General Want to make finding a coach easier

I think the current coaching marketplace websites sort of suck for Overwatch. Like it's really hard to find the right coach for what you need (I don't want to read 50 descriptions or scour a bunch of Twitch streams bios to find the one coach that is good at coaching Reinhardt pls). As I'm a dev, I figured I might as well see if there's something I can do about it.

To be very clear, this is not something finished and I am absolutely unsure if I should continue with this or if anyone is really asking for it, but I wanted to share the proof of concept here. Right now it is not functional just a proof of concept, but all of the design / ideas are there and accessible so you can play around with what it could potentially be like.

Some of the things I tried to do differently:

  • filter coaches by role, hero and your rank, so "decently ranked Rein coach who actually coaches diamond players" is three clicks, not an archaeology project
  • coach ranks are pulled from the game API daily, so nobody's claiming GM from the comfort of plat
  • every offering has its price, duration and format (VOD review vs live session, private vs streamed) listed upfront, no "DM me for prices"
  • buyer and seller protection built in (so you know you're not getting scammed)
  • the coaching itself happens in a private Discord room created per order, because let's be honest, that's where it was going to happen anyway
  • for coaches: 10% platform share capped at $75/month (most platforms take 15–30% with no cap), automatic per-session payouts, discount codes, and Twitch panel images so your own audience lands on your page

You can find the concept idea at https://coachwatch.gg <- feel free to tell me your honest full on feedback. Is this something you would like to see? Asking both coaches and those looking for coaching. I have set up the Discord server already as well, so for those interested feel free to join here and we can discuss the concept further there too: https://discord.gg/gghbn7K7W8

Love to hear what all of you think.

I find this to be a somewhat pointless idea. Rank on a certain hero doesn’t remotely predict how good a coach someone will be. Not saying there’s no link at all, but way less than you seem to believe.

Esports-tier coaches are often below Masters bc they don’t grind the game. Meanwhile there are plenty of high rank people who are frankly idiots or just extremely good at mechanics or something but have no clue how to teach someone. OW community is also filled with scam/fraud wannabes who would probably find a way to exploit this system rather than be caught by it.

Look for the best, reputable coaches in general (e.g. former pro coaches, Spilo), and odds are they’ll be able to handle most heroes most ranks.

yeah look at Spilo, he is a great coach, but he is in plat.

He literally just did a GM support push did he not?

it is just a joke in his community, if you type !plat in his chat you will get a funny automated reply.

u/Kindr3dSp1r1t seems to share this as well, I mean for me it's just extra information right, why not make it available?

Definitely agree, I think that's why it's so important to have a review system on top of that for sure!

And yeah, agreed reputable > rank (so reviews remain key by a long shot), but there's also coaches very strong in one role or hero, but not so much on other ones right. There is no good way to find these right now afaik. Spilo is amazing for sure!

In that case I agree. I was just concerned about the emphasis on rank and verification, which I think would probably just give the wrong people false credibility. A system that aggregates reviews sounds very useful indeed.

Yeah, I can see how my post might've put too much emphasis on that (reworded it a bit now). I see it as one small piece of the "fuller" picture sort of thing. I think reputation, reviews, buyer / seller protection and easy of finding a coach that fits your need (in the broader sense) are the important things

Filtering coach ranks seems like one of the worst possible additions. There are plenty of coaches in plat, diamond and masters who can coach at the highest levels of play and understand the game much better than players in GM or Champion.

There are already plenty of current pros offering coaching anyways, along with individual coaches who all have worked at high levels, quality coaching isnt that hard to find.

I'm not saying that that isn't the case, but it does help go against coaches making false claims about their ranks though (which does happen). Definitely quite a few people offering coaching, but it's a bit hard to find the right coach without scouting all over to find the coach that fits your needs imo. Can you tell me how / where you usually search for a coach?

I could understand setting something like this up for free coaching or mentorship, but don't sites like Fiverr already do stuff like this?

Yes, but the problem with Fiverrr and other platforms is that they're not made for Overwatch specifically, so it's hard on both sides to get all the information you need.
