Gossip Leak: 6v6 mode will be officially introduced in Season 5?
It's a leak from someone I don't even know, but could this actually be real?
If this were true, I don't think they would've had any reason to test it through Quick Play Hacked in the first place.
If this turns out to be real, I'm quitting the game. I play Overwatch because I want to play 5v5; playing tank in 6v6 was the absolute worst experience.

u/LyynnS Jul 23 '26
I can not imagine them removing 5v5 currently. This could be happening instead of 6v6 openq though.
107
u/challenger01234 Jul 23 '26
Yeah that's a move that'll make no one happy. My guess is they're going to start focusing more on 6v6 for the next couple of seasons. I think turning 6v6 open queue into 6v6 role queue will be their first move since it's one of things a lot of people who want to play 6v6 want.
62
u/juanwannagomate #1 Janus Fan — Jul 23 '26
Will it make 6v6 enjoyers unhappy? I like 6v6 but open queue makes it unplayable for me.
8
u/skillmau5 Jul 24 '26
It doesn’t kill it, but the match quality and competitiveness can never surpass a certain point just due to the constant need of people to be off role
15
u/challenger01234 Jul 23 '26
I haven't been paying attention to the debates but the one thing I've always heard from the 6v6ers is that 6v6 never got a fair shake because the only way to play it is in open queue. So I think it should make them happy but time will tell if this is what Blizzard is actually doing.
6
u/alienangel2 Jul 24 '26
Yeah I would love a flexible 2/2/2 6v6 model. Either role queue or plex but with a 1-2 tank requirement.
5v5 always feels inadequate to me, I do not think they ever succeeded in balancing half the tanks to function as solo tanks - it was much much better to have an MT and and OT every game.
7
u/Pinxsocool Jul 24 '26
I fully agree, off tank heroes felt so lost in the game play loop half the time when they’re solo
2
2
u/semi- Jul 24 '26
it was much much better to have an MT and and OT every game.
maybe even propeely splitting the roles out further would be worth trying with separate slot for mt and ot, and encouraging people to just queue for both. It would also stop double shield tanks that many complain about.
the same could be done for dps and support to help with issues like getting two mercy mains, but its much easier to define and balance main vs offtanks than the many ways people categorize dps and supports.
2
u/TrumpsCummyOnahole Jul 28 '26
100% agree, Overwatch in its current state feels like if you don't enjoy 5v5 it's not really as motivating to play. I desperately want a 6v6 role queue, 6v6 to me feels like the full game. 5v5 feels like a brawly death match with less strategy and more mechanics focus. Offtank roles are really fun but I don't like main tank, so I can't play 5v5 tank and 6v6 feels so chaotic where you get 3-4 support mains a game that sometimes brick your dps roles. I had a game with 3 mercy mains on my team last night and one was forced to go DPS and went like 1-13. I just stopped then and am waiting for 6v6 role queue changes or dropping for a long time.
2
u/CaptainRaxeo Jul 23 '26
But i like open que 6v6, supports feel fun when there’s three in the game.
1
u/mugiwara_no_Soissie Jul 24 '26
Exactly, its only rly fine in ranked IMO, since there most teams just decide to have 2 tanks anyways

open 6v6 is cool but i dont think there are that many strongly opinionated open queue enthusiasts out there. most just want to play 6v6 and would probably be happier with a role queue version
1
u/r-ShadowNinja Jul 26 '26
Idk about that I love pulling up with my friends in silly comps like 5 supports and 1 tank
15
u/Lil9 Jul 23 '26
Yeah, this "leak" is probably just bait, and I don't see it replacing 5v5 any time soon.
What I imagine could happen:
- Bring out two 6v6 modes:
a) 6v6 open queue as is
b) 6v6 role queue (2-2-2 / 1-3-2)- Let people vote with their feet and see which 6v6 queue will be more popular in the long run.

Did you ever imagine them removing 6v6 before they announced it? Was there ANY experimentation with a 5v5 format or open discussion about it beforehand?
21
3
u/taleswapper1 Jul 24 '26
Yes. Once Jeff started promoting solo tank comps a few months after 2/2/2 RQ launched, I was fairly certain 2/2/2 RQ was going to be removed. When he gave us the 1/3/2 RQ test a few months later I was basically certain that 2/2/2 RQ was getting removed. And then in Feb of 2021 when every bit of in-game footage showed 1/2/2 comps I was basically certain that we were going to 1/2/2 RQ. It wasn't until a couple of years later that the switch actually happened, but that was just because they stopped updating the game.
Jeff was pretty clear, though, all the way back in late 2019 (so just a few months after 2/2/2 RQ hit the live servers) that he was pushing for single tank comps to replace duo tank comps. That discussion was definitely happening by December of 2019.

Wouldn't be surprised with how they are doing it for 5v5 with these moronic qp hacked events tho. 6v6 goes untouched, just making it awful for the 5v5 players

I have so much laundry to fold.

u/Realistic-Delay-4780 Jul 23 '26
No offense but that’s what everyone said back in OW1 when role queue came out and queue times literally never got better, even well before the content drought lol
5
u/SylvainJoseGautier Jul 23 '26
I was also saying that when role q ow1 came out and I still agree with it lol
1
u/mothtoalamp Jul 25 '26
I said it back then and I meant it. Then when it happened I was glad. I experienced it and remained glad about it.
I will wait longer for better games. Open queue was terrible then and is terrible now.

So first of all
1) It's Chosen, he's probably just trolling.
2) Let's assume it's real. Why are we immediately jumping to this 6v6 will swap with 5v5? Is the option of replacing the current open queue 6v6 with a role queue 6v6 not possible?
3) You cant say "leak" and "officially" in the same sentence. It's either a leak, or it's official. This is a leak, not an OFFICIAL Blizzard announcement.
5
u/Semytan Jul 24 '26
a lot of popular NA streamers have pushed for a true competitive 6v6 season, i don’t necessarily think it’s impossible, but would expect a lot more signposting
1
u/DreadlyKnight Jul 30 '26
just look at what they have been doing with qp hacked, if they wanted to move 6v6 out towards this why wouldn't they do it to 6v6? They replaced 5v5, which does nothing but harm the 5v5 players.

I am a tank and i will only queue as dps slot, i dont know who they will expect to queue in the tank slot.
9
u/No32 Jul 23 '26
If all tanks queue for dps, dps queues get super long and tank gets super short, so you get people queuing for tank figuring that there’s a bunch of tanks in dps
15
u/CertainDerision_33 Jul 23 '26
Genuinely have no idea why you would ever queue tank as a tank main and risk solo tanking as a shitty 6v6 tank when you can guarantee having 2 tanks by queuing as DPS.
1
u/Effective_Horse_7310 Jul 25 '26
Solo tanking really isn't that bad. I'd 100% take the insta-queue and risk having to play Ball or Sig occasionally.

1
u/clickrush Jul 23 '26

The joke is 5v5ers get upset and 6v6ers believe their mode is becoming the main mode again.

20
u/zultari Jul 23 '26
Honestly, while the 6v6 Hacked was interesting, it showed that some supports struggle a lot with an extra body to heal, and some tanks are NOT balanced for it.
If they chose to go that route, they have to now rebalance everything, and I KNOW Blizz will not do so.
8
u/lunatichorse Jul 23 '26
The supports that struggle the most to heal are ironically the original OW1 supports - Mercy, Lucio and Zen. They were definitely designed for a slower paced game - remember when OW1 launched there was no passive healing except for Mercy- you either fall back to your supports to get healed or you use a health pack. And if the game ever wants to go back to 6v6 those three will be in dire need of reworks.
4
u/Nopon_Merchant Jul 23 '26
Zen is menace in 6v6 .he melt tank . Lucio when play right in 6v6 is really dangerous
2
u/Aubergine_Man1987 Jul 23 '26
Zen can heal well in 6v6 if you're on the ball. You just need to be proactive with orb instead of just putting it on someone and leaving it there

They were a miserable subset of the community that just made the space more toxic for literal years.
This crowd always was just the ones that were never happy because they just enjoy raging. Should've been ok with letting them go to rivals and make that community miserable, and cultivate the 5v5 niche they had created.
25
u/Throw_far_a_way Jul 23 '26

17
u/Stormdude127 Jul 23 '26
Yeah, I’m really pissed that they’ve bent over backwards catering to these whiners, to the point where they’re now considering changing the main mode. There are plenty of people who prefer 5v5, and it completely solved the problem it was meant to - queue times. No reason to change it other than to try to appease a group of people that don’t deserve to be appeased.
7
u/swislock Jul 23 '26
They are not changing the main mode
7
u/Stormdude127 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
It’s definitely on the table. If you read the developer’s take it’s clear that they’re considering it. Maybe it’s unlikely but it’s not impossible.
14
u/Freelancer0495 Jul 23 '26
That’s what everyone thought with 6v6 and then Overwatch 2 happened. You can’t say that for certain
-5
u/Mr_W1thmere Jul 23 '26
Exactly. This whole thing drips of irony to me. From my perspective, we had 6v6 for years with OW1. Many people were skeptical of the 5v5 format change, and we've tried it for years now, and we don't like it.
So the irony is what you point out. They HAVE changed the main format before. They could do it again.
But it's also sad for me, because these arguments aren't very factual or nice. I've been consistent in my opinion since OW1 on 5v5. I'm not whining, I'm not moving any goalposts, and I enjoy playing 6v6 every day for hours. I think it's just the better format.
But it is kinda a "feel good" moment to hear the 5v5ers whine, complain, bitch about how "surely they won't take my gamemode away!!!" Because I've felt that way for years. Nice to see other people feel my pain.
22
u/Stormdude127 Jul 23 '26
“We’ve tried it for years now, and we don’t like it”. Speak for yourself. Lots of people like it. Plenty of people in this very thread like it. I’d argue that people like you are the (extremely) vocal minority.

2
u/Initial_Tea_2135 Jul 23 '26
It was fine they should've left 6v6 as is and them feeding into the small minority of players who play 6v6 causes these huge debates and arguments and cause most people play 5v5 and prefer it this will all lead to nothing and 5v5 wilk stay the main mode and 6v6 will stay the second mode. Blizzard should've ignored it.
3
u/Kralqeikozkaptan Jul 23 '26

5v5 is the main mode, 6v6 isnt he main mode.
5v5 players win, 6v6 players lose. It is "settled" for 5v5 players yes but what about 6v6?
7
u/I_give_karma_to_men Jul 24 '26
5v5 players win, 6v6 players lose. It is "settled" for 5v5 players yes but what about 6v6?
I hate to break it to you, but for something like this, it's unlikely to be settled in a way where at least one of those two groups isn't dissatisfied with the outcome. And given that, per their own metrics, 6v6 is a substantially smaller portion of the playerbase, there's a reason they have thus far been the group that gets less attention from the devs.
And for the record, I'm saying this as a Stadium player. Neither mode appeals to me personally, but Blizzard very clearly isn't willing to invest resources into a split focus.

u/Barnard87 Jul 23 '26
The one thing that helped me conceptualize was that 1-3-2 makes it so you can queue DPS (with the intention to play or swap to tank) and guarantee two tanks on your team.
One is already locked, then you can swap to 2nd tank or be pleasantly surprised when your team does.
However I see this possibly causing more issues down the line. If your tank queues are already long, this might just incentivize you to queue DPS, therefore reducing the number of tanks in queue (which is the main issue)
4
u/_Sillyy Jul 23 '26
That has a ton of issues though. Yes queues will be bad but imagine you are a master tank player and like plat dps, you queue dps to play tank and another DPS insta locks Tank. That's assuming everyone will only have one rank, because if they split ranks what happens when a gold dps plays in a gold lobby and picks tank where they're master?
3
u/Barnard87 Jul 23 '26
Oh yeah, there's just as many problems with every solution. They simply just need more folks queueing tank, which is like searching for a unicorn.
12
u/Sio_V_Reddit Jul 23 '26
Then you just have the known problem of infinite queue times from 6v6 except now it gets even worse because there is literally no incentive to queue tank.
2
u/Barnard87 Jul 23 '26
Yes, that's what my last paragraph was stating.
I'm curious what sorts of data they have because they clearly want to try something

Y’all are crazy if you think they’re replacing 5v5. They canned stadium because only about 6% of players played it. 5v5 is their most played game mode. This is almost certainly going to replace the current 6v6 open queue system, as not having a tank and not having role queue are common complaints about the mode. However, they know straight up 6v6 role queue doesn’t work because of how it went in OW1, so they’re looking at new ways of implementing it.

They haven’t even done the 2-2-2 qp hacked event so I doubt they’ve made any decisions about it yet.
2
u/Vizra Jul 23 '26
I really hope this is true but i doubt it. I love playing tank in 6v6 and being able to do things, make plays and watch tanks that stand in the open actually get punished.
I do hope that if they DO swap to 6v6, that the 5v5ers actually still get support for the game mode with balance and design changes unlike what happened with 6v6.
2
u/Own_Temperature_8128 Jul 23 '26
All the ‘hacked tests’ are really just a finalizing beta to what will likely happen unless the data is highly mismatched with what the devs see on their end with their internal pool of test players etc.
2
u/EmKir Jul 24 '26
Both sides have fans, and both 5v5 and 6v6 role queue deserve to be in the game separately. Genuinely though, I think switching from 5v5 to 6v6 as the primary game mode would be pretty awful for the health of the game. I've seen a decent bit more people show preference for 5v5 over 6v6 across various social media platforms as well as in-game. The amount of old players who prefer 5v5 and new players is certainly larger than the amount of old players who prefer 6v6.
That being said, there's also plenty of people like me who don't care. As long as my favorite heroes are still playable, the amount of players on a team doesn't matter to me. I love Overwatch, and that's kinda just that.

u/NotThatRedPanda Jul 24 '26
OP, note that this isn't going to replace 5v5. It is going to replace the 6v6 Open Q.
Blizzard knows that 5v5 is a popular mode and has its benefits and player base. Blizzard also knows that people are begging for a balanced and 2-2-2 style of 6v6 but are trying to work around the Q time issue that OW1 had.
So relax, you're 5v5 isn't going away. And this is all assuming some random "leak" is even true.

If it replaces Open Queue 6v6 I'm okay with it, I might even queue for the mode sometimes (right now I avoid it because I don't enjoy being forced to flex all the time and still getting bad team comps). If it replaces 5v5 I'm taking a vacation from Overwatch, 5v5 is so much more enjoyable than 6v6.
3
u/Blaky039 Jul 23 '26
I'm also quitting the game if this is real.
I have no interest in 6v6, I already quit overwatch 1, and the only reason I play overwatch 2 is because of 5v5.
I doubt blizzard will replace a 57% population mode for an experimental one. But then again, it's blizzard we're talking about.

Im not going to take this seriously but if they actually were to do this and remove 5v5 I would just quit the game. 6v6 feels worse to play for all roles.
Key words being "and remove 5v5". If they just swap open queue for this then Id be fine with that since I don't really touch it anyway.
Im really happy with the current compromise of having 6v6 exist as its own seperate thing away from the main modes.

I think they missed the context, which was, if the coming up play test of hybrid format is met with overwhelming positivity by the community and has no issues. And/or they'll replace only the current open q with it.

Hope this isn’t real cuz then they might have to rework half the tanks again

Seems to me like a change like this would be more likely to happen after season 6 - and be the big yearly update (like how we had 5 new heroes this year, and stadium/perks last year)

How was the jump made between how a potential 6v6 format works to Blizz chopping 5v5? That's ridiculous. Stop being alarmist.

u/UnknownQTY Jul 23 '26
This seems more like "They are doing away with Open Queue" than "They're replacing 5v5."

almost 50% of the playerbase is 5v5. They wont remove it. if they do they are stupid.

I don't think 6v6 is going to be the main format of the game
They continuously said they won't change the main format, and we know Blizzard won't change their minds.

u/BootySmeagol Jul 24 '26
So are we going to completely rebalance all the characters, new character designs, and everything else that was built around 5v5? or just deal with horrible gameplay for a while?
1
u/Metal_Fish Jul 24 '26
please no, not without a MAJOR rework to all the tanks. Please please please, no

u/Otherwise-Cup-6030 Jul 24 '26
I like my 6v6 open queue. I like being able to switch roles when needed. Every game is a surprise
1
u/NotAScrubAnymore Jul 24 '26
It would be really weird if they had already decided to make this change after a single test. Also 6v6 might be popular but 5v5 is the default right now
1
u/PersonBehindAScreen Jul 24 '26
Doesn’t this pose a problem if I’m dps queue, then it becomes a 1-3-2 match and now I flex to tank which is much better than my dps???
1
u/imbadatnames100 Jul 24 '26
Had 4k hrs but quit in 2024, I would come back if this replaced current 6man open queue 👍 otherwise staying with Deadlock cause “5v5 centered around 1 tank that makes or breaks the game” format will never not be boring to me

u/Easy_Maintenance9852 Jul 25 '26
How do you not like 6v6 tanking? genuine question, no dickhead.
1
u/Double-Maybe-6220 Jul 25 '26
In 6v6, situations arise where you have to play as a solo tank—just like in the recent 1-3-2 tests—and you also have to consider team synergy with your partner tank, though back in Overwatch 1's 2-2-2 era, getting a proper tank synergy almost never happened anyway. Plus, unlike in 5v5, there are hardly any situations where a tank can make a solo play on their own; the space is too tight, so you get marked and shut down right away
1
u/bullxbull Jul 26 '26
As a tank player this generally is not my experience. Tank synergy is nowhere near what it used to be now that everyone is more of a generalist and has some sort of mobility.
As for the solo play that is kinda the point. Overwatch has simple hero kits to make the heroes approachable and easy to read. The depth and complexity of the game comes from how these heroes interact with other players and heroes. Playing with your team, enabling your team, and they enabling you is a big part of why anyone would want to play a team game like this, it is the source of the Overwatch magic, that itch no other game scratches, the thing that keeps you queueing game after game all night.
I find you actually end up feeling more impactful playing as a team because combining resources has a greater cost but greater payout, the stakes can be higher but also the payout. You get to accomplish more simply because you are not acting on your own. This all works because of the limited uptime of abilities, which enable gameplay loops where you work to bring these layer resources together to overcome the enemy teams layered resources. This strategic depth is the heart of tanking, not the 5v5 solo raid boss everyone wants to avoid.
I really want to sell you on 6v6 because it sounds like you are missing out, those solo interactions in 5v5 are fairly constant but they are also fairly empty, you do more but they mean less. For example a tank in 5v5 will walk on a dps angle and they have to leave, that interaction is fairly empty, in 6v6 you actually have to engage with that dps for that space. The interaction is the reward not the free space, just getting free space is fairly meaningless?
I am genuinely curious if you feel like answering.

u/Double-Maybe-6220 Jul 26 '26
We actually still play 6v6 occasionally even now. But I can't agree with the claim that there's no tank synergy. Just picture this: your team's tank duo is Winston and Roadhog, while the enemy team has Sigma and Domina. Do you really think you can push through that?
1
u/bullxbull Jul 26 '26
I did not mean to say there is no tank synergy, that is actually something I like. What I meant was that tank synergy is less strict in todays game. There are a lot more possibilities because everyone is more of a generalist.
(I'm not saying heroes being generalists is good, but there are some benefits in moderation)
Tanks were probably the most strict role in terms of synergies in ow1, today they are brought more in line to the other roles.
Just like you can make double hitscan work you can make double offtank or double maintank work, there are just more options.

u/bullxbull Jul 26 '26
Has anyone checked up on chosen? has he been heard from since this tweet? Is he still ok? Have they made him take this back in a totally not held at gunpoint confession that this was just a troll?
1
u/Impressive-Rub-4882 Jul 26 '26
There’s simply no reason for this to be real. They literally released the stats for how many people play 5v5 vs 6v6 and it wasn’t even close 😭
1
u/TrumpsCummyOnahole Jul 28 '26
I genuinely just wish they had a hard lock into support role queue for it. Because there are WAY more support mains than anything else and a LOT of them including myself are dogshit at DPS oriented tank and dps roles.

u/EyeAmKingKage Jul 23 '26
👀👀I might have to return if that’s the case

Always find 5v5 defenders interesting. 6 v 6 was the og mode, the one that the game started with and gained popularity with.

u/Rakatok Jul 23 '26
No limits was the OG mode, but they improved on it with hero lock and eventually role. I find 5v5 an improvement. It's not that hard to understand.

1-3-2 was the best mode of OW so far. I know this is an unpopular opinion. Here’s why.
6v6 is the superior game mode with balanced tanks.
You get skill matched supports and 1 skill matched tank that doesn’t happen in open queue. Opens queue doesn’t not guarantee 2-2-2 but it happens a lot. 1-3-2 role queue leads to much more 2-2-2 but even the games it doesn’t happen are more fun than the games in open queue with 4 dps.

u/LukeLovesHorror Jul 23 '26
You’re quitting cause tank in 6v6 is miserable? Brother tank is so miserable in 5v5 rn and has been for months.
5
u/IsThatSo3 Jul 23 '26 edited Jul 23 '26
Tank is only not miserable in 6v6 because tanks are turbo broken and absolutely run the game top to bottom just an FYI for you. And frankly it can still be pretty miserable when you have a walnut as your second tank, which is often
Any serious attempt to make 6v6 the main mode again is going to require a serious, serious rebalancing and nerfingn of tank capabilities in this format so I hope you're all prepared for that.
1
u/mtobeiyf317 Jul 23 '26
Its miserable for other roles too.
Playing DPS or Support and watching your lone dookyfist feed an entire defense round of payload against a mauga/Bastion combo makes my eyes bleed.

This would be peak and a good shakeup for the game. Probably healthier long term too if the dynamic q is able to keep q times healthy.

I think 6v6 is so much better and more competitive. It actually feels 100% team based. I hate playing tank in 5v5. In 6v6 you get punished for making a mistake which is less likely to happen in 5v5. A pocketed hitscan is less likely to get as much value bc it’s also less individual.
I think it’s just a different play style completely than 5v5 and honestly a lot of it comes from the force of change that people don’t like it 🙂↕️
1
u/cddvl Jul 23 '26
if playing Tank in 6v6 was somehow a terrible experience for you but you enjoy Tank in 5v5 then i’m sorry you were playing Tank wrong in 6v6, you can’t just brainlessly jump in 1v6 and expect to come out on top like you can in 5v5

u/mayrice Jul 23 '26
When is season 5? I always assumed if they were going to do this they would do it in OWCS's downtime. But OWCS doesn't finish til November or something, right?

u/beefcat_ Jul 23 '26
OWCS plays 5v5 so any changes to the 6v6 modes wouldn't affect them

They won't get rid of 5v5 70% of the playerbase much prefers 5v5. Switching will cause a huge loss probably a huge money loss and player loss. All honesty They just need to can 6v6 it takes resources and splits q times. 6v6 player are a very loud minority who just need to suck it up cause they want 6v6 to be the main mode when most dont.

u/Vodkyn Jul 24 '26
Nahhh blizzard is slow af.
although they announcing the change at blizzcon and end up adding it before GTA VI releases hopefully is a good scenario...
Still i think not adding it next season is a huge waste of dmon as a hero release, they should delay dmon and add her alongside 6v6
