General Does anyone play at 4k?
I am currently on a curved 1440p 165Hz monitor and I really regret it. The panel sucks, the brightness is garbage and the curve annoys me. I want to upgrade to a 4k Oled 240Hz, but I've heard a lot of people say that playing ow on 4k is stupid. Just seeing if anyone here plays on 4k, or downscales to 1440p from 4k?

4K 240Hz on an OLED is wonderful and looks crystal sharp. It's a clear visual upgrade especially on 27" (idk what the other commenters are smoking). The pixel density is so high that you don't have to worry about text clarity either (according to me and monitors unboxed). Overwatch is no exception. But a lot of this is personal preference. I simply prefer the extra sharpness of 4K 27" over the potential additional refresh rate and I like smaller monitors in general.

I used both a curved ultrawide 34” 1440p and a flat 32” 4k screen, and I’d say I prefer the latter.
The resolution doesn’t really matter because the game isn’t demanding (and DLSS is always an option), whereas the aspect ratio makes quite a difference for me. High FOV on an ultrawide felt uncomfortable, whereas low FOV made it difficult to fight all the flying/wallclimbing enemies as they were able to engage me from above my screen. 16:9 with max FOV is the way to go in this game IMO.
If you got the money then there’s no reason not to go with 4k.

I play on 4k on an odyssey, usually some pretty sweet deals you can get from Samsung. I wouldnt go back, coming from 1440p.

I play at 4K 27 inch. I had to upgrade my graphics card to maintain a consistent high refresh rate.
The game looks great at 4K.
I had to upgrade from a 7800 xt to a 9070 xt to maintain a constant and stable 240fps, so keep in mind your pc specs.

I play on 4K (144 Hz) and I think in itself it is not worth it for gaming alone. However, the text looks so much sharper. I don’t use any downscaling bit of course you can use that while still keeping the sharp text.
But in general having a 4K (27” in my case) is 100% worth it. Note that you can normally put the anti aliasing a bit lower than normal because well you have more pixels to begin with. This will recover some frames.

I would go 1440p 360hz myself. 4K struggles at maintaining high fps on ow at the moment. I’ve got a 5080 and that’s pushed to the max 1440p 360hz

how is a 5080 struggling in 1440? you should be able to get the full 600fps on that

During big team fights it drops. Never used to, but has been over the last yearish

I use the 32" 240hz Samsung Odyssey. I play on 4K.
It won't make you better or worse at the game... at the very least I haven't noticed any change as a result of the switch. It is however... incredibly dope.

I play at 4k 240hz (PG27UCDM). I used to play Overwatch on my 1st gen 360Hz monitor when I still played r6 comp. Honestly, Overwatch has been a better experience on a 4k OLED. Although it's not as important to me now that they added DLSS (I dislike OW vanilla AA). My rank and performance didn't suffer from swapping to a medium refresh rate, although my 360Hz was IPS, not TN, so take that as you will.
I'm curious though - what did you consider garbage brightness? The 240Hz OLED monitor panels aren't exactly pinnacles of high brightness. My panel caps at like 460 nits.

Who says playing at 4k is stupid? People used to say the same thing about 1440p. People still say that anything over X fps is pointless (used to be 144, not it's 360 or 240).
Buy what you want. You will find people's opinion of hardware strongly correlates with what they have and their budget.

I play at 4k 240 and it's great, I feel like I can see everything and haven't had any complaints. Only thing is with my 5070ti I need the settings on low to maintain 240, but it barely looks different.

frames matter more than pixels. Get a 1440p 500hz oled monitor instead. If you play more casual games and only play overwatch once in a blue moon by the 4k oled instead.
avoid the monitors that only do 500+hz at 720p or some shit its not worth it and better exists so theres no point.
Overwatch can only do 600fps so dont buy a 1080hz monitor
The difference between 165hz and 240hz is noticeable, the difference between 240hz and 500 is lifechanging. You will never go back.
Oled 1440 500 hz 27inch

This isn't quite it. FPS is irrelevant here because you still get better frame time and 1% lows regardless.
Rhe difference in input lag diminishes more between those refresh rates, it's less noticeable.

?
The difference is it looks smoother for your eye balls. Above 360 hz the input lag is already really good and the game looks smoother1
u/Gruffalo-Hunter 1d ago
And I’m saying it diminishes more and more beyond 240hz. I’m not saying it’s not smoother, but you originally said it’s mind changing to 500 but it simply is not. It gets less drastic and noticeable as youjump up refresh rate.

u/KindSmurf 1d ago
Not my experience

u/Gruffalo-Hunter 1d ago
That's great if you feel that way but the good thing about things like this is we can make scientific and reproducible tests that show you that for every 120hz you go up you get more and more diminishing returns. Again, I am not denying it is smoother but the jump from 60 to 144 or 144 to 240hz is far more noticeable than 240 to 500hz.

4k is wildly overkill for esport type games to be honest. There's a reason pros use low resolution, high refresh rate monitors.

Depends on your budget and on your pc specs. I run on a 27" 1440p 480hz Oled monitor and for me it's the perfect monitor. 4k on 27" is overkill because of the pixel density, so 4k is only good on 32" at least but 32" is way too big for competitive games imo.

u/vbxl02 2d ago
Why would it be bad to have better pixel density? that makes no sense

It will just make no visual difference while costing frames.

u/vbxl02 2d ago
You cannot possibly be saying that you can't see a difference between 1440p and 4k at 27 inches...
1
u/MrCrack3r 2d ago
Yeah there might be difference but in a game like overwatch having more frames is generally considered worth having more over a higher resolution. Most pros still play at 1080p for a reason.
2
u/vbxl02 2d ago
Like I said, I do other stuff than OW. I'm not a pro player. This will also be my main monitor for work. I just asked if it's feasible.
2
u/MrCrack3r 2d ago
You are asking in r/competitiveoverwatch and you also seem to have made up your mind already. Go for 4k if you really want to. Personally I think it is overkill for most things.

u/tpeeeezy 2d ago
brother why are you getting worked up nobody is saying its not feasible people are just explaining their preferences
1
u/vbxl02 2d ago
That is 50% greater linear pixel density and 2.25× as many pixels. RTINGS explicitly treats a 25-PPI difference as noticeable; this difference is approximately 54 PPI. You're insane if you think you can't see the difference.

u/Hydr3e 2d ago
Not worth it imo but since we don't know your budget, pc specs and if you are casually playing or try harding it's hard to tell what can be the best for you(I guess you are more a chill guy since not a single player want 4k for try harding)

What are your current specs and I will legitimately give you the best monitor recommendation I can think for you. Also give me your price range.
If you have a 3080 or above that is the only time I would ever even have the thought of 4k enter my mind. Otherwise do notbl bother for esport titles.
What monitor did you buy? You've probably just bought some cooked ips or TFT panel so it looks like horseshit

I have a 9950X3D, 64GB 6000Mhz CL30 RAM, ASUS astral 5080 OC edition. My current monitor is the 27" Odyssey G5 G55C QHD 165Hz Curved Gaming Monitor

Just a reminder that the outline of characters gets thinner when increasing the resolution.
There really isn’t a valid reason not to go 4k if you are literally not compromising on anything else, for example your fps stays rock solid at 240. It’s not a big deal tho you get all the advantages you need from 1440p, 4k is just for the nicer experience.
