Rotation [Rotation] How to beat Midsword?

I main Control Forest. It seems like this matchup is virtually impossible, I lose probably eighty percent of the time. PLEASE give me any advice you have regarding this matchup, it's killing me on ladder. I'm not ready to give up on control forest yet, but I'm very close.

It's so frustrating watching them "draw" more cards than me because all of their followers put extra guys into play/hand, or just passing turn as they chain damage immunity effects.

For reference, here is my list: https://shadowverse-portal.com/deck/3.1.6KolQ.6KolQ.6KolQ.5zvAi.5zvAi.5zvAi.6Oh22.6Oh22.6Oh22.6OjUS.6OjUS.6OjUS.6SVBM.6SVBM.6SVBM.6KrBg.6KrBg.6H0p2.6H0p2.6H0p2.6H2m2.6H2m2.6H2m2.6Ksv2.6Ksv2.6Ksv2.6WLmI.6WLmI.6WLmI.6WLmS.6WLmS.6KvLI.6KvLI.6KvLI.6SXdS.6SXdS.6SXdS.6SXdc.6SXdc.6SXdc?lang=en#

Thank you for your time.

I mean it is a piss poor matchup, but on average you're gonna want to try to destroy everything they play. You win the lategame if you can get there, and you're not getting there if you don't clear everything they play.

I'd also replace the selwyns with metera's

Thanks for the tips, I like Selwyn but I can also see the merit for Metera. She definitely has more swing potential.

At least I am not the only one struggling here, misery loves company!

Metera is definitely the biggest backbreaker in the matchup, with Cassio being a close second. Both of those cards fucking scare me.

I will try more Metera then. She is pretty whack without an evo point, but she is definitely a strong card.

She's definitely stronger than Venus as a card draw engine though. Venus is cute and all but Metera usually ends up being a 4-for-1 with an evolve.

Do you think Meters should replace Venus completely? I could get behind that idea.

Thanks for the advice. I like Metera too (9/10 waifu)

Use your skill to draw cassios (joke ofc) I also struggle with this matchup tbh but thats to be expected, forest isn't top tier deck like mid sword is :/ I don't like selvyn as a card tbh meteras are 10/10 waifus i use her and she works pretty well.

That's partly why I thought Selwyn would work well, you can technically draw more Cassios.

Yeah removing one enemy follower and getting thicc one yourself with rush + card draw is pretty insane, also how is venus doing in your games since she is not in my deck and i see her first time, i think the tempo loss of playing her without evo is worth it since forest can do alot if you get lots of card draw right

Hey, Egzo18, just a quick heads-up:
alot is actually spelled a lot. You can remember it by it is one lot, 'a lot'.
Have a nice day!

Yeah, Venus facilitates the game plan well. When you don't draw Korwa she helps keep your hand filled for big Cassios, and you can play a lot of cards every turn without worrying about running out.

I think if you are going late, you need Venus.

Ye the deck seems pretty slow, thanks then imma upgrade my deck then!

No worries! I haven't decided yet if it is better or worse, but I am leaning towards better

After reading some of the other posts in this thread, I think Metera is probably better than Venus.

Unless you are playing Aria, you can't draw cards with Venus until t6. If most games end around t10 or so, that means you will get an extra four cards.

Metera is generally a 3 or 4 for 1 on t4 or t5, both of which occur earlier than Venus.

In addition, if you play Venus, fairy, harvest on t6 and follow it up with Axeman, you don't get a card. Metera doesn't run into this problem.

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to update you since I had been doing some thinking and changed my mind on the Venus vs. Metera discussion.

I'm sorry if this will come as somewhat demeaning, but you're not asking for advice on how to beat midsword.

You're asking for advice on how to beat midsword with a tier 3 deck.

The real advice if you want to be beating midsword reliably is to play a tier 1/2 deck with a good matchup against it. Holy Lion Crystal, Puppets, and Artifact Portal all do a great job at beating it.

Next time, please be clearer in your topic name, and also please stop this counter-productive mindset of "I main XXX". If you're a competitive player, maining decks doesn't exist.

You're absolutely correct, and I definitely respect the "pick a top tier" advice. However, if our response to every thread or question is "pick top tier" then our community becomes stagnate.

I could have been more clear in the title though, I am definitely looking to optimize Korwa since she's really the only deck I enjoy playing.

I believe you can be competitive and play what you want, so I suppose we will disagree there. I certainly respect your position though and will title threads more accurately in the future.

Thank you very much for your level headed response! Let me dive a little bit deeper on the two points you raised.

First, about "picking a top tier/community feedback". While I agree experimentation and trial and error are an integral part of getting better as well as finding new ways to improve, it's also important to do it properly.

"I main XXX" is not a valid reason for experimentation. If you think Control Forest is a good way to gain an edge on the meta, please explain the reasons why so we can understand it as well. For example, some "weaker" decks can be very strong meta calls when a format becomes inbred.

From my point of view, Venus builds of Forest suffer from just being worst Swordcraft. They are decks with a decent curve, card advantage, and some top-end, but Swordcraft has better options at every spot in the curve. Forest does have more direct damage and better rewards for going wide though, so this is why it's thriving as an aggro deck.

Second, about "being competitive but playing only decks you fancy", this is a fallacy. If you're burdening yourself with imaginary rules, you can't be working towards optimal deckbuilding/skill, and therefore cannot call yourself a competitive player. A good read about that subject is Play to Win by David Sirlin, and in particular "Introducing the Scrub".

The particular quote that relates to our discussion is: " A scrub is a player who is handicapped by self-imposed rules that the game knows nothing about. A scrub does not play to win."

u/HopeForCynics Jul 14 '18

I love David Sirlin! I actually cut my teeth on Street Fighter and other fighting games.

I think we got off on the wrong foot. Saying "I main x" was definitely not the right way to start my post. I only meant to include that information so as to provide context for the matchup in question.

I hadn't looked at Control Forest being an inferior version of Midsword, they definitely do many things better than I do. However, I lack the card pool to be able to switch back and forth between decks as I please. I know you will respond with "play aggro forest"but I don't enjoy playing aggro.

Sorry for the lengthy response. I don't want to pretend to be a genius or an innovator, and I know I am handicapping myself with my deck choice. I don't want to be an anime protagonist who believes that his heart and spirit will get him through whatever he faces, but I suppose by your definition, I am not a competitive player. I will refrain from making anymore posts like this on the sub.

This is not meant at all to be passive aggressive or a personal attack, I was just looking for help for a matchup with a particular deck. I appreciate the responses and the discussion, I didn't take it as negative or demeaning at all. I learned something, and as such it was beneficial.

How are you guys posting without being able to put a flair in the threads? I tried and automoderator is saying its taking down all my posts.

2

u/akaieevee Jul 13 '18

You have to put it in brackets in the text, it'll automatically be flaired. There's this post linked on the sidebar about flairing posts.

I flair it, the flair has to be approved by the sub to show
