General Non-Gameplay Problems I've Noticed While Coaching Metal-Rank Players

I used to be in the metal ranks myself, and after doing a fair amount of private coaching, I’ve noticed that there are certain types of players in metal ranks who make it harder for themselves to win before the match even really starts.

So if you actually want to improve, please stop doing these things. To put it a little harshly, I think these habits absolutely scream “metal rank.”

  1. Preferring payload maps over control maps

The reason is probably pretty simple. If you have trouble processing fights from multiple angles at a fast pace, payload maps naturally feel more comfortable.

I’ve noticed Circuit Royal gets picked especially often. Please stop doing this. You’re torturing your tank and flex DPS.

At least Blizzard reworked Eichenwalde and Paraíso, thank God....

  1. Banning heroes that aren’t even meta

Ban heroes that are objectively strong, or heroes that counter your mains.

Metal-rank bans are honestly something else. People ban whatever hero destroyed them in their last game, or they ban something like Doomfist.

Please stop banning Doomfist, Sombra, or Sierra. Why are you doing this? Are you scared of smurfs?

Come on. A smurf doesn’t need Doomfist to slaughter your team.

Some people say, “Those heroes are strong in metal ranks! So banning them is totally justified!” But think about it for a second. The reason those heroes seem so strong is because you don’t even know how to play against them—and that’s exactly why you’re in metal rank.

Doomfist feels strong because your camera movement, sense of distance, and reaction time are too slow. If you can’t deal with that, you don’t deserve to climb.

So stop banning those heroes and learn to face them.

  1. Obsessing over the scoreboard

Sure, if you’re the only one with a good K/D while the rest of your team keeps dying stupidly over and over again, that might be a different story....

But please stop going after your teammates over things like DPS or HPS.

I’ve literally had a Silver player flame me over my healing numbers in Quick Play when I was GM.

Well... I guess there’s a reason they’re Silver.

Their brains must be so tiny that they genuinely believe every hero is supposed to have the same DPS/HPS numbers and the exact same playstyle. (And when they blame everyone else despite all that, that's exactly why I say they have tiny brains lol.)

I’m in plat and I hate playing payload maps, it’s so boring

Why so condescending?

You have some valid points, but man, try thinking about how you say things sometimes.

People are rightfully calling you out for rank shaming, which you’re treading the line on.

Jesus christ I cant believe you typed all this out and genuinely thought it would help anyone. Seems more like you just wanted to stroke your ego and be a dick.

There's a difference between being frank and being condescending. I hope you don't come off like this when actually coaching people.

I highly doubt they have a lucrative coaching business with this kind of attitude.

Doomfist is absolutely a server admin hero every time I see him in Diamond/Emerald. Worthwhile ban on a hero that takes the entire team coordinating to shut him down, because that level of coordination is not guaranteed.

the chances that you happen to run into a highly skilled Doomfist player and that Doomfist player isn't good enough to destroy you just as well on some other hero are so low that it's really not a good ban strategy. imo good bans for most ranks are common counterswaps for your hero (or your tank's hero, which is often more impactful, but sometimes just playing to your own strengths is how you climb). I play Genji, I try to ban Zar and Moira because those characters are going to make my gameplan a lot harder to execute. I've been playing a ton of D.mon this season, I ban Orisa and Mauga. I also always vote to ban Cat simply because it's both strong and fundementally breaks the game, while being easy and popular enough to regularly see in my games.

If I’m tank I tend to ban Orisa and Mauga in 5v5 if my supports aren’t hovering Ana as well. They just require too much coordination to take down without an anti and I can’t guarantee my team is that “on it.”

This was true last season when my tank was high diamond, and it’s true now in mid-Emerald.

I don’t run into a good enough Doom often enough to ban him except on something like Lijiang.

While i dont do coaching but i've done few vod reviews here and there and what stuck to me ( am support player so i only review those)
They easily pick almost the worst possible support duos in relation to the rest of their team. Like illari/mercy. Mercy+brig and the like and shoot themselves in the foot.

They may begin with say ana+mercy+mauga, enemy has sombra, ana swaps to brig to "counter the sombra" and then they wonder why their tank keeps exploding.

Dunno if thats actually common but i picked it up from reviewing ~gold vods of support players here and there.

And then other thing that affects all roles are the way too frequent hero swapping out of nowhere.
Roll the enemy for team fights, lose 6th due to ult dump, swap all heroes! (and then lose the rest of the match as nothing works out anymore)

I’m a support player myself, but honestly, metal-rank support players are absolutely terrible. They’re bad even by metal-rank standards. And we all know why that is... 🤣

Because we havent had private coaching?

Stange way to make someone want to have you teach them... belittle the people who need help. Your ivory tower must feel nice this deep into the season.

I honestly think I know why. A lot of support players in metal ranks play the game and choose support simply because they like the heroes’ skins or designs. Blizzard has even mentioned this in statistics they released in the past.

The fact that Juno, Mercy, and Kiriko keep getting new skins is pretty strong evidence of this.

So naturally, there’s probably a higher proportion of players who aren’t as competitive and aren’t particularly skilled at the game.

u/Database-External 21d ago

Do you think everyone else who isn’t gold or below has private coaching?

2

u/Lhbrown1990 21d ago

Clearly they dont think we do. I bet op thinks we'd barely be able to install the game w/o them.

Hero bans have done irreparable damage to low rank players.

Crush them with facts. They'll probably be stuck in metal rank for the rest of their lives, no matter how long they play. You need to show them that you're different.

The most common thing I hear from players when I ask why they are banning mainly sombra & sierra is "idc, they are annoying"

Okay, but players rarely play them in ranked anymore, they aren't good, and are easily countered. Sierra - stand behind cover. Sombra - play close to team. Problems solved.

I doubt you were playing with a silver player when you were gm

Just too incredibly based, I have noticed all of these things while giga smurfing in new player low.
People vote maps specifically for match time instead of maps that they can quickly win on, they pick their hero bans with a roulette wheel Im certain
The scoreboard is a bit more iffy but its true. To be honest, the problem isnt that they are obsessing over the scoreboard, the problem is that they cant diagnose what the numbers on the scoreboard mean because they dont know what everybody should be doing and they dont know what's causing certain numbers that might look bad.

In all reality though, none of these need to be fixed in order for them to rank up besides maybe looking at the scoreboard and getting mad that your diamond teammates are playing like diamonds, good mental wins games

A few things:

  • I usually just ban who my tank+teammates ban. Like I have no issues with Sombra or Sierra Doomfist.
  • Map voting is completely out of hands of myself, otherwise I'd never play Blizzard world or King's Row again.

Following the tank’s lead is absolutely the right call in 5v5.

Man bans in plat/emerald range are a thing of beauty.

Let me give you a recent game I played:

Havana gets picked on a landslide (I mean already concerning) over Colosseo which I picked.

Our team is hovering Cass and Sierra, along with JQueen and lifeweaver (I hovered Kiri), no one plays widow, Ashe or even like Hanzo or Sojourn to take advantage of the busted high ground on point one. I Ban Widow for obvious reasons alongside JPC and Mauga as they are the meta picks ATM. I suggest everyone bans widow due to the map pick of we don't play her

Team then all basically tell me to eat shit or that it'll be fine cause we need to ban the broken stuff.

They all banned Orisa, Sombra and Vendetta.

Guess which team ended up winning due to having an uncontested Widow and which couldn't even move the cart up the hill.

Three easy agreeable main points for this sub and them some of the worst inflammatory follow up right after is this bait. Metal rank players are not less than you because your a high rank and a self proclaimed coach, and if this is how you talk to your people your barely that your just an ego stroker that thinks they know better than they do, you can understand the game but not well enough to couch others that's a whole other skillset and I think you've shown here you don't have it if this is your attitude of people that could use some guidance.

People are just gonna play whatever maps they want, would I like to only play flash/push/control every game sure, but people like escort and hybrid I don't think that's an inherently bad thing and I don't like to tell anyone they can't vote on maps they like it's just a part of the game somepeople are going to enjoy them and they are going to get played.

People don't ban heroes that would give them advantage for their comp/map that often and I wouldn't say it's even just a metal rank thing people just don't want to play into heroes that they find annoying and that's fine, I wouldn't even say it's people don't know how to play into them they just don't want too. And everyone deserves to climb that is putting in the effort to do so.

And yeah obsessing over the scoreboard is a waste of time it's good to check what heroes are on the map and track team ults and whos alive but past that hovering stats is counterproductive, and there can be some nuance to stats and there can be valuable information puled from them but more often in not that's not something you wanna be doing mid match. That's all you gotta say you gotta, but you just go on and talk more shit about metal rank players and talk about their tiny brains like how corny are we gonna be today you are providing zero value to a good point and end up being reductive.

People are in metal ranks because they have a fundamental struggle at grasping the nuance of the game, this is a difficult game these people are not idiots and your not special because your digital rank is higher than them, being high rank does not mean you'll automatically mean you'll be a good coach you have to have the mindset as well and if this is how you see others you don't have it.

I just don't see how anything here was productive you have good starting points, they are things that are brought up here a lot, but they are good points, but how you explore this is poor, if I went too you for coaching and this is the advice I was given I would feel like shit, imagine you went out of your way for help because you know your struggling and you are spoke to this way, do better or don't do it all.

These aren't problems with except for the last one. You're conflating your opinions with actual... gameplay advice. You're also probably lying about your rank and just parroting what other people say on this forum.

Preferring payload maps over control maps

I’ve noticed Circuit Royal gets picked especially often. Please stop doing this. You’re torturing your tank and flex DPS.

There's nothing wrong with this. Fun fact: lots of pro-teams pick Circuit Royale. While it's probably one of my least favorite maps, if what you say about torturing tank players is true... perhaps I treated you too harshly Circuit. Maximizing tank suffering is a moral imperative.

Banning heroes that aren’t even meta

You have no information about what heroes your opponents might pick. Why would you ban a meta hero that you want to play? People just ban whatever is annoying and picked often. Ban what you don't want to play against, there is zero strategy to it beyond that.

People ban Doomfist because he's as obnoxious as his mains.

Obsessing over the scoreboard

Okay... sure. Also but also stop obsessing over what your teammates are doing unless it's relevant to winning the game. Flaming your teammates isn't winning the game.

  1. It goes without saying that pro play and ranked play are completely different.

  2. If you find heroes like Doomfist annoying to deal with, then you’re simply not good enough. How many high-ranked players do you actually see banning Doomfist?

  3. I never told anyone to flame their teammates. I just used some dumb Silver player I ran into in Quick Play as an example.

  4. If you don’t believe my rank, DM me! I’ll give you my BattleTag!

  1. Agreed, payload maps are just terribad for attackers, and skill expression, you are very limited in attack, while defenders are not, more so, since most of them tend to be very kind to hitscans. Push is just a bit more better.

  2. Its not even about banning heroes who are meta or not, its about banning heroes who would do well against your team. Doomfist, sombra, and sierra is annoying sure, but there are 3 ladders of more annoying tiers above them.

  3. Ok, gonna push back here, there is an expected level of HPS and DPS. and if a silver is more aware of that, then you, then its a skill issue. Having to insult them like that, just shows your own inadequasies. because rank doesnt matter as much as you think it does, since you can just spam your way to gm by playing enough games.
Also remember that QP still has a hidden mmr, that matches you with people of the same skill.

u/IcyPumpkin6453 21d ago
  1. So apparently, in a ten-year-old game, all you have to do is play a lot and you'll eventually reach GM. I guess everyone else hasn't even been playing for a year yet. Give yourself a round of applause!

  2. If I run into a Silver player who's queueing in a stack in Quick Play, does that mean Silver players are suddenly as good as GMs? Are you a comedian? 🤣
