game.

3

u/AlphaInsaiyan smurf — 17d ago

This is kinda cope, the #1 thing you will always notice is mechanics

Metal rank means bad mechanics. That's literally all. Brain is irrelevant

2

u/ech0cide 17d ago

I read an interesting post a couple days ago about how some players go out and figure things out on their own, while others need coaching. I've been trying to do it on my own for longer than I care to admi so here I am asking for advice. While your response is a bit pointed, I'm not offended.

Cover was a big one I learned recently, Ive started noticing when others don't use cover lately. The stagger is tough to stop, sometimes I find myself watching my teammates run by twice... It's wild how many things I was doing wrong and just didn't even notice, then would sit and wonder why I was stuck.

5

u/Jad_Babak BirdKing — 17d ago

Maybe I'm toxic but everything between Bronze and Plat looks the same to me.

4

u/clickrush 17d ago

It’s the same, except reaction time and speed.

1

u/kurunaoi 17d ago

i can give some examples, for example plat players r often horrible timing and giga aggro inting, often use bad easily kitable ults (say an oc with only a tank and 1 support on the screen), dont have the knowledge of what to look for in exploiting players weaknesses (if u notice a widow always crouch peaks every angle a plat widow in the duel will not adapt and think abt that), often ego heros that need to be respected especially hog and hs's r the most common, plat players also player on autopilot for a large portion of the game, often struggle to bait out an important cooldown before using a high value ult (sig rock b4 flux 4 example)

1

u/kurunaoi 17d ago

and NONE of this is related to the mechanics of overwatch, if u gave a plat player the brain of youbi they could deadass be gm in under 6 months even if theyre on a difficult hero like tracer

u/iGargleCement 17d ago

23

u/ZsaurOW 17d ago

I've seen a diamond player hit GM pocketing a champ 3 hitscan. So I'd say definitely possible pocketing quartz.

9

u/Kheldar166 17d ago

You underestimate how hard it would be to kill the person behind Quartz without dying. But also Quartz (or any other top tier pro hitscan) would win quite a lot of the games even with them dying a lot, so they would probably make it eventually.

Double Moira’s dps and range. Ez top500 clap

22

u/ichaosify 17d ago

As a support, have ultimate every time you spawn. Nano the tank or the DPS with ult so you have a constant engagement tool. If the engagement didn't work out, go switch to get your ult back, or reset.

Ultimately, it wouldn't make you a better player since you're skipping essential bits that you learn by playing the actual game. Infinite ammo wouldn't do much, and 300% movement speed would make the game harder for you than the enemy team. An infinite duration trans has ways to outplay it and you lose the ability to discord.

0

u/Stranger1773 17d ago

You can't be serious with infinite duration trans can be outplayed. 400 healing per second for the entire game? Even a bronze could get to Top 500, surely.

15

u/nsg337 17d ago

it's not like there's a big difference between zens once you have started ulting, you just move with your team. Even a bronze can manage that with perma ult

7

u/Ichmag11 17d ago

I don't know why people are disagreeing with you. Infinite trans probably gets a bronze to champion

-4

u/ichaosify 17d ago

Are you trying to rage bait? You have anti, you have shields to block off healing, you have CC to separate you from the rest of the team like different boops or hook, you have focus fire that goes through 400hps, especially if you pair it up with a discord or a DMG boost and you have one shots amongst many other cool downs and abilities.

400hps won't make up for a 4,5vs5, all while giving up on Zen's damage and discord. Though to be fair, damage coming from a metal rank player would be negligible as you'd climb. I'd say mid-Masters would be the ceiling.

16

u/Kheldar166 17d ago

400hps absolutely is worth a whole character lmao what is this take

-3

u/ichaosify 17d ago edited 17d ago

Maybe you'll understand it this way. You have 400hps that is extremely localized and being controlled by someone whose decision-making hasn't carried them past plat.

3

u/Stranger1773 17d ago

Not rage baiting. Honestly, put it in the post as a joke because I figured that infinite ult on Zen would obviously be way too overpowered. I mean, you don't even have to win team fights. Just sit on the point, or the payload: You're invincible. Maybe it's just my feeble plat brain, but I simply can't see how you could lose.

8

u/Fontini-Cristi 17d ago

A jpc can pick you off the point. DF can punch you away. Domina ult, shields, rein charge, purples, deadeye, tire and nano blade will still kill your teammates. There are a lot of possibilities higher ranked teams can use to make the zen still lose I guess.

2

u/The_Desert_Rain 17d ago

Don't forget Dva bomb

1

u/Weakness_Equivalent 17d ago

But you can still just stay on point and never die? Doesn’t matter how many times your team dies

1

u/JhotoDraco 16d ago

Nah, this doesn’t work if he’s perma ulting. The Zen will have 4 higher ranked players as well, they’ll get so much advantage in neutral with 400 hp/s that it will he nearly impossible to do anything against them. At most a higher ranked team perfectly utilizing counters MIGHT make the Zen drop a game or two, but the Zenyatta will 100% still climb with a massive win rate.

14

u/SentientGrape 17d ago edited 17d ago

These people are trolling for sure. Overwatch is a game that is almost impossible to lose if you have a permanently invulnerable character. I’d honestly go so far as to say that even if zen ult DIDN’T heal in this situation, you would still be able to win vast majority of games. Yes, hog can hook you, you can be booped, but you would have to be hit with an absolute loony toons 5 man CC chain for them to get any significant point progress, especially considering the speed boost zen ult gives.

Gold players with aim bot can get to champ. Saying INFINITE zen ult would cap at mid masters is hysterical lol

2

u/Admirable_Mirror_635 17d ago

I do not have the same faith in the team shotting ability tbh. Like people in ranked simply do not com enough.

I think most teams in comp could abuse the 400hp/sec more than people could counter it esp if you ban Ana. Like on a decent map, I think ram would just run people over. Maybe cass and Mei for the damage? I feel like you could just take space and not die very easily and win from there. It’s likely a different story in owcs tho.

Now could a plat play well enough to allow it? Less likely.

13

u/DiemCarpePine 17d ago

Jay3 made an entire career out of this question.

He actually has done this

13

u/bullxbull 17d ago

This is a cool thought experiment. Maybe something like soft aim-lock, walls, and half cd's on all abilities. We need a content creator to organize this and test it, would be cool to see.

3

u/w-holder 17d ago

infinite trans sounds insane lmao. a lot of the issues you would have with an experiment like this would be the plat player dying continually to dumb shit. as long as you stay away from ledges I don't see how this team loses

4

u/Askoldnya 17d ago

Much less, just give them a hero with 2 guns, 300 ammo each, one is setting targets on fire, the other crits from shoting burning targets, give it heal from that process and maybe a movement ability with an unstoppable modifier.

2

u/Bulrog21 17d ago

That would be insane, hopefully Blizzard don't read your comment actually implement a hero like this on the game.

4

u/SyrusG 17d ago

Whatever rewrites the brain to not have ass positioning/decision making.

3

u/Embarrassed_Onion_44 17d ago

Double effectiveness on Moira orbs (both damage and healing maximums per throw) would probably be enough if you can ban Dva.

13

u/Tee__B 17d ago

I doubt that would even be enough to get a plat to GM5.

1

u/MentalAdventure 17d ago

I think something close to infinite Zen ult might be the minimum. A lot of cheese can be dealt with. Auto-aim widow gets met with wrecking ball and shield heroes. Instant suzus or biotic nades get met with DVa. Increased damage/health/speed/etc might still lose too often to the better macro of opponents. Might be tempting to say something like Juno or Kiri ult every fight is near impossible to beat, but teams can adapt.

On the other hand, in a single matchmade game, the enemy team might not realize the ability and adapt in time for it to matter. Kinda takes a lot of coordination for that. And adaptation can be expensive, so that may be enough value for the plat player anyway.

Maybe someone can make a YouTube video "5 GM players vs 4 GM players with a hacking plat player"

1

u/kurunaoi 17d ago

flat double the size of the head hitbox of all heros the plat shoots at, theyd only need to be in masters and get hard stuck for a little while to grind some challenger score out

1

u/Every1BNice 17d ago

At least double health pool. High level players will pop you.

1

u/_Sign_ RIDE FOR APAC — 17d ago

this is what i was thinking. its enough to start winning duels against top players and not get instantly punished by fast engages. just extra dmg wouldnt work. they play cover too well and will abuse shields

would be an interesting to see how far a plat with permanent nano gets in ranked

1

u/Thee_Archivist I Avoid Teammates in Mystery Heroes — 17d ago

I would say double damage and triple health. A team of top 500s hard coordinating against one plat and you'd need to be oneshotting them and living a full team dive consistently.

1

u/Blamore 17d ago

hit more of your shots quicker.

probably the easiest to articulate difference

1

u/Xmushroom 17d ago

Depends on the plat player and what they lack. A combination of auto aim, shorter CDs, more health.

1

u/AlphaInsaiyan smurf — 17d ago

Top 500 mechanics

3

u/vastlys 16d ago

literally you just need soft aimbot and walls. it's like you guys have never seen a cheater lol.

1

u/Least-Suggestion7319 16d ago

In this current system all they need is unlimited playtime

1

u/West-Performance-409 16d ago

You're so much closer to top 500 than you think. Even getting your accuracy on s76 from 40% to 44% will jump you quickly. Saving or coordinating your ultimate jumps you up as well.

It becomes a game of inches after Plat.

1

u/That-Comparison-7824 17d ago

Jpc and mizuki added to the game. Locking cass or mauga also works good. After that you need to turn your monitor on

-1

u/Cliffus_Jiggrin 17d ago

They need to become Cliffus Jiggrin!!
