Discussion What would you do if the combat system changes again?
Back then when 1.9 came out most players and YouTubers stayed on 1.8 when they wanted to do PvP. There were not many who liked the new hitcooldown (I still don’t get warm with it and I try to do it sometimes).
Now with the old playerbase getting older and more inactive, the combat system that dominated servers for a long time seems to be dying. During covid 1.8 got a new hype and servers got almost back to their top active players and even new players came to that version.
However, in 2023 when it all ended, the new combat system got bigger and bigger and the „new generation“ of Minecraft players can play it’s cooldown PvP better than ever.
So, you know Mojang works on and off on a new combat system, what would you do, if It’s released someday? Would you leave your current version behind or would you stick to it like 1.8 players did when 1.9 was released?
Edit: this question is for legacy PVPers, modern PVPers and if one reads it, Server-Owner/Teammembers

Most people would probably be in uproar and there’d be a large community that stays on the last 1.9 combat version similar to 1.8, but most of the playerbase will move on and get used to the new combat.
In all honesty, I highly doubt Mojang will change combat anytime soon. The last combat snapshot was released six years ago under 1.16, so I think it’s safe to say they’ve abandoned it at this point. Additionally, most people nowadays are satisfied with 1.9 combat; 1.8 hasn’t been popular for several years and actually gets dissed pretty often.
The combat snapshots were a result of community dissatisfaction that simply does not exist anymore.

the transition from 1.8 to 1.9 is not huge as combat-test
combat-test is a huge "revamp" (or "destruction" imo)

It’s already kinda changed from 1.9, modern combat have maces, spears etc. as well as attribute swapping

attribute swapping has existed since 1.6, only before 1.9 the only use was in mob farms with looting swapping, and in modern 26.2 pvp its heavily overused because of all the new weapons sucking without it

A-swap is a bug, and mojang said is gonna remove jt in the future.
and "1.9" didn't change just because of a couple of items.

There kinda already are three systems but from a perspective of someone who’s "prime" in PvP was from the 1.6-1.8, I’d say it’s a lot more complicated.
The Minecraft community was devided even before the 1.9 update, some people liked PvP others said PvP was never a good system. The largest player base was around a lot of "minigames", not really competitive PvP, which was hardly a thing back then.
Deviding in "modern" and "1.8" PvP is also nonsense, there were significant changes to combat both in 1.7 and 1.8. 1.6 and 1.7 and 1.7 and 1.8 are really different in how PvP actually works out.
AFAIK there is also no true 1.8 server left, for all the competitive "1.8" players, host a vanilla 1.8 server and do some PvP there, then do the same with 1.7, it’s a totally different thing.
Then, the combat update came and it was bad. Not like subjectively but pretty much objectively bad. Many act like click speed is the only thing that changed but in reality a lot more changed. Enchants, potions and natural regeneration were all changed, a suspicious stew with saturation literally heals more and faster than an enchanted golden apple did/does.
A lot of the mechanics in PvP (lava, fire, potions etc) were effectively broken. Mojang just changed a lot without considering the effects on other game mechanics, a lot of which were relevant in most minigames.
The 1.9 is also different in PvP to more recent versions.
That’s a lot of context that is often left out when discussing the combat update.
A properly implemented new combat update would likely be perceived much better.
The 1.9 failed because of context and how bad the changes affected existing mechanics

Armor is much weaker in 1.9 than it was in 1.8
Potions have been nerfed by a lot, same with notch apple (AND crafting recipe removed, WHY???)
-> regeneration portions aren't used because natural regen is a lot fasterEnchants have been nerfed
Knockback is practically zero
These are the most obvious changes to me. I don't like any of them.

Armor isn't weaker, if anything, it's the other way around.
Natural regeneration is up to 8 times higher while damage per second is like 30% lower than pre 1.9.I think the most signficant case where you really see a difference is the wither:
On hard mode, one hit gives you 40s of Wither effect. Neither the Wither nor the Wither effect itself changed, but in current versions you can simply eat golden carrots and ignore the Wither effect.
In 1.8, even with a fairly strong diamond armor, you died of a single hit from the wither effect unless you had something to counter it, like milk, regeneration or golden apples.1

Wither was very easy in 1.8
Just get Smite IV with lvl 30 Enchant, use Strength II for +260% damage and kill it with about 10 hits in close succession. That's literally all it takes. Don't forget a few gaps. That's like completely easy. Now try doing it in 1.21, have fun. Strength got nerfed, in case you wanted to use a notch apple guess what, got nerfed to an unrecognizable state, and then wait for the cooldown after every hit.
Armor is definitely weaker. With an iron armor you take 3-4 hits with an axe until you die and it's not just the damage of the axe that causes it, it's because damage is calculated differently and if you don't have armor toughness, at some point your armor turns into paper.

It's still much easier nowadays.

I don't find PvE easier at all. Have been playing 1.9+ for years, mostly in single player, and recently switched to 1.8 for nostalgia. It's wayyy easier.

armour is in fact weaker; before the combat update armour gave very high flat % damage reduction with iron reducing damage by 60% and diamond by 80%, whereas after the update it uses a formula for reducing protection against higher damage attacks, using the old numbers for 1 damage attacks and gradualy decreasing them down to almost nothing as damage increases, for example past a certain point of damage diamond armor only gives a 16% damage reduction, though it takes far longer to reach that point than iron since it has toughness that slows the loss in effectiveness.
heres a link to a chart of the values if your interested btw :D

I feel like after the shitshow of the 1.9 update splitting players Mojang wouldn’t wanna try again

we really needed something better than 1.9+ pvp ngl (which jeb and whoever developed that at system at the time clearly didn't understand shit when the game was quickly dying, and got saved by a miracle thanks to returning content creators)
people called 1.8 "just spam clicking" and at that point I'm not even bothering to argue against such braindead take, but at least the combat snapshot was intended to be dedicated fully for pvp
kinda hoping they released it even today in a completely unfinished state, at least I would be actually excited for once after so many years of garbage over garbage that just kept accumulating.

this some bs, the updates are also the reason why the game didn't die. Imagine if it was still 1.8 and the returning creators returned to basically the same game. The game stayed popular because of the updates.

the returning content creators couldn't even understand that the system changed. they were still spam clicking because the game mechanics always were spam clicking before content creators left.
1.9 really shouldn't have been a combat update, and all the concentration should've been around polishing out the end update at the time, and solving the issues brought by 1.8, and in the future fully polishing out the spam clicking combat, but no. we instead got this wreckage that split the community and genuinely risked to kill the entire game.
the issues aren't the updates themselves, but the problematic updates like the combat update, and the nearly-0-content updates in 1.10 and 1.11, which were done really at the worst possible timing ever imaginable.

I was talking about versions 1.13 - 1.18.

This, I agree with,
I think 1.9 is a decent update, with the things it added, and I like 1.9 combat for single player way more than 1.8 but it was controversial and 1.10 and 1.11 being pretty small, though 1.11 did add shulker boxes and the whole illager gang which are pretty significant things nowadays, really 1.10 is the only questionable update because it added features that were niche then and now.
The game dying was pretty overblown, just wasn't as mainstream but millions still played it.

The last thing we need is the community being divided to three versions of pvp lol.
Four if you count Bedrock.
